Hey, Frozen! I'm a few weeks behind, but on Episode 33 you asked whether we wanted town videos. I vote YES, here's why: I'm watching for the whole thru-hike experience and town days are part of that AND I think for your own sake (and maybe even your family & kids) you'll appreciate having those videos to help you remember & tell the complete story. I also enjoy & think you'll be glad to look back on videos of people you meet or even just come across or pass along the way. It gives a better idea of what hiking the trail is like (ie are there many people out on trail or are you and Bigfoot the only ones out there some days?) I'm enjoying your content & apologize for the lengthy comment! Hike on!!! You've got this!!
I am so impressed! On the AT, you began the trail expecting to do it alone, but finally embraced a tramily who became lifelong friends. This year, you began the PCT with the expectations similar to the AT, connecting every footstep and staying on trail the whole way, and now you are embracing the unique circumstances of the PCT and embracing the improvisation necessary to navigate the trail safely. You seem so much more relaxed and enjoying your journey, obstacles and all. The trails change people in so many different ways. Finish strong Frozen!
You guys are making good decisions. Skipping the closures allows you to press on to the northern terminus safely. BTW, have some bagel with that nutella 😆 Stay safe 🐻🌲
I think the sound is the real Big Foot!! That is a crazy amount of snow on July 17 in Oregon!! Scary to be so close to a fire and watch it grow!!!! I'm a Cali resident and ask the same question, why didn't they bring in a helicopter with a water bucket when it was really small??? Never have gotten a satisfactory answer, budget.... So eerie how the sun colors are affected by the fire!! It's a long day, better safe than sorry! Glad your wife was able to update you!! It's fine to miss some miles, it keeps you safe!!! Hats off to all of you, stay safe!!! It would be awful to be stuck in a fire, and take resources away from firefighting. Hitch in a boat 😆
You definitely made the right decision! The fires in the West are brutal and unpredictable. There is so much tinder that dried out during the droughts they've had for years. I was on a backpacking trip in the RMNP in 2018, a year and a half after our trip, The East Troublesome fire jumped over the mountain we were camped at the base of from Grand Lake into Estes Co. It completely annihilated every step we had taken on that trip. Bigfoot and you are right in thinking it doesn't have to be a continuous footpath to be a thru hike. That's what adventure is all about, you need the mindset that things might not go as planned, adjust and make the best of it. What an adventure it has been! Just stay safe!
Hey Frozen, it was nice to meet you and Bigfoot at Crater Lake! We were wondering if/when you might encounter the fire near Diamond Lake fire. We saw the lightning the night before and saw a little smoke while driving to Carter Lake the next day. On our way back to diamond lake, they were doing air drops and we actually had to evacuate that evening. Crazy stuff for an east coasterner….so glad you guys made it around the fire. We were thinking of you!!
I’m from the Sierra and have fond memories of Shelter Cove/Odell Lake. Driving up and Jumping off from there to hike portions of the PCT going north and then bringing friends later to do the same. Every year since I can’t believe what is/has burned. Stay safe.
Your hitch in the boat was hilarious. You looked like an old movie scene where you were sitting in front of moving scenery. Love it. Glad you're all staying as safe as you can
Nothing but pride, that's how you should Feel watched your entire AT Hike and am looking forward to seeing you finish the PCT Thanks for all the work involved to put these videos out for us to watch.
In 2018 I had smoke from around Etna all the way through Oregon. I didn't have to skip any trail though. I camped in the same area you did after Crater Lake and had a cold night too. I'm glad you were able to make it past the fires safely. Hopefully that continues. Thanks for sharing your hike.
Have had the same issue with multiple zippers over the years. The fix has been to gently squeeze on both sides of the zipper with pliers to close the gap a little.
Maybe a successful completion of the PCT should be considered total miles hiked based on official fire closures that particular year, not just a line on a map and consecutive footsteps.
As of today, there's 97 fires burning in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. Here near my home town, we have the Rimrock Retreat and Black Canyon fires burning here in Washington. Fire resources are spread thin. They have to priorities those near structures, etc. Highway 12 is closed on the eastside of White Pass where the PCT crosses. Fact of summer life here in the PNW.
@@reesesalen5033 Here in Washington and Oregon, many of fires are caused from human carelessness like campfires left unattended or not drowned out, sparks off chainsaws, motorcycles (dirt bikes) welding equipment, and cigarettes tossed out. Although the Pacific NW doesn't get many thunder and lightening storms, they do cause a fair share of the fires especially in the deep mountainous forest. I am 65 and there are way more fires these days than the 60s, 70s, 80s. More laws now that won't allow people to clear the forest of downed trees, etc. Therefore giving fires a lot of dry timber for fuel.
Be safe and get through! It’s like the trail has just turned into an escape room puzzle and it’s about wits as much as stamina. Every year the trail will be different. Having rigid expectations never works in any part of life!!
Alot of dry lighting strikes in southern Oregon. Lightening strikes are monitored over a three day period. A fire can start within that time. Your lucky your as far as you are because so much of that part of trail now closed.
The last year I did Oregon it was so dry water was a huge issue and the trees were exploding. One fell right in Mazama Village in the parking lot, missed all the cars and tourists and was pretty scary.
No water on the crest of the cascade range due to it draining straight through the ground i.e. porous lava rock. Makes you feel better about the AT doesn’t it?
There's ALOT of steps and protocol to get air resources to a fire especially when interagencies are all working together in the whole West spreading resources between all of the fires, and there are hundreds going on right now in the West.
yeah not like we can just dial up a chopper anytime ./ also they dont really put out the fire anyway, it just helps establish a fire break / containment line
Now just think of how much better your story will be. No fires = you get to tell a tale of a beautiful long hike. But with these you get to add dashes of adventure, and daring amidst all the beauty. Think how boring the Odyssey would have been if Odysseus just made it home on the first try.
743 miles left to go and you were still not even at 20 Jul yet. Keep on truckin' ! Look at it this way too - you are still doing the miles but you are seeing other things that the past PCTer's haven't so you are still being enriched with those new areas.
The fires are the result of global warming. I have lived here most of my life. I am thankful you hiked the pct through here while many forests still exist. God bless you, your hike, our forests, and the beautiful pct. ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
I’m a firefighter of 30 years. NOT GLOBAL WARMING THATS PROPOGANDA. It’s cause man stopped all fires in the past 25 years to “ save the forests”. And millions of miles built up duff and small trees and now it’s burning. If we’d left nature to do its thing instead of interference we wouldn’t be having these huge fires. Boots on the ground experience real life not propaganda!!!
@@livesoutdoors1708 sorry that was supposed to be a positive comment sorry if that was taken wrong he's just accomplished so much don't want him to be in danger. Sorry I will never comment again
The reason you aren't seeing planes attacking the crap out of these fires is because these western states would rather spend money elsewhere. Canada will lend us some planes every now and then, so that's nice. Forest management and infrastructure should be a top priority, but nah. Safe travels.
water availability and terrain are major issues. to your point, the funding is more spent on populated areas/// also they might be too busy with that monster fire not too far away
Regardless of political bias I think all You Tube creators, regardless of what category of content they are producing, or where they are on any political spectrum, they should be thinking about moving to other platforms because of censorship !
38 miles in a day. Inconceivable to this boy from Aliquippa. Props, and walk on.

