You are so lucky, Jo. Especially for having Asian parents lol. They usually want their kids to be doctors or something along those lines. I can't believe your parents not only encouraged you but SUGGESTED you apply for music school AND give RUclips a shot!! They saw your talents and your passion! I'm almost 30 and I"m still struggling to convince my parents to take music seriously-and I've been playing since I was 6 -_- ...I suppose I have to work smarter to show them I can be successful in music!
Vinicio Ordonez I've been playing since I was 11 almost 12 and to this day it's hard to convince my parents (particularly my dad) that I can be a successful musician. My main aspiration is to be able to teach and perform on the flute :)
I got accepted into music school and I am so excited! Even though I don't play flute, i've used your tips over the course of four years. Thanks for everything Joanna! Don't worry, I'll keep tuning in to your new videos!
Thank you so much for making this video! I helped a lot! I still have a couple years before I leave for college I I'm just going to wait and see what happens. Again, thank you!
The Flute Channel Thank you so much for your awesome input! This video definitely can't cover everything, but you've definitely contributed to this growing community amazingly well! Yes, I do agree that the Master's is not absolutely necessary, but for the purposes of this video, I had to cut that debate out. Great for you to bring that to light though! Thanks for your support! :D
Your experience sounds pretty similar to what I've been through. I didn't figure out I wanted to go to college for music until I was about 16, and it ended up being a scramble for me to start private lessons and to start practicing productively. Thankfully I got in to my top choice school for Music Ed. During those 5 undergrad years I had it in my head I was going to become a teacher after I was done, and that was it. One day during my third year, I was sitting in music history, listening to a Liszt etude, and something clicked and I changed my mind, and wanted to perform. I started thinking about becoming an orchestral musician, but I was torn because I was getting my music ed degree after all. I was sitting in another class, and by chance the professor basically validated my feeling and told the class "It doesn't matter what you get your Master's degree in, just DO one if you can." I then went on to start my auditions for Master's programs, and a previous teacher of mine (who is NOTORIOUS for being a million kinds of awful with any kind of correspondence) e-mailed ME out of the blue. He said he heard I was auditioning for Master's programs, and that the school he taught at had some money. So I ended up auditioning there, and getting in! Very much like it, it was a serious of fortunate chance events that have led me to where I am now.
I've just discovered your channel it's SOOO helpful. I'm going audition for music schools in January-February and I needed a sense of what I was getting into being a flute performance major thank you for that!!
I did the Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at UBC! And now I'm watching music youtube videos nonstop while procrastinating from practicing my violin. Things have come full circle.
What a great recap of some important experiences. But remember (and look forward to) that in the longer run after the nostalgia of college/university wears off and your musical activities originate more and more from your own sense of self-determination, persistent application towards productivity and progress of some kind, and your ability to envision appropriate end results to aim for (concerts, recordings, live performance options, special projects, having networked successfully in the industry so you keep close tabs on what's going on, developing your own music composition and projects and your own musical talent), that the world spins as you make it spin. University degrees in music mean essentially nothing in regards to career development, talent, character, and the musical voice within you. University music is the formal, technical basics of music theory, reading music and standard level musical performance that doesn't kick you into a real musical life, it leads you to the door and let's you wander off prepared to cover the basics, with a focus on a few specialties like an instrument, a music style, collaborations of some kind and some contacts in the industry. Still, the CORE of all of this is within yourself, your own sense of musical activity originating within yourself and what LIFE you give it to blossom in the world. Dream big, walk far, play well, network, build good friendships. All the things that don't exist on that piece of paper saying you got a degree in something. It's always about YOU, it's NEVER about the paper! It's about developing new options, more and more options, more diversity, some new resiliency and some bravery to assert your own talent and musical/character worth into working with others. To develop the ability to walk into musical situations and take on some responsibility to see them develop and get performed successfully. Joanna you are so right in noticing that university will change options and choices, and they just keep changing after university, for a lifetime. Use university to develop options and trigger self-determination, and experiences. Well worth it, but it has to be a proper match; person to type of school experience.
I'm very passionate about music. About 2 to 3 years ago (or maybe even 4 years ago. I can't remember), I wanted to become a music teacher. Now I'm thinking that teaching is not one of my strongest, but I may want to get it as a minor in college. I discovered that I play really well. When I actually played my sax on the radio, I was thinking, "Maybe this is what I'm meant to do. To play." But I'm just starting my senior and started playing the oboe about 4 months ago. My music teacher kind of wants me to get a scholarship for college playing. And I've discovered that playing the oboe to get a scholarship is pretty high. Plus, I've wanted to play oboe for years. I've very passionate about playing. I'm practicing even when I'm not practicing for anything. I'm already thinking of getting my solo piece for next May that I'm performing and work on it quite a bit because it is quite challenging.
