The out of focus quality and effect depends not entirely on f stop number, but focal length, subject distance and sensor / film size.
Yeah, no wonder she admits that it took her a lot to understand what bokeh is... she still doesn't. Like, actually her canon 50mm f1.2 is faster than the fujinon 50mm f1 because of the sensor difference on fuji cameras. You know... It's actually a 75mm f1.5. She gets more bokeh because it's actually a 75mm
@@geanny1998 I cannot agree in totality. A 1.0 lens is still faster than a 1.2 lens notwithstanding the sensor size it covers. At the end of the day, "faster" means you can use a faster shutter speed in a given lighting condition to get a comparable results (particularly whether you can freeze a motion or not).
@@geanny1998 Scott Kelby said something similar and he was wrong. The lens is 50mm, the aperture is F1. But the sensor is smaller (think crop mode on full frame). This means to get the same framing you have to back up, changing the geometry. Lens optics are unchanged.
Should mention this 50mm f1.0 on an APSC crop. Its an equivalent of 75mm F1.4 on fullframe camera to keep it in terms of perspective. Any comparisons should be done really like for like.
True. Although the F1.4 only applies to the depth of field and not the light let in.
75 mm F1.4 if it was a 50 F0.95 ...A F1 is more a 1.5 ;-)
@@albardit not really, fullframe 35mm sensor get same amount of light at F1.5
In terms of T stops it’s the same no matter the sensor size, in terms of DOF yes that’s also different on a crop, but the level of out of focus is the same, so the level of blur is the same, but the focal plane changes.
@@manphoto1972 x-t4 has a 1,53 crop factor... so this lens is 76.5mm and f1,53 actually :))
Bokeh being described as soft and creamy makes me want dessert. 😆
An excellent demo of this lens because you didn't ONLY shoot at f/1 which is not always practical. Great comparisons over the f/1 to f/4 range which virtually no other review did.
Some terrific portraits shown.
F1 looks like a green screen 😳
Yeah
I couldn’t put my finger on it, but that’s it. 1.4 seems like a good spot.
Flat Af right???
Bokeh is actually Toneh. Like if you know that reference 😉
No one cares
😉
@@hanktrinker903 you're trash
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well.
Can't wait until camara conspiracy try it
food for thought: the 56mm 1.2 Fuji has shallower DOF than the 50 1.0 used at same distance.
At the same distance, yes, but not for the same subject size in the image: howmuchblur.dekoning.nl/#compare-1x-50mm-f1-and-1x-56mm-f1.2-on-a-0.9m-wide-subject (although the difference is small).
Exactly! The “equivalent” for the Fuji is 1.5 although its light gathering is F1.0. Still photos I’ve seen on some other reviews of this lens were simply out of focus. Why? Who knows? It could be selection of the wrong focus point, the body & lens not being calibrated or any of another factors. This is such a specialized lens I question how many Fuji will sell or how many people who do will actually shoot wide open on a regular basis.
I wonder if this was just a look what we can do lens rather than updating the 56mm F1.2 which would have been my preference.
Richard Briscoe they will sell dude to GAS, people thinking 1.0 vs 1.2 is a major difference, you tube GASing people up, etc.
james jackson We’ll soon see. I have little doubt that the first production run will sell out. The question is how well it sells thereafter and how many of those people actually shoot it wide open.
I still would have preferred a 56 MK II.
@@Thmz9 Just a small correction in your chart that doesn't impact your point, but you forgot to add the 1.5x crop factor for Fuji APS-c.
Fuji did it again! Can't wait to see some video shot with this lens.
taylor can review a rock and I’ll still watch the whole thing
Great video! The appeal of the aperture ring is real.
Your 85 F1.2 on a full-frame has a shallower depth of field than this F1.0 on an APC
What Are You On About this lens is equal to 75 f/1.6 on FF. No aps-c lens has 1.2 equiv
@What Are You On About I'm a fuji guy & I agree. Just go full frame & get a 1.2 for way cheaper. Fuji lenses are way over priced for what they are.
What Are You On About i dont understand basic? The new lens IS FF equiv of 75 1.6 and currently there is no OEM APS-C lens that is FF 1.2 equivalent. Your 56 is 85 1.8ish in FF land.