Wow you had a couple of long hard days!! You are dealing with lots of obstacles and doing it quite well!! Stay strong, be safe!!
Just keep trekking man, don't let all these closures make you feel any less accomplished when you complete this amazing journey of yours.
Your channel is Outdoor Adventures. This has turned for sure into an adventure. Be safe , both of you.

Impressive hiking in the fire hazards.
Oregon seasons are basically winter wet. Summer dry
Its definitely the new normal for the west coast (I grew up in Washington State). My protocol is be safe around/in fire country. You got this!
WOW! I hope you were able to get some rest! Glad you avoided the fires and stayed safe! You got this! Such an amazing journey, thank you for sharing!

it's almost better to be close to the fire and not get all the smoke at least that smoke was going up and away/ hiking in smoke Sucks
Oh man! Manley's is known for their Chicken! Love Crescent Lake!
Had the same zipper issue with my Altaplex on the PCT. Had to send it in for a repair.

Thanks for your video. That was pretty intense, putting lots of extra miles in to get away from the fires. Hoping you stay safe!
🔥comment for the algorithm… you got this!

How the hell do all these fires get started?
@reesesalen5033
Human cause and thunderstorms are just a couple beginnings.

Thank you!

My friends had to shut the koa down. I was really wondering how this timed out on your trip.
Yikes u are close to the fire 😮, stay safe out there
Your videos are the most motivating and common sense ones that I have seen. Keep going.
Mile 1908 ! Crazy fires
Dry fuels, hot air, low humidity = fast fire spread

Oh that fire……it breaks my heart. Please be safe.
Hey. You’re alive and safe. Better to skip a few miles and achieve your goal destination Canadian Border. You can do it!!!
Washington's on fire again, too. Near White Pass and in the North Cascades. The new normal.
Lubricate your zipper with some thing. Even chapstick can help since it’s mostly wax.
Go!
Within nxt 5yrs , SOBO only way to complete a Tru thru hike. 🎉
Bigfoot lost a lot of weight!😮

How and where did you meet Bigfoot ?
It's in Under the Bridge episode.
Hitch up to Canada call it good. Call yourself a thru hiker on pct. You've done great. You can only do what trail offers which is bs
Troll you know nothing about being there.😂
