I love how the visuals of the entire song have her putting herself between Mirabel and the dangers. It emphasizes the point of the song, but it's also just really sweet.
It’s so cute watching the beginning of the movie and just seeing how close they r even before this song. Like when she mentions both of her sisters during The Family Madrigal Luisa gives her a thumbs up and when she is told to put a piano upstairs she all look out so I just think it’s sweet
Has anyone else noticed how even as much as she struggles to carry everything, she still manages to carry it, EXCEPT her door? I feel like that's symbolism as how her gift is the heaviest burden to her. (This is when she says "a light wind blows")
I love the animators for making a strong and “buff” female character while also making her graceful and vulnerable. I think a lot more people can identify with her character
yep i have watch someone guess encanto characters (I think his name is jackson wilds ) and he said she seems strong but soft inside. like her character design is simple but works
Something interesting about this movie is how these peoples’ gifts are gifts to the family and the community, but to those that hold them they’re responsibilities
I feel like it's pretty relatable even in the real world. People with talents for example are seen as people who were born with a gift that gets better and better, which will ultimately improve the image of society, whether that's through art, music, acting, engineering, science, medicine. But to those people individually they see it as something that pressures them due to the societal expectations. It's pretty interesting.
To think that she never complained, never blamed her younger sibling for having to deal with the "heavy stuff" and instead she just peacefully accepted her role as the big sister looking out for everybody, she really deserves the "Best Big Sister" award for all what she's done for the family.
When my sisters and I went to watch this movie in cinema, my younger sister (she's the middle sister) and I cried. We have a 6 year difference between us, but when I moved out, she learned the responsibilities I had because they were dumped onto her. We cried, understanding just how it feels to have to be the stronger person in the house. When we were younger, my parents fought a lot and I had to be the one to comfort and look after them, at a very young age. We see ourselves in Louisa and, we felt so seen in this song
"give it to your sister, it doesnt hurt, and see if she can handle every family burden. watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks" damn those lyrics hit hard man. you can literally see her tear up while singing those lyrics
i have to think that the animation for the last verse had to pull out and get silly and exaggerated because if anyone heard "give it to your sister and never wonder, if the same pressure would have pulled you under" in a straight, serious delivery... well, growing up in the midwest I know a lot of people who would have to Forget this song ever happened 🙃
the part that gets me every time is you can see how scared she looks but she’s still doing everything she can to protect mirabel. just reminds me a lot of having to put a brave face on for my younger siblings when i was suffering so much.
It reminded me when we were in this poor ranch at night and the bathroom was a whole outside. I was 8 and my little brother was 5 and he needed to go to the bathroom. I remember that while I was never afraid of the dark and “ghosts” as kids usually are, I was terrified of the bugs. But my father told me to get my little brother to the bathroom in the middle of the night and it was all pitch dark. My brother obviously was really scared, so I put up a strong and brave facade just to get my brother all the way and back to the house safe. I even remember when he asked me “Are you scared?” And I, incredibly scared of the animals that could be roaming the place, told him “No, it’s fine”.
I know how you feel I was my mother's, my twin's and my baby sister's therapist. I had to put on a brave face when they told me their problem and sadly I had to take care of my sisters. While my mom punches the wall I had to be the one to protect my sisters and try to calm down my mom
another thing is that immediately after, she protects mirabel from the hurling boulders forcing them to be pushed back to earth- with rocks and concrete as a juxtaposition from clouds and floating in the sky. she’s showing mirabel that while everyone’s living their perfect life with their amazing powers, she was forced to be strong for everyone and handle everything that no one sees. every pressure every crack every burden every problem, all the responsibilities because she’s the oldest and she’s reliable and she’s perfect. everything stacks up higher and heavier with every realization, and soon she’s carrying the weight of not just herself and her family, but the whole house, then the whole village and the mountains that surrounds it to protect them. and she’s not allowed to have any cracks, any breaks, and no mistakes. so no pressure!
And right after that, as the burdens keep piling up, we see how Luisa is tearing up, she's about to cry as she still holds up the burdens and prevents them from touching Mirabel; and at the same time, Mirabel's face grows more and more horrified as she realizes how much her sister is suffering and struggling as she shoulders that heavy weight. This song (and the movie as a whole) is extremely well-made and puts lots of attention to details. It's awesome.
I love the double meaning of the line at the end: "No cracks, no... breaks." meaning there are no breaks in *her* but also that she never *gets* a break from the pressure and responsibility. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lyrical genius.
I have listened to Hamilton so much I can hear his little signatures in his other songs, like when Luisa (Sorry if I got her name wrong) sings "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless, if I can't be of service!", or "I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this!?", I can just tell it's Lin-Manuel's handiwork and I love it.
Omg. Lin-Manuel was involved in this?! Of course he was. I thought I recognized his work when Delores tells Mariano. about her feelings- I got Hamilton vibes for sure.
This song really is an anthem for the older sibling. You're stuck between the burdens of your parents and younger siblings. You become the work horse of your parents while simultaneously being the protector and guide of your siblings. It really can make you feel worthless or like a screw up when unable to meet those expectations. Because usually your given a look of disappointment and not of understanding. "No mistakes, no breaks."
I was a young carer for my mum when I was 15 before she died and after that we moved in with my dad and he was never there I did the cooking the cleaning made sure my lil sister had lunch ect... This song is a banger and I identify with it so much 😍
My mom was sick when I was 9 and passed when I was 14 and something in me knew at 9 that I would be taking over her role in the family. My family even called me a “mini-mom”. I didn’t go out with friends out do anything and with everything going on and all this Covuu it d business I still feel like I’m in a motherly position even though my siblings are grown up now and my dad has remarried. It just feels like all my siblings were actually my kids the way I worry and fret over them.
