    #8. Besides the caffeine, Mountain Dew's flavor is quite different from 7UP too. While 7UP is Lemon-Lime, Mtn Dew is like Lemonade-Lime-Orange-cream-soda. I only say cream soda because there's a different mouth-feel than 7UP or Sprite, which are really crisp and light tasting citrus.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 5 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah, there's something heavy/filmy/foamy about Mountain Dew that's very different from the crisp texture of the usual lemon/lime sodas. The mouth-feel is more like root beer, although it doesn't have that foamy head that I associate with root beer, cream soda, or other soft drinks with that same beer-like mouth-feel.

      what i don't understand : when the problems come from those dyes, and those dyes add nothing to the taste, why are those dyes not simply skipped to have food that can be sold and consumed everywhere ? does food really need to be bright and colorfull (or bright white in the case of american "bread") to be able to sell it ?
      the problem also is not only that you can "relatively safely" consume one such item "in moderation", but that many different foods use the same chemical additives, and thus your total intake of them is the sum which no longer is "in moderation" ...

    Skittles . . . Sigh. Do not eat a big packet a day or more if you are an adult. Don’t encourage your children to eat candy every day either. Sugar is not good for them in such quantity. My parents didn’t provide candy in the house or money to buy it. They also insisted we not spoil our dinner. Yes we bought candy.
    Bread. Bread in America is made in huge batches, baked, and sent on trips over mountains, across flatlands and deserts etc. each town may or may not have a Bakery. If it does it provides that artisan bread that adults like including sourdough. American has been existing on bread made and sliced for sandwiches since Dad took his lunch to the factory, office, or skyscraper and the kids took theirs to lunch. After WWII mom was not in the house baking bread.
    Pork. Safe to eat now as pink as I learned to love in Germany.

    As I'm pretty sure I've mentioned in another earlier comment, it's a bit different in Australia. Although our food standards are amongst the highest in the world, we haven't completely banned some American snack foods. Some foods are made in accordance with our standards, we're probably not the only country that does that. I'm sure that's probably why you can buy your Skittles in Portugal. But others are imported. We know they're bad for us. They're just an occasional treat. But we like to make our American expats and tourists feel comfortable. Sometimes, a taste of home makes people feel less homesick. In general, we're warm, welcoming people who'll look out for our fellow human beings. If we can do something for somebody else, we will.

    Imagine a high quality cut of beef chopped fine so it’s tender, but not hamburger.
    Over the top put some capers, a few slices of shallot and/or garlic. finely, chopped lemon zest (just the yellow part).
    Toss in some oil and a light vinegar.
    Put an egg with a nice runny yolk and cover with pepper and fleur de sel.

      How old are you? You clearly are short of perspective. The US has been through much more trying times at regular intervals in the past. Just as an example, in the 1960s we had the assassinations of 3 important leaders, Kent State, riots in our cities and at the 1968 Democratic Convention, and we were at war with young people being conscripted. There is nothing happening now to threaten democracy in the US. Even if a certain ex-President were to seriously contemplate assuming extra-Constitutional powers, there's no chance the military or other sources of authority would acquiesce and follow unlawful orders.

Little Debbie has some great snacks, but I don’t eat them often, and I don’t like the Swiss Rolls anyway. Ewwww! Raw meat is not going into my mouth! I like my steak medium to medium rare-not that I can afford steak anyway. When you come to the states, visit the Coca Cola museum in Atlanta, Georgia. The bread crusade is terribly wrong and that's true no matter how much you've travelled in Europe. In "The Land of the Free", you are free to eat whatever kind of bread you want. If you choose you can get the mass produced, airy supermarket stuff and it is a staple at BBQ restaurants. But if you'd prefer, at least in San Francisco where I live, there are plenty of artisanal bakeries that make their bread with flour, salt and yeast and nothing else, just like in France or anywhere else and it's delicious. Also, you can get bread made with standard commercial yeast or with a sourdough "mother" that's many decades old. Whatever you want and want to pay for. If you think European bread is so great, try a loaf of fresh sourdough from Acme, Joseph Baker, Semifreddi or Tartine. That and some butter makes a great meal--I've done it.