No need for insults.
The DOF on fullframe is shallower on F1.4 as this Fuji lens on F1.0.
@@NildoScoop You know the only people who care for these numbers are actual photographers. When has a client ever refused to work with you because you can only go to 1.8 ?
The color grade is 🔥
Someone needs to make an ASMR video about the mechanical sounds of the aperture ring
This lens is absolutely beautiful. I wouldn't necessarily use it for more wider shots as for me it looks like the subject was photoshopped in. I think its more appealing for close portraiture ( anything waist up). But agree that at the price point its totally worth it and the overall quality it gives for the image is on point. I hope to rent this lens out and test it for myself! Love your work Moment!
Thank you for providing the best example images I’ve seen yet of this lens. Really hammered the point home. What a gorgeous lens
I find wierd that you compare 50mm lenses from diferent sensor sizes, you should seek an equivalent.
If youre strictly talking about depth of field, it stays the same no matter the sensor size. APS-C is just more cropped in
@@s0nglyr1cs but the fact is if you want to maintain the same composition you're gonna have to compare to 35mm equivalents. of course there aren't many, but might still help to compare to some 85mm lenses. the samyang 75mm 1.8 for Sony is also one that adds up to 50mm on apsc
@@elliotw.888 yeah but 50mm/1.0 on aps-c, when you factor in field of view and depth of field is closer to 75mm/1.2 on 35mm format. Canon's DSLR 85mm/1.2 still costs $2000, and their mirrorless 85mm/1.2 lens is a $3000 purchase. And when it comes to light-gathering capability, f1.0 is f1.0 regardless of sensor size.
@@s0nglyr1cs That's not true. Have a Full Frame (z6) as well as an aps-c (a6000) and several lenses for them. And the f 2.8 g has roughly the same bokeh as the f4 z. It also has the same Size and weight. The only advantage is the Light. So more depth of field with the smaller sensor at wide f stops. In the end it's just physics and physics can be measured by math but not changed by sensor size. The crop factor of 1.5 or 1.6 in Canon aps-c also aplies on the f stop number, so my Sigma 30 1.4 is a 45 2.1 on full frame. And again, the sigma is as compact as the helios f2 (not quite eqivalent but close enough). Now there is also a difference when you compare the quality. F stop alone does not make the lens that much bigger but to elimenate the problems coming with a wide aperture you need a lot of glass to counteract those problems (ca, flares and all that stuff). That's the reason why the noct is so massive compared to the noctilux or why the Olympus lenses are bigger than the ones from panasonic eben with the same f stop and focal lenght. Theredore I don't like it when people say that a 1.2 on aaps-cor mft has more bokeh than a 1.4 on full frame. Fun fact: right now we have no lenses for medium format that can produce more bokeh than full frame or even some mft lenses. At least as far as i know. Hope I could bring some light in this topic. The fuji lens sure looks interesting though. 75mm 1.5 Sure is a look to have. Oh and one Last thing as a fun fact: the o and e in bokeh are spoken very short and the e is almost silent.
Greetings from Germany👋
@@AJ-em2rb the depth of field is equivalent to 75mm f/1.5 on full frame format!
So a comparison to a EF 85mm f/1.4 L IS USM would be reasonable.
Plus the auto focus, CAF and WR sounds great... want this for my XH1 💪🏽💯
Great stuff. I LOVE the fact that you all are working with, and selling Fujifilm stuff now. It's like 2 of my favorite brands having a party together. 😂😂
That's so true 😂
Yes but do know that the bokeh blur effect is f/1.5 compared to full frame. The Aperture light intake is still f/1.0 even though it's smaller Aps-c.
I think the same this is not the bokeh master and if you have to use manual good luck !
Once again- crop factor has no effect on bokeh. Say it with me now!
@@TedTalksTech You mean, more correctly, it has an effect on "perceived" depth of field, right?
astudios No.. If you have a Sony E mount 1.8 lens and you shoot with that same lens on a crop sensor and full frame, the bokeh pervieced or otherwise will be the same. The bokeh will only be different if you try to match the field of view on the crop sensor with that of a full frame camera.