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to realize that Luisa is associated with donkeys because they’re beasts of burden, and that’s how people treat her.
I like how she still likes feminine things like wearing dresses and dreams about unicorns. A lot of the time were told you either have to be masculine or feminine you cant be bth but its nice to see characters who are both
i love how luisa’s physical appearance seemingly has nothing to do with her gift. even as she starts to lose her magic, her muscles never actually go away. it really just shows how much pressure she was under to constantly train and get stronger for those around her
YES EXACTLY!!! And if you noticed, when there were pictures of everyone as little kids, when their gifts were just given to them. Louisa was a normal little girl, she wasn't buff or anything, all that was her training
Apparently the character artists really had to fight to keep Luisa's design. Disney originally wanted her to be a typical Disney girl, but the artists insisted on having her be muscular to show that women can have different body types. Plus I really like that even though Luisa is buff, she's still quite feminine. She's my favourite character...plus I'm an elder sibling too so I might be a bit biased.
@@jdprettynails That was one of my favourite aspects of her too. Yeah she's buff and tough but she still wears a nice dress and does her hair up all pretty. She still has a lot of the stereotypical "pretty girl" features and traits while being an absolute powerhouse and her personality is just "I'm the big sister, it's my job to be reliable. I don't care if it's hard I'm gonna look after you".
@@wendillon92 OMG i feel the same way towards my little sister even if she doesn't understand how I feel I try to protect and look after he with all I've got.
@@jdprettynails while the sight of tipical Disney girl just casually carring boulders is amusing to me i understand why they designed her like this, still i hope we get a series of encanto, i want to see a flashback with tween luisa just casually Pushing boulders.
I am an older brother, and I get what you mean too. Honestly, it is sometimes tough to even try and accept support from the younger siblings and you NEED to protect everything around you.
I was listening to the song while I was going through the comments and while I was reading the line in the song I am pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service in the song it said it exactly on the right time😂
@@feysandthings8675 yes, I know what you are talking about, I have one sister and two cousins and they feel like siblings to me and I am the oldest of the four of us and all the pressure to be the good one falls on me
As the youngest, I couldn’t help but think of my older sister.. and honestly sobbed hard last night jamming to this. she takes care of two kids and everyone in my immediate family looks at her like she’s not enough. But I’ve always looked so high up to her, never haven’t.
Mirabels expression through the song really fits for how disconnected with her family she is. She’s literally confused for like half the song, not understanding the lyrics until after the relaxation bit, where she realizes how troubled Luisa actually is; not being able to relax and always having to work hard for the family.
The physical weight of everything actually isn't the thing that weighs her down but the expectation and fear of failure. She can handle anything thrown at her except when it comes to her family . I love this movie for the simple fact that they were able to portray the imperfect aspects of family perfectly. 👌👌
Yall people are rude as shit. Op was just saying what they got from the song. Nothing at all wrong with them wanting to share it with others. Good grief 🙄
It's never talked about but luisa is literally 19, she's still a kid and she has to basically be the knight of the family. Not to mention they get their gifts when they're 5 so she's had to be "the strong one" ever since she was a little girl. I feel like that's one of the reasons her relaxing scene in this is unicorns and pink clouds, because she never had a real childhood. Something else I noticed is at 2:36 she looks more like a little kid than she does in the whole movie and I think they did that for a reason.
The other really telling moment of how she’s still just a kid herself with all this pressure on her is how she calls the older generation of their family the “grownups” in the next part 🥺 like so telling that she feels all this weight on her but doesn’t even view herself as an adult yet.
The vocals here were amazing the emphasis the voice actor was able to portrays it was like she was actually catching the weight. It was amazing on this persons part. We need to find out who it was
I remember the first time I watched this movie, I texted my oldest sister and just told her I loved her and I was proud of her. She basically had to parent my older sister, me and my younger sister for a long time while still trying to be herself, figure out who she was and whole bunch of other things going on. I called her for like an hour, bawling my eyes out.
It's to represent how crushing the weight of her power is because of peoples' expectations of her. That's why it blows away and she's suddenly soaring free from carrying anything and is instead carried by something else.
As a woman with a fairly deep, androgynous voice, I just want to say how surprising and nice it is to get a female character and a song that don't shy away from sounding strong and somewhat masculine, without that being the butt of a joke or the defining characteristic of that person. It's the first time I've ever been like, "hey, that animated woman sounds like me, but she's singing something beautiful and sensitive in her normal voice and that's not being treated as weird"
I love this song especially because of how relatable it is. I am the oldest like Luisa and know how it feels to have to stay strong, and not cry. I've always thought that crying is a sign of weakness and now never cry infront of anyone. And when I do its after a long period of time. I too have a deep voice for a girl. And the way Luisa sings this makes me wonder if anyone else in the family could've sung it so beautifully. Ive always thought my voice sounded weird because it was deeper than most girls but this song reminds me that, that has nothing to do with it. Even if you can't sing high doesn't mean your can't be amazing.
As a woman who was constantly bullied by the fact that I had a "non-feminine" voice throughout school ages, mother of god didn't I had an instant love for Luisa's voice and character in general
Her voice is Beautiful, it's a tone of voice I hear often in women around me as a latino and I think it's great to hear a voice like hers being represented and not used as a joke
You live or work in a weird area where that seems to be a problem to you. Well, maybe not a problem, just how you maybe see the world. Where I'm from, We love women like that here and always welcome them, it's not even a rarity here.
I love how she is not the stereotypical "strong dumbass" character, she actually has a personality, is mentally well rounded (for the most part lol, girl is suffering from some severe anxiety in this song) and not just a brainless fighting machine, she has a struggle and an arc throughout the movie and even has her own solo song number. She is overall a legitimate character and not just a mindless buffoon used for action or as the butt of the joke Very empowering for strong women and extremely refreshing