I actually did the same thing as u did, just kept watching the youtube vids while afraid getting caught by my mom which terries me. And thanks again, thank you for making this video since i am applying the same thing. I did thought science is my passion but along with thousands concerts i did in the last half year i thought about music. I just fell in love with the last few sentence u said in ur video. Thank you Joanna and i hope i could be justanotherbassoonist lol
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! This is very helpful to me!! I am in my first year of IB and I am already feeling a lot of stress!!! I am planning to study music in my university and your video really gives me an insight of what it will be like! Thanks again for the video! :)
Even though I don't pay the flute, I love watching your videos. I am in uni for music but it's very general music (and it's BA, not BMus). Yeah I'm at the part of life where you said you went to the" next-door building to watch youtube videos".... I should probably go work on stuff now...
I feel like I’m in the same boat as you were now. I’m in grade 12 and was planning on doing a visual arts degree. It only recently hit me that my real passion was music. Now I am scrambling to learn all the theory and prepare my pieces in time:(
Hahah, I could add some tips on what not to do as well ;) I think you were probably at UBC at the same time as my BFF, Eileen Padgett. She would have been starting her masters in composition when you were finishing.
That happened to me too. My undergraduate professor says its to see how you actually are as a flutist and you can test the waters with her as a teacher and if on the day if the audition some disaster happens she knows that it was just nerves lol.
The same thing actually happened with me because when I was in my last year at Miami-Dade College I realized that Music Ed would not work for me. What changed my mind was when I sat in a New World Symphony dress rehearsal almost two years ago and they were rehearsing an all Tchaikovsky program. One of the pieces that they performed for that concert was the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and I said to myself "I want to play in Orchestra". Also, I did not realize that I wanted to be a musician until I was 16-17 years old (Around my Junior year of High School).
I just like you so so much!!! By the way, I only play a flute recorder which I learned way back in college. It's just so much fun and educational watching your videos. God bless!
Hi there! So, I've been researching schools in New York, and I'm wondering if you know any colleges well-suited for songwriters. I consider my strongest point musically is my voice, then songwriting, then guitar. I'm looking for schools in New York because I think my sound would fit-in better in NYC than here in Nashville. I DO NOT want to go to Belmont. I want to get out of my comfort zone and leave home. I love NYC, and I think I could adapt to life there quickly. However, I cannot convince my parents to let me move anywhere after I graduate unless I'm attending college somewhere else.
Thank you so much for making this video! It has helped me a lot since I am looking to be a Performance Major. I have some questions about flute auditions for college. (1) do you have to sight read a piece (2) how does the audition take place? (3) my parents don't want me to go to a music college at first. They want me to major in something else and then music. But my only interest is playing the flute. What should I do? Thanks! -Dylan
I think i want to do music, but I plan on starting as undecided. I just am not sure the reliability of a music career especially one that isn't a teaching career. I'm not sure how this will effect getting into the music school. I know this isn't really a question but can you help give me like an idea of how this may work out or tips. This video does help though, thank you.
Hey, I was just wondering b/c u said the bay area and in schools with u having to cram and are u from Florida like around Tampa b/c we have 5 in schools now and they bumbard u with HW so I was just wondering if u were from Florida Tampa bay area? It would mean the world if u were to respond
OMG hey ! This is totally weird because,i don't have anything to comment on,say,or request except that you say hey back (lmao)! I have no idea why I'll be so starstrucken over you replying to my comment,I guess it's just one of those human nature things!!!!!!!!:) I guarantee that It'll so randomly/weirdly make my day when I read it,XD!!Omg I talk so much!!
Thanks for your video. I was sort of nervous to watch it to be honest. I was afraid I was going to hear(If you haven't been playing seriously since birth then you're not getting in) It's relieving to hear your honest story. I'm a classical guitarist but I feel like your videos are really helpful. Thanks again.
Ironic :P I am supposed to be writing a paper for Japanese History and Culture but here I am watching youtube videos in the computer lab next to the library :P
funny as you say don't procrastrinate I'm watching this whilst not practicing for my recital. Better get to work
😂😂😂

I did the Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at UBC! And now I'm watching music youtube videos nonstop while procrastinating from practicing my violin. Things have come full circle.
I am going to pursue musical theatre as a pit orchestra player.
I love watching your videos. It's like looking in a slightly more talkative mirror!

Thumbs up Joanna! I'm on the same page as you. I didn't even consider until my grade 12 year.
I love this new video and I really look up to you as a flutist!
I am in IB right now, I live in Ontario. I do RCM piano right now, your video about RCM history and harmony exams helped a lot. :)

Different ways to say it, but the majority says flutist
Pz mail mi
omg ib.....😅😭😰😪
Lmao 😂I love this video
You’re parents totally did like 85% 💀💀💀💀
Kudos tho
Another tip...a lot of my music teachers say that you should never pay out-of-pocket for a music degree. Get scholarships and such
Instead of an advanced degree. How about having talent?
If I’m 18 it’s to late to start preparing for music conservatories or gymnasium?🥲
if you want to do solo vocalist. like rockstar....should you go to a music school?