    • @elkins4406
      @elkins4406 5 месяцев назад +1

      I think one of the important differences is that you pay a lot more for good quality bread here than you do for that very sugary, very soft, Wonder-bread- style white bread that we're sadly known for overseas. That sugary soft white bread is also the most widespread -- if you live in a rural area or a "food desert" in a big city, it may well be the only kind of bread that any supermarket convenient to you carries.
      It's not that we don't *have* good bread here. It's that the substandard stuff is both the most widespread *and* the most affordable, and in some living situations, the only type that you can access without going far out of your way. For many people in the US, it's just the generic bread, and that's just a pity.

    • @carolburnett190
      @carolburnett190 5 месяцев назад +1

      A very practical reason for American sliced bread is that we can’t necessarily just stroll down the street to a bakery. For rural folks, the grocery store may be an hour or more away and you need your bread to not mold and become an enormous crouton in just a couple of days. Europeans tend to shop almost daily so they don’t have to worry about that so much.

    • @BTinSF
      @BTinSF 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@carolburnett190 Bread freezes quite well, though, and some of us can just stroll down the street (or at least to a source within walking distance) and get a traditionally-made loaf as good as anything in France--city living has its advantages. I think the real problem is most Americans are raised on supermarket bread and don't really know what they are missing . . . plus the cost. A good baguette is 2 or 3 times the cost in France but I don't generally buy those. A shape known in Italy as ciabatta is usually my fave. It has some olive oil in it in addition to the usual flour, yeast and salt but mainly the shape is more to my liking.

      @@BTinSF I definitely know the difference in taste- I used to make bread at home a lot. And I enjoy the taste of artisan type breads, but I can’t spend 1/4 of my grocery budget to go the expensive grocery store in town to get bread. I grew up out in the countryside and we only went to town maybe once per week. My grandparents only went to the grocery store once per month. My comment was meant to explain that not everyone lives in a bigger city and doesn’t have the ability to obtain artisan breads.

    Rinsing chicken with chlorine is harmless and an extra safety step I want. In most places in the US, the drinking water is chlorinated and if you drink water out of the tap you are probably consuming more chlorine that you'll get from chicken, especially if you rinse it at home under the tap also before cooking. No matter what the French say, it's very difficult to slaughter and dismember chicken without some contamination from the common contents of the chicken's intestinal tract: salmonella. Obviously, cleanliness should be maximized but chlorine rinsing is a desirable second line of defense, just not a substitute.
    As for Canadians rejecting US meat, let's talk about Mad Cow Disease. The disease was first found in the UK and subsequently in Spain, France and elsewhere. There were 20 cases in Canada and then in a cow born in Canada and shipped to the US. There have been a total of 6 cases in the US compared to thousands in the UK. So if you are really worried about your health, certainly avoid British and other European and Canadian beef (which may not all actually be beef since a lot of horsemeat was discovered being sold as beef in the EU a few years ago).

    All this is hype. You would have to eat thousands of Skittles in one sitting to have a small effect. Also the chlorine brine has a small ratio of chlorine to water. Not enough to affect anyone eating a single serving.
    Over the years, with bad publicity, all these chemicals and additives have changed. Large corporations can and will do anything to correct bad publicity.
    How old was this video anyway?

    Just watch the videos from stealth filming of US meat product processing, from growing to slaughter & after.
    A couple of us in my family have been vegetarian/vegan for many years. I am old & 10 years ago, I just lost my taste for animal products (occassional cheese). Daughter-in-law went vegan as a young teen.

    You really should read labels and, more importantly, understand them. I understand you like junkfood. You completely miss the point. It's not about the food itself but the additives and unsanitary practices. Raw beef? Don't go to northern Europe. Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, etc., all have steak tartare, often spread on bread or eaten as a standalone dish. But you're Portugese and therefore not really considered European. And yes, most people think Trump is outrageously hilarious. Only Trump and followers don't think so.

    And don’t apologize…Trump IS hilarious. If you want more proof, look up “Trump funniest moments” and watch a few videos. Thats why people love him. He’s the first president to actually tell us the truth about how business is run behind closed doors, and doesn’t just give us a lot of words like “hope & change” but never tells us the details of how it’s going to be done. Then spends our tax dollars in ways that doesn’t help anyone in our own country.