@@davidharshman7645 yeah most strong characters in cartoons are either mean, disgusting or an imbecile, so its refreshing to see a muscular woman that is both strong, feminine and well rounded
Was digging for this comment! It’s way too common in media for strong men in to be idiots and strong women to be just straight up mean but Luisa is just perfection as far as writing goes
If there was a sequel or a series, I want them to give her a boyfriend. Not some wiry weak man or a super strong one, either. Just a normal man being ok with her strength without being threatened. It wouldn’t even have to be the main storyline, just in the background as they have a normal relationship with neither being a joke.
This song hits really hard and especially the line where she said "I'm pretty sure i'm worthless if I can't be of service." This song is one of the best in the movie in my opinion. Luisa is one of the more underrated characters in the movie but she goes through so much and I think it's really unfair.
“But wait, if I should shake, the crushing weight of expectations - Would that free some room up for joy…” I love how that line then moves into the part with her donkey dance number, showing a lighthearted moment within this stressful song; there is stress under the surface, but under that is this fun and joyful person looking to break free. How sweet - I love this song!
Lighthearted - but not for a second after they fall from the clouds. Look at Luisa's face as she stares, resigned, down at her younger sister's horrified expression. Luisa's face shows her suffering but inability to ask for help - her entire self-worth based on performative strength.
people talk about "we don't talk about bruno" but this song is a real masterpiece. it was made for the movie and for a specific character but it's so relatable it makes you empathize and feel her burden at a spiritual level (i cried my eyes out during this scene). i don't have siblings, i'm an only child and i swear i could feel her pressure but also how strong (mentally) she was if she had to endure those moments of weakness by herself during all her life.
Both songs were written by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda...creator and writer of Hamilton, In The Heights, and several songs from Moana...including "How Far I'll Go"
[Luisa:] I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is I move mountains, I move churches And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is I don't ask how hard the work is Got a rough, indestructible surface Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded, but Under the surface I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus Under the surface Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"? Under the surface I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack That breaks the camel's back What breaks the camel's back? It's Pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that'll never stop, whoa-oh Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, your sister's older Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder Who am I if I can't run with the ball? If I fall to Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger See if she can hang on a little longer Who am I if I can't carry it all? If I falter Under the surface I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry somethin' is gonna hurt us Under the surface The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is Under the surface I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this? Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows You try to stop it tumblin', but on and on it goes But wait, if I could shake, the crushing weight Of expectations, would that free some room up for joy Or relaxation, or simple pleasure? Instead, we measure this growing pressure (pressure) Keeps growing (pressure), keep going (pressure), 'cause all we know is Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa-oh Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt and See if she can handle every family burden Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks No mistakes, just Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh Give it to your sister and never wonder If the same pressure would've pulled you under Who am I if I don't have what it takes? No cracks, no breaks No mistakes! No pressure!
I love how Luisa's character is a representative of older sisters who have families who are tough on them because they're older and they expect so much of them. It's really hard, and as an oldest sister, I'm not the type to complain, I just pick up all of my sibling's messes and clear up all of their mistakes because I'd be blamed for it. I can't show any weaknesses because they'll think I'm over exaggerating. I can't cry because they'll say it's an excuse. No matter how stressed I am, I keep going. Regardless of how negative my thoughts are if I were to disobey what they say or what to do. If anything happens to my hermanos, I have to take full responsibility from them. She's indeed very strong, and not just from a physical standpoint.
I think it's the same for other siblings too. I was the youngest but I was expected to watch out for my siblings as the only girl and keep them out of trouble. If they got in trouble we were punished together. I was expected to carry the emotional burdens of my siblings as well as both my parents (for whatever reason, they put a lot of heavy things on me from a young age, toting me around to attend 'adult' talks.) As well as maintaining the complicated dynamic of family secrets, who to mention what too and don't ever mess it up or everyone will blame you and your family will fall apart.
Yea same here, I may not be a girl, but I am the oldest with an active military parent. It really is pressuring. I can really relate, especially with the resting part.
@@chriserony I was the middle child and the second of two girls. But both my siblings were troublemakers and I was the responsible one so I got all the burdens. My mom treated me like a therapist, my siblings treated me like a maid, a tutor, a cook. This song makes me feel so seen.
I'm just glad her motief goes with donkeys/mules, the go to animals associated with carrying all the heavy burdens across reliably. The fact that they are making her carry even the donkeys really highlights how much work and expectations she must've been under.
The biggest reason I like a lot of the disney songs, is cause they have an actual meaning and the lyrics aren’t just an afterthought to a funky beat. This one in particular has a great message.
the fact that Luisa looks stressed and nervous but when she notices that Mirabel is scared she immediately acts differently. it’s amazing how such a small detail can tell a lot about the character holy hell thanks for the likes 😳
Yup. Or that split second she Mirabel's glasses get knocked off kilter, Luisa is all over it, carefully making sure Mirabel is safe and ok before she turns around to face something else. Just... Perfect split second moment showing just how much she super cares for all of her family and just wants to protect them.
My heart broke throughout the song as I thought of my older sister who definitely is a lot like Luisa, having to shoulder so much on her own. Thanks Ate for everything you do, I'm so grateful to have someone like you in my life 🥺