@Ted Talks technically it does, it affects the field of view so if you're shooting with apsc sensors, you must step back a little to match full frame's equivalent.
May I ask what you’re using to record video from behind the camera?
So many misconceptions... around that “bokeh” and aperture. It should be seen as an artistic tool
Toneh Northrup wants to know your location
can you explain this to me
@@gabrielhunter8986 Well, there's a person called Tony Northrup here on RUclips who's "infamous" for often going crazy on the bokeh in his videos. Long lenses with big aperture that totally blurs out the entire background. One video was kinda funny where he went to a lake but you couldn't even tell because it was so blurry from being out of focus.
The word Toneh is coined by Kasey (from the channel Camera Conspiraces) which I guess is just another word for bokeh but mixed with Tony (Tony + Bokeh = Toneh)
@@CarlBergsdorf Wow thanks for the detailed explanation. I actually watch his videos sometimes but I haven't heard about the Toneh thing
u mean camera conspiracies
for a fair comparison, you should in the first place consider the f factor in crop sensor is different with full frame sensor.
You rock :)
There's another ridiculously fast lens, the f/.95 Mitakon Speedmaster for Canon EF that actually works on full frame DSLRs. Not especially high quality imo, but a tank of a thing and covers full frame.
are there any adapters to make it work on canon EF?
Love your videos. This one was just perfect. I too love the sound of that aperture ring turning but in my fuji 50mm f2
😂 The clicking is the best! It’s why I bought my XT-2. I learned on an analog Olympus and I hate scrolling through digital menus to get my shots set up!
Omg such a beautiful lens😭 I want it now!
How fast does this lens focus? Does it vignette at all? How does it compare to the 56mm 1.2?
I find the 50 1.0 has more cat eye like Toneh than the 56 1.2.
Much more. Very biased/emotional review. :/
Once you stop down to 1.2 the cats eye goes away though…
Holy...this is a magical lens 😳
The perfect lens to annihilate backgrounds, beautiful
a more perfecter lens would be an 85mm 1.2.
Any 85mm 1.4 will do the trick
Well if you want to keep this focal length this is pretty much the only option
@@MattiaMirabello that's not what your comment above says. I'm not denying it's an awesome lens and an f/1.0 lens with autofocus is just amazing. Still there are better lenses to blur the background. Heck, even with a 300mm lens at f/11 i can annihilate the background if it's far away enough
@@blenderdad you are talking about 300mm at f/11. If you want to annihilate a background at 50mm this is the perfect option.
Many thanks. Great review. What about low light portraits or night street photo at f1.0?
May I ask what camera and lens was used for the in-office segments?
The amount of incompetence in this video is almost mind blowing...
Cool bokeh f-stop comparison!!
That green fridge in the background looks so dope 😍😍😍😍 would love to buy one of those if I manage to find one. Great video. Love the pictures that came out of the camera with that bokehlacious lens ❤️❤️
it is a SMEG
What film simulation did you use here?
That lens will be epic and a game changer, though with good composition, I find I like having a little more depth of field making the overall photo much more interesting. I tend to buy wide aperture lenses for their light gathering vs just a bokeh monster. Great video!
How would it do with video? And the sound may not be good for video
Are EF-M lenses supported on Canon EOS 90D?
No, EF-M lenses are made for Canon's mirrorless APS-C cameras. EF-S lenses are supported on the 90D.
You are super pleasent to watch. One of my favorite portraits was taken with a 50mm 1.1 on a full frame
Thank you for taking the time to peovide an honest review. This lens is definitely on my manifestation list... 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Is it better than 56 1.2?
Nice vid. You can get amazing bokeh with other FUJI lenses such as the XF 16 to 80mm f 4.0 OIS WR and the XF 55 to 200mm OIS. Don't let the numbers fool you, although they won't in this 50mm f 1.0 case.
With 16-55 and 16-80 you can't. I don't like their nervous bokeh. Only 55-200 on the long end can keep up but 200 mm is useless for portraits with model.
It going to look very good on the X-H1 & 2 the size should be a perfect fit.