I think this song is relatable for everyone! As someone with no siblings, but have been in abusive situations their entire life and feeling responsible for looking after your family despite it not being your job. You feel so responsible for everyone!
I was a carer for both my parents before they died. I'm now looking after my uncle. Only child but I had to be the srong one. I couldn't break because if i did everyone else would.
@@Squishy2531 I’m sorry, I know it’s unfair for all of it to fall on you. But.. idk.. Not everyone is this strong, I wasn’t strong enough to take care of my dad.. and I wasn’t strong enough to be something for him. But I’m glad that people like u exist, cause we need you!!
It’s a mark of a great song/character when so many people can see themselves in them. Giving a voice to what many older siblings have felt before…and doing it with a heck of a beat. 👏👏👏
@@artimation4710 I've listened to this song over and over and honestly I'm still learning about Luisa's character. One part I found interesting is when she mentions that the "ship doesn't swerve has it heard how big the iceberg is". I think she's talking about how their Abuela might be noticing that something is wrong with the miracle but pretends that nothing is wrong. If the "ship" was the family then Abuela would be the captain that is stubbornly not swerving away from the Iceberg. I don't know if that's exactly what she meant but that's what makes it such a cool song! It's got a lot of depth to it.
@@artimation4710 Also another thing to notice is you pay attention throughout the movie, Luisa is asked to do pretty much everything. Even when she doesn't necessarily need to be the one to do it. There's Mirabel, Mirabel's Dad, and Mirabel's uncle that could easily help but they still ask Luisa to do most everything. Anyway thanks for letting me rant! I adore Luisa's character 😁
I like how her voice is deeper and stronger when she talks about her strength but when she speaks about her fears and vulnerabilities, her voice softens like when she says pressure like a drip.
I've listed this song plenty of times and just now it really hit me "If I can't take it, who am I?"... As a mother with 2 little kids who stays home to make sure that the kids grow up well and as a wife whos her husband work 2-3 jobs just to make it till the end of the month, trust me there's a LOT of pressure... Knowing that if either of us fall, we all fall...
Every time I watch this I notice more and more. Hercules literally runs away and Louisa slays the monster. When she says “a light wind blows” it’s literally a tornado. More illustrations of how she’s always the one that has to solve the problems no one else wants to deal with and then she minimizes just how hard it all is for her to keep the peace. I love this song so much.
I love how they made a woman this big physically strong woman. It gives the world a visual of the role a lot of women really play in the family, the ones that hold everything up, who holds everything together doing 100 things at a time. The image the world usually gets is of Atlas holding the world up but oftentimes it's women who do it silently and without complaint, keeping a straight face for our loved ones and not letting them know that their needs and demands are breaking our backs. Pressure indeed.
sounds like a personal issue in your relationship if your work at home isn't balanced or you do everything alone, my gf and I do it together as it should be, and we both go work too
@@WowTeh I'm not talking about in romantic relationships although that could apply. The movie is talking about families and generations of what is expected out of each family member. For example Isabella was expected to marry and produce more children with gifts. It didn't matter if she loved him or not. The message abulea kept giving about sacrifice for the family is passed down to women in a way a lot of men don't understand which you kind of exhibited by assuming I was speaking of a romantic relationship.
@@DeeDee-fv2sv could it also be because Abuela's direct relatives, except Camilo and Bruno are women? I think they were all pressured in a way, but we focus more on Mirabell, of course cause she is the protagonist, and her sisters. But the pressure made Bruno leave the Family. And well, I think that's just the fact of having a gift that put the characters in distress in a way and not their gender.
@@mirandaminattasosa81 I see your point, but when you look at the grandchildren Camillo is just allowed to be young and have fun, doing small tasks like shape shifting and babysitting so the children don't cry. Luisa's name is literally being called every 2 minutes by someone and it's wearing her down. Isabella is expected to be perfect, marry the most perfect man in town, and make gifted babies. Nobody cared if she loved him or not. Bruno had pressure, but was allowed to escape because his power threatened the image of their perfect utopia. Could you image any of the women leaving for a decade without abuela missing the use of their powers for their people?
The way your phrased your text just made it sound like you had personal bad experiences or something and I just thought you were venting about it in some way. Are there issues in your country regarding these topics? I'm not english so I just understood you had experienced bad family or relationship situations
Never related to a disney song more than this one.. this one hit really deep. Made me cry when i first heard us.. this whole movie made was so relatable.
Loved the part where Luisa smiled and adjusted Mirabel's glasses after saving her from the iceberg. Shows how much she cares and worries for her sister.
Honestly it helped me significantly to sit down and talk about what was going on with my brothers and how difficult some things were but it didn't mean I didn't like my position in the family either. It's made me who I am I just needed help once in a while too. They talked about their issues as youngest and middle too. I've gotta wonder if any younger siblings saw this and had it click for them.
@@brattrox2939 yes, my older sister is carrying everything in the family. This song clicked me like a bullet and now im helping her with more chores so she can have more free time.
The symbolism behind Mirabel seeing her sister from behind, only able to see her strong broad back, unable to see her face, where all the stress and strain Luisa is under really shows, is so powerful. My favorite moment is where the rocks are falling and she catches them, one after the other, her strength coming through every time after only a little struggle and all Mirabel can do is watch her sister withstand such immense weight and pain, knowing that even a fraction would kill her is so damn powerful. The lyrics are amazing and the imagery along with it is so powerful, this is the best song of them all, in my opinion. I get chills every time I hear it, and i feel everything Luisa feels to my absolute core. Every family has the strong one, here's to my fellow strong men and women, we got this, but take a break sometimes, it really is okay.
During that "falling rocks" scene at the end, watch Luisa's eyes. They're pleading. Her body is doing its job so easily, but emotionally she is just begging to be taken care of for once. Like, "I got you, I'll catch the rocks, that part is easy for me, but at some point, I'll need somebody to care for me."
@@Kevinhall11 That's always where I cry. I can't handle all the lines that imply the family is watching Luisa struggle like it is a fun family game: "See if she can hang on a little longer", "Watch as she buckles and bends, but never breaks", and "See if she can handle every family burden". It really fits the opening scene of the tight-rope circus. Everyone watching her reach her limits without a hand to help.
@@ronhoward121 The animation doesn't really draw attention to it, or amplify it, but the most impactful of those lines is "give it to your sister and never wonder/if the same pressure would have pulled you under".
"I'm pretty sure I'm useless, if I can't be of service" It's crazy how abuela made Luisa think that she's nothing without the super strength. Glad that Alma managed to get by at the end💀
It hits harder when the fact that Luisa is Mirabel's older sister finally hits you and you realize that this song is also about how hard Luisa works to be a role model for her younger sister and tries so hard to protect her throughout the entire song, she feels like she has to burden everything and be the strong one (in every way) in order to be a good big sister for Mirabel
It also refers to the problem for oldest sisters, that they have to shoulder part of the parenting, when the oarents can't handle all younger children (and all other stuff) at once. Oldest sisters have to watch the younger siblings, do more chores, take responsibilities (that they can't fail).
Minor detail, but I feel like the donkeys are a reference to her feelings as a "beast of burden" which fits thematically with her emotions. Overall, probably the most impactful song of the movie
Absolutely, i adore the metaphor of the donkeys representing Luisa. You can also interpret the donkeys (who're culturally seen as 'ugly' animals), to coincide with her own opinion on her physical looks (even tho she's gorgeous and has one of my favourite character designs ever) cause girls aren't 'meant' to be bodybuilders, or have that sort of figure, they're meant to be small and fragile, and I think that disparity between her identity as a woman and her personal identity is a big contributor to her issues of self-worth. It's such a genius metaphor and she's gorgeous, but she won't see herself that way because she's not society's definition of 'pretty'. Ugh this film is so good.
And that's just like a hypothesis from them being there and what's shown of her low self worth through song. I'd love to see them delve into that in any future content, being what's considered an 'imperfect' woman romantically, I'd actually love to see her meet someone who can match her at her level and help share the burden without complaining :))
@@heatherheath3834 nah, one thing about Luisa that I loved was the fact that her issues never revolved around her appearance. I loved that she was comfortable in her own skin as it would be easy to make her structure the main focus. Even in her song she sings about her appearance in an uplifting manner before venting her actual frustrations
It fits her pretty well. Donkeys are beasts of burden, able to carry large loads and travel long distances. They come off as abrasive, but are actually sweet, gentle creatures to their loved ones. And the fact they can be stubborn as hell in the worst ways.
I'd agree, none of them stop using their gifts or stop helping people they just change the way they do things and get help which is exactly what you have to do in real life. After all, some pressure and responsibility make us better however too much breaks us. We can't avoid this, but rather we have to find healthy ways to do deal with it.
2:48 this part gets me EVERYTIME i start getting emotional , just shows her warrior mentality on no matter what comes her way She’ll overcome it When she lifts it def adds to the emotional feeling
"Give it to your sister, your sister's older see if she can hang on a little longer" "Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder" Give it to your sister, *IT DOESN'T HURT AND SEE IF SHE CAN HANDLE EVERY FAMILY BURDEN* Give it to your sister, *AND NEVER WONDER IF THE SAME PRESSURE WOULD HAVE PULLED YOU UNDER* I really love this song! When "give it to your sister parts come out I literally 🌟SiNg and ShOuT❤ Relatable🤧😊
As the oldest sibling of my family I understand the pressure. I have 7 younger siblings and I had to help raise them so I know that feeling of always having to be at your peak. Never letting them see how tired you are and how much you gave up just to make them happy and help them grow. I regret none of it but I can look back and go wow. Damn.
Maann the part where the boulders are falling on Luisa and she's struggling to keep them up and Mirabel watches in horror because she finally realizes how heavy of a burden her big sister is carrying. Everything about that scene is so fucking moving it brought me to tears because it speaks to the reality so many people face and seeing Mirabel finally see that and understand is so amazing because that rarely happens for people in Luisa's position no matter how much they wish for that.
Small detail, but I love when Luisa fixes Mirabel's glasses after the iceberg. It just goes to show how much she puts into helping and protecting people, from moving houses, to fixing someone's look.
And directly afterward when she takes a moment to relax, Mirabel nearly loses her glasses in the floaty cloud area. Having to scramble to get them back for herself.
Now, this is the only song that made me cry. Like full-on sob (dos orugitas I felt bad and teared up but didn't cry) Surface Pressure hit a little too close to home. As an older sibling definitely. I'm 19 as well (like Luisa) with two little brothers but all I've heard since I was little was. "Set an example" "You're the first born so be a good example" "You're setting a bad example" and so much more pressure-inducing phrases that began flooding back as soon as I saw this: "Do better for your brothers." "Don't give them a bad name." "Don't do this. Do that." and so on and so on. It is definitely painful when they come back and haunt you.
As an older sister, this song just hits home. I’d do anything to protect my younger sister. But the stress gets to be a lot being the oldest and being told you can handle it.
Good morning! This is Adam's copper from the Samsung company. Why have you not claimed your Samsung winning prize all this while from our Samsung head office?
i know the deep pain when you are the old one and you start to crack and you just want a little break but people tell you : " no, you can do this, just don't worry." as if it's a problem of self confidence. it's not, I'm just getting tired.but no one understands and then i am looked as the moody one,the edgy one.
It's a very little known story about a shipwreck called the Titanic. It wasn't the top of the iceberg that ripped the hole in the ship it was everything underneath. Icebergs are massively huge under the surface
Song written by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda...creator and writer of Hamilton, In The Heights, and several songs from Moana...including "How Far I'll Go"
I loved it during the last drip drip drip verse where she's holding all the rocks in front of maribel, her expression is not angry, it's hopeless. It caught me off guard.
I absolutely love when Luisa says "can I somehow preserve this" she is gently fixing Mirabel's glasses looking her directly in the eyes. Especially in contrast to the intensity of punching through an iceberg just seconds before. That is the moment that truly captures this song to me and is full of so much love.