As an Asian, it annoys me that people pronounce the word "bokeh" all over the place. Let's just stick with a better word "toneh"
Jokes aside, this seems like a beautiful lens (thk u fuji!) I feel my gear acquisition syndrome already. However, I am little puzzled. I know hype is really but the size, weight and the price of the lens is not so attractive during corvid economic situation.
Also I wish the motor was linear for hydrid shooters. Once again, It's a beautiful lens but I will stick with my 16-55 for video and 56 that I bought on a second hand market for $600.
bokeh
It ends up being a f/1.5 equivalent so wouldn't the Sony and Canon f/1.4s or 1.2s actually out perform this (for a lower price too)?
jes. But a 1.2 the canon is very very soft
Florian Grätz that’s right. Forgot about that. I don’t have any Canon gear so I’ve never used the 1.2 before.
@@raiqulikesyou Me too
Outperform in what? At fuji F1 you will have a faster shutter speed then on Canon 1.4 or even 1.2.
okay so this is FIRE. this is a dope vid
I like the clarity of your explanations.
My gawd.. That dreamy bokehlicious background
What do you think of this thing? Does it deserve "the bokeh master" title?
Maybe? It's an aps-c lens so you lose some depth of field vs a full frame. It would be cool to do a side by side with the canon 85mm 1.2 to see if the full frame makes up for slightly slower aperture.
Oooo also throw in the canon 0.95 dream lens on a film camera
Not even close to the Kodak Aero Ektar 178mm 2.5 on a 4x5 camera. Thats the most extreme Bokeh you can get for sure.
Fujifilm don't appear to use this title in their press release or promo video.
Will this lens fit in fuji x-a5.???
Hey, thanks for the video. i would say it feels there s a loss of definition when hitting f1 (which happened some times), it's less crispy or maybe it's just the depth of field ? what do you think ?
Price?
Does Taylor teach a photography class??
What is the filter size because I definitely will need a ND filter on that bad boi
Just checked out the site it’s a 72mm just in case anyone is wondering. I also see that it has WR attached to its name, so does that mean it’s Weather resistant?? If so I’ll sell my 56mm so fast there be flames coming off my camera
It's 77mm
My manual focus mitakon opens up to 0.95 😌 but that’s a 35mm so the compression ain’t there
This lens is tempting.
yes but with the mitakon its a more useable focal length indoors!!
Bokeh is cool, especially if you wanna hide an ugly background or just completely isolate the subject from the background to give more emphasis, but the most important when you are doing portraits is the context of the whole image. So far the best shots were the F2.8 in most of the examples you showed and F4 looks awesome as well. F1 on your shots looks really nice when the background is very close to the subject, so you actually see the advantage of such a great aperture. Nice video tho.
Absolutely agree with this.
This lens reminds me of film lenses 😍
I feel like every f/4 image was better
it's all about the background story and what you want to convey. using an extreme shallow DOF is just a poor photographer technique
I agree with you both!
Nice video! I just noticed that you weren't using the lens hood and being that the front element is not recessed a lot, the lens is prone to flare. I might suggest testing it again with the lens hood. You will get more contrast as well.
And why keep the hood inverted on your lens, please throw it out!
Nice presentation.
I dream of the day when Fuji releases a f2.8 70-200mm (105-300mm equivalent). This is the only real hole in their lens lineup. I need the ~200-300mm range when shooting on the field. Please Fuji !!!
I agree. Though, I have been using my Canon 70-200 with the Fringer adapter and it is working surprisingly well. Still, a lens from Fuji of this length would be fantastic.
Beautiful review 👍🏼
Does it have AF?
Would love to see this versus the full frame RF 50 1.2
if the objective is most blurred background, the 50 1.2 on ff will be more blurry
Dreamer Music's Stuff especially if you frame them the same.
@@MafiaFLairBeatz incorrect. This lens will give you the equivalent look of a 75mm f1.5 on full frame, which will give you more “bokeh” than a 50 f1.2 due to compression.
Good review and nice pics. I like that Fuji still make lenses with a dedicated aperture ring.
In terms of blur power, It’s the equivalent of about f1.4 on full frame.