Everybody talking about the "worthless" line But I honestly connect to the "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under" line. As the oldest sister, this hit so HARD because the oldest usually tries to take all the pressure to prevent their younger sibling/siblings from having to deal with that. Like, no don't think about me, you just move on and just know you'll be fine with one less scratch. I try to handle the most stressful situations if it's in my hands and would do it in a heartbeat because I already know what it's like and how to handle it, even if they have no clue, which to people who take the stress and responsibility feel better that they're not stressing about the situation at all.
YEEEEEEEES! I'm the oldest sister and that line gave me chills cause when there's family problems, the oldest sibling always takes the charge of taking care of my siblings. Also the line "Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt. And see if she can handle every family burden" hit me hard.
Both of you got the same lines stuck as I did.. as the eldest I handled both of our parent's deaths I took on taking care of our Mom when she got ill I never asked my little brother for help Because as the Older Sister I HAD to be okay... he didnt.
I used to think like that until I realize its hypocritical to put the needs of others before your own. Doing all you can to help others achieve their goals without having a goal of your own makes u a hypocrite.
@@xlegacyzero8878 From my perspective, there is nothing valuable about me as a person. I have tried to become a better person, but I don’t have anything good about just being me. So the only value I have is in what I can do for other people. Hence, “I’m worthless if I can’t be of service.”
@@83gemm i don't know u but if u r a woman u have inherent value in your womb. The need to serve other is a perfect quality in a mother n a wife while also contributing to the future of the family. But if u r a male life is a bit harder. We don't have any inherent value, we have to struggle n climb 4 everything we get. This is true.. It is not only related to the oldest age.. It is related to who bears the responsibility (I mean by that his responsibility and the responsibility of others)
My whole life I had to protect my sibling during the pandemic I had to support a whole family at 19 the pressure of college and working full time being there for mom even now I have so much pressure and I heard this song at the theater and finally cracked I'm trying to pick up the pieces but you never truly know how much love and support you have until you crack I cry Everytime I hear this song it's hard to carry the weight of the family for so long and for so long thanklessly
I enjoy how this isnt just about physical strength but also mental and emotional strength. We can all relate to this song because someone is counting on us in some way, and we dont want to break under the pressure.
The line “under the surface I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service” truly hit home for me, in all I feel like I can relate to this song. Edit: thanks for the likes :)
@Fa Y thank you very much as a Christian I know non Christian find people like you annoying but I love that you took the time out of your day to write this god is proud 😊
“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service“, “Give it to your sister, and never wonder if the same pressure would’ve pulled you under” DAMN THESE LINES-
The thing that humors me is that when they go to the different places even though she is making a song about how much pressure she has Mirabell still does what she says happens, look at Louisa for help
Actually, no. She's a victim and just because she got stronger through the abuse we shouldn't praise that. She shouldn't have to be like that, you know?
@@antifornicator of course, it's just that everything she's portrayed as is just the result of poor treatment by the family. (I might be a bit prejudiced because of own experiences. It just feels for me that praising people for traits they learned through trauma takes away from the pain they felt)
This song reminds me so much of my own mother, also named Luisa, but that's not the whole reason. She was actually born the youngest of 7 kids, half of which were almost adults when she was born, so she got the short end of the stick every time, and a lot of the problems caused by other members of the family ended up falling onto her shoulders, but instead of crumbling, she took the responsibility that no one wanted to take just to keep things stable. She was also very slight and tiny when she was young, which she hated, so she worked out a lot and got pretty buff, which she was always very proud of throughout her years of military service (another example of her willingness to protect and help those that would never see her do it or even care). I love you with all my heart, Ma. You're the strongest woman I'll ever know ❤
I like the symbolism this has just because it doesn't just measure her physical strength, but the will and expectation to withstand responsibility and having to deal with more difficult things because that's what you're good at. And then you hold yourself to those expectations because that's what everyone else sees you as. You're the strong one, so it's rare that anyone ever asks if you're ok. It's not just relatable in a sibling sense. It's in any kinda relationship. I'm usually the leader and therapist of all my friends and I've always kinda been everyone's pillar. Everyone comes to me to vent and kinda use me to talk to about stuff and get advice. I've got my own demons but I've always been willing to take on more of everyone else's bs. Eventually I did go "pop" and I just stopped shouldering everyone's burdens. I've learned the hard way not to stretch myself so thin anymore. I still wanna be compassionate and show my friends I care, but I can't keep taking on everyones problems anymore. I can't try to save everyone else while I, myself, am struggling to keep myself afloat. I literally cried the first time I watched this. I was watching this with my bf who laughed at this cuz it looked silly, but I was feeling it and I was honestly kinda mad at him. But I get that not everyone over analyses things and or are empathetic.
Thank you for sharing that Kirasido. I hope you are continuing to look after yourself, and are putting yourself first. Like you said, we have to love, look after and nurture ourselves first. And in my experience, people will continue to appreciate and cherish you even if you don't spread yourself overmuch for them. I hope you are safe and well, despite this pandemic. Take care.
It's such a small detail but I love how they made Luisa physically strong AND feminine. They could have easily made her a brother. They could have gone the oh-so-hilarious trope and had her constantly be mistaken for a guy.
Understanding her struggle through this song just makes her line in I think the ending song of the movie that much better. She sings “But sometimes I cry” and then both her sisters hug her and say “So do I!” Like they’re saying, “we see now how much you carry and it’s okay to be not okay sometimes, it happens to all of us and we’re here for you!” I thought that was a beautiful moment
I am not the older child rather the youngest one, and i think thats what my older brother feels. But i can still feel much of it, the pressure under being the perfect kind of child. This song just hits hard

I love how the visuals of the entire song have her putting herself between Mirabel and the dangers. It emphasizes the point of the song, but it's also just really sweet.
I think since Mirabel doesnt have a gift, she will hurt herself the most among the family so she must be protected.... I guess?
It’s so cute watching the beginning of the movie and just seeing how close they r even before this song. Like when she mentions both of her sisters during The Family Madrigal Luisa gives her a thumbs up and when she is told to put a piano upstairs she all look out so I just think it’s sweet

We see ourselves in Louisa and, we felt so seen in this song

the part that gets me every time is you can see how scared she looks but she’s still doing everything she can to protect mirabel. just reminds me a lot of having to put a brave face on for my younger siblings when i was suffering so much.
I am the 999th like! (:
I know how you feel I was my mother's, my twin's and my baby sister's therapist. I had to put on a brave face when they told me their problem and sadly I had to take care of my sisters. While my mom punches the wall I had to be the one to protect my sisters and try to calm down my mom

I love how Mirabel looks at Luisa at 2:27. There’s no fear even though they’re floating in mid air, all she sees is safety and love in her sister ❤️
because it's what she wanted mirabelle to see.
Reminds me of Heaven. There's no worries and that's what I think Luisa's referring to
another thing is that immediately after, she protects mirabel from the hurling boulders forcing them to be pushed back to earth- with rocks and concrete as a juxtaposition from clouds and floating in the sky.
she’s showing mirabel that while everyone’s living their perfect life with their amazing powers, she was forced to be strong for everyone and handle everything that no one sees. every pressure every crack every burden every problem, all the responsibilities because she’s the oldest and she’s reliable and she’s perfect.
everything stacks up higher and heavier with every realization, and soon she’s carrying the weight of not just herself and her family, but the whole house, then the whole village and the mountains that surrounds it to protect them.
and she’s not allowed to have any cracks, any breaks, and no mistakes. so no pressure!
It's awesome.

that hug that Mirabel gives after Surface Pressure is adorable
I find Luisa’s little pout when she admits to having felt weak so adorable too. She’s tries to act like a tough bear but actually is just a teddy bear

I love the double meaning of the line at the end: "No cracks, no... breaks." meaning there are no breaks in *her* but also that she never *gets* a break from the pressure and responsibility. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lyrical genius.
I think that's the line that gets me the most.
Yes it's the perfect double meaning
also for how the house has cracks and spoilers.. how the town cracks and mountain breaks at the end.
"No mistakes, no breaks."

i love how luisa’s physical appearance seemingly has nothing to do with her gift. even as she starts to lose her magic, her muscles never actually go away. it really just shows how much pressure she was under to constantly train and get stronger for those around her
YES EXACTLY!!!
2:36 is such an intense moment like I can feel all her emotions 🥺
The other really telling moment of how she’s still just a kid herself with all this pressure on her is how she calls the older generation of their family the “grownups” in the next part 🥺 like so telling that she feels all this weight on her but doesn’t even view herself as an adult yet.
Great take 👍🏿

I called her for like an hour, bawling my eyes out.
The fact that Luisa can lift everything except her own DOOR is just pure perfection.
Holy shit that's such a good detail, I didn't even notice
it shows she is a caring and selfless person that is able to carry others but her wants and needs

She is overall a legitimate character and not just a mindless buffoon used for action or as the butt of the joke
Very empowering for strong women and extremely refreshing
She manages to be strong and large while still being VERY feminine. She is really well animated and voiced.
😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If there was a sequel or a series, I want them to give her a boyfriend. Not some wiry weak man or a super strong one, either. Just a normal man being ok with her strength without being threatened. It wouldn’t even have to be the main storyline, just in the background as they have a normal relationship with neither being a joke.
This song is perfect and her voice is incredible. Best new Disney movie ever. Thank You Disney
This song hits really hard and especially the line where she said "I'm pretty sure i'm worthless if I can't be of service." This song is one of the best in the movie in my opinion. Luisa is one of the more underrated characters in the movie but she goes through so much and I think it's really unfair.

Remember the line when someone asked her to move a RIVER. Like common people giver her a break!

I laughed when I noticed that the donkeys are wearing purple glitter eye shadow when they're riding in them through the sky XD

Both songs were written by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda...creator and writer of Hamilton, In The Heights, and several songs from Moana...including "How Far I'll Go"
True. This song is way better then the bruno song . Needs more views then what it has now .
Bruno is the more musical song and if Encanto is made into a live theater version will be amazing, but this has so much more meaning and feels.

I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is
I don't ask how hard the work is
Got a rough, indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em
I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded, but
Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service
A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack
That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back? It's
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that'll never stop, whoa-oh
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
If I fall to
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
If I falter
Under the surface
I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry somethin' is gonna hurt us
Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?
Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows
You try to stop it tumblin', but on and on it goes
But wait, if I could shake, the crushing weight
Of expectations, would that free some room up for joy
Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead, we measure this growing pressure (pressure)
Keeps growing (pressure), keep going (pressure), 'cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa-oh
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt and
See if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
No mistakes, just
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
Who am I if I don't have what it takes?
No cracks, no breaks
No mistakes!
You’re right actually, because Luisa’s a middle child of the family, relating to siblings elder, younger, and between
I relate to this comment a lot cuz im a older sibling and my mother babys my sister too much lol
Woah I didn't think about this. Thank you for this insight

This one in particular has a great message.
the fact that Luisa looks stressed and nervous but when she notices that Mirabel is scared she immediately acts differently. it’s amazing how such a small detail can tell a lot about the character

For me, it seems as if she feels that she has to be tough around the family, so everyone believes she can handle the weight of everyone’s pressure
Yup. Or that split second she Mirabel's glasses get knocked off kilter, Luisa is all over it, carefully making sure Mirabel is safe and ok before she turns around to face something else. Just...

Anyone notice that donkeys, a beast of burden, are literally part of her daily burden?
I Love it😍
During that "falling rocks" scene at the end, watch Luisa's eyes.
That sounds deep
It also refers to the problem for oldest sisters, that they have to shoulder part of the parenting, when the oarents can't handle all younger children (and all other stuff) at once. Oldest sisters have to watch the younger siblings, do more chores, take responsibilities (that they can't fail).
As an older sibling this is exactly how it feels knowing that the younger kids look up to you
And then there's Isa, the actual oldest sibling who doesn't give a fuck.
@@carolina12195 Isa being perfect would add to Luisa's pressure, if she does fail, she's compared to perfection
OH MAN I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT!!!!
I love that she doesn't just go "I don't wanna do this anymore, I'm free" at the end, she just opens and let's others help her.
I'd agree, none of them stop using their gifts or stop helping people they just change the way they do things and get help which is exactly what you have to do in real life. After all, some pressure and responsibility make us better however too much breaks us. We can't avoid this, but rather we have to find healthy ways to do deal with it.

It wasn't the top of the iceberg that ripped the hole in the ship it was everything underneath. Icebergs are massively huge under the surface
@@courttheshort87 omgg that's so smart. Thank you so much!!
@@courttheshort87 ah yes truly an obscure story

@@charaidk8708 CHCHCH THAT WAS SO WHOLESOME-
"watch as she bends and buckles but never breaks" this one lyric hits me straight in the heart
I love the fear and determination on Luisa's face. The animators did a hell of a job animating her inner struggles.
They also did pretty well with abuelas crying during the caterpillar song at the end
I loved it during the last drip drip drip verse where she's holding all the rocks in front of maribel, her expression is not angry, it's hopeless. It caught me off guard.
@@andrewjankowski528 just the resignation in her face. It was amazing
I absolutely love when Luisa says "can I somehow preserve this" she is gently fixing Mirabel's glasses looking her directly in the eyes. Especially in contrast to the intensity of punching through an iceberg just seconds before. That is the moment that truly captures this song to me and is full of so much love.
never noticed that! thats so cool to think about
Everybody talking about the "worthless" line
But I honestly connect to the "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under" line.
Both of you got the same lines stuck as I did.. as the eldest I handled both of our parent's deaths I took on taking care of our Mom when she got ill I never asked my little brother for help Because as the Older Sister I HAD to be okay... he didnt.
I remember crying the first time I saw this in theaters. This is such an amazing movie
Just recently seeing the movie, and cried my eyes out! Playing the songs on repeat lol
"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless, If I can't be of service." damn that line hits me where it hurts
Same. For real.
I had to close my food pantry it was too much..... I deal with self worth since I'm not helping others
Definitely hit home for me as well
That one didn't just hit home, it hit my bed
"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if i can't be of service" I relate to this line more than anything
That line made me start crying.
@@83gemm me too😭
I used to think like that until I realize its hypocritical to put the needs of others before your own.
Just think about this when u see the passion in another person's goal there is something beautiful about it, isn't there? U r missing that beauty, its something that can't be borrowed only earned. Contrary to women who have inherent value a man's value goes up with time. He only needs to keep moving forward.

This is truly what anxiety feels like. You're strong indeed but actually getting crushed under pressure which is made by yourself
I love this song... it makes you feel the responsibility that older siblings have towards their younger siblings
But I feel all her pressure even I am the younger one ;-;
@@asyawiazri1989 Luisa is not even the oldest, i think this song is for everyone that feels like this pressure, I'm also the youngest and feel like i have to do everything perfect, no mistakes cause Im young and should be able to handle everything (sorry for my english, Im from Argentina :3 )
@@jeanetteverdun7014 It not about a perfect,I mean you must do everything heavy in your family

You can tell she’s such a good sister the way she takes care of mirabel. ❤
Actually, no. She's a victim and just because she got stronger through the abuse we shouldn't praise that. She shouldn't have to be like that, you know?
@@madeleine4943 She could be both at the same time. Life isn't a binary, you know.

Take care.
How are you now?
It's such a small detail but I love how they made Luisa physically strong AND feminine. They could have easily made her a brother. They could have gone the oh-so-hilarious trope and had her constantly be mistaken for a guy.
I like that too.
I too like that
Solid hip check to hammer the point home too
true.
Yes I like that they made her like that
Understanding her struggle through this song just makes her line in I think the ending song of the movie that much better.