More like f1.5 but it’s 75mm f1.5 in ff, so it’s still quite creamy 😄
Depth of field and bokeh is the exact same. It's just that you have to move closer on full frame to get equivalent field of view
That is because you have to step away to match the FoV.
f/1.0 is f/1.0 regardless of camera body.
Shoot a flower from three feet away with a 50 f/1 Fuji and FF and you will get the same bokeh of you don't move positions. The only difference is that the Fuji sensor crops 1.5 of the sensor edges making the final image tighter.
It's when you step away from the flower to match the FF framing is when you get that f1.4-ish bokeh... Physics, Optics and Scale people
Art is Life I meant compared to an equivalent focal length in FF such as 75mm or whatever the equivalent focal length is.
@@Seanonyoutube again, there is no difference in DoF if used on a FF or Crop shot from the same distance to subject. The only thing different id the Field of View because of the cropping of the sensor/image which means you have to back up a few feet with a crop body with that same lens to match the composition, and THAT is where people get confused because they think its the lens not having the same compression where in actuality it's the camera to subject distance that tricks you.
I suggest if you have a way to attach a single lens to both a crop body and a FF body and shoot a subject with both without changing positions, you will see absolutely NO difference in compression. Only one shot the subject will be tighter than the other due to cropping in via the sensor size.
So saying the aperture is different from camera to camera is totally false. Instead we need to say it is the FoV that is different, thus adjusting subject distance is what is confusing people. Apertures are a constant.
Hm wonder what could this be worth if you already own the 56 1.2?
And if you love shallow dof, the 56mm is shallower at the same distance from subject.
Lens looks amazing. But your edits are also beautiful. A preset of yours? Can I buy that somewhere?🤔
Will it fit the fugifilm x t30
Will we see a video on the Fuji GW that we see in the background?
I am interested to see how this lens autofocus performs in video 🤔😄
Wow it looks amazing 😍
Us Olympus OM users who’ve grown up with aperture dials on Zuiko lenses all know about that sweet clicky sound :) Any camera with an aperture dial on the body just feels weird now
Kept waiting to see if she was exaggerating...she was not. Geez this look beautiful!!!!
I have a xt30, and i wish to buy the viltrox 85mm f1.8, and seeing this video, it's blow my mind, this lens is amazing, I realy want this lens.
I've got the 56mm f/1.2 and even that f-stop is already (too) much for bokeh. I'm afraid that at f/1.0 the bokeh balls will become too distracting.
I'm in 2 minds whether its a good thing to shoot portraits at F1? the side by side comparison you could see the eye and hand where out of focus (from what I could see). Maybe 1.8 or f2 is better
Hey there.. I'm the guy who wants the Fuji XS10 from the other video.
How about a video with the XS10 and this lens?
IBIS and a 1.0.. wow.
Great stuff guys!
Hows the chromatic abberation? I see a lot of greens and purples on the fringes
I like the video before i seen it, know it will be good. Dont care about Fujifilm but know it will be good. Watching when I get home:$
Can't decide, upgrade to a fujifilm xt4 or a sony a7iii....
Depends on what you're doing. If you're wildlife and sports go sony. Fuji system is way to small right now. If you're shooting anything else that those then go fuji. I'm in the fuji system.
From someone who switched from Fuji after 6 years, go full frame and don't look back. That said, wildlife on a crop sensor is pretty nice because you get the 1.5x crop.
@@Chazyfizzlez the crop factor is nice but the lack of glass really is a downer at the moment. They came out with an exotic prime and weren't happy with the sales. Now they're hesitant to make another telephoto prime.

“the more bokeh” but bokeh is the quality of the blur not the amount correct?
Tim VanBenschoten when people say that they just mean the difference between out of focus and in focus portions of the image are more significant.
Were the comparison shots edited differently or is f/1 really that low-contrast compared to stopping down? I like the look personally, but it is quite noticeable.
This is a 75mm 1.5 equivalent. Kinda weird. So the canon 50 1.2 is shallower relatively but the Fuji compression might make up for it. Definitely cannot beat the canon 85 1.2 lens.
Chill. If fuji went full frame they definitely can beat that lens easily
bobby agront first of all don’t tell me to chill! Second of all this is not a competition between companies. The point is simple in the video you get the impression this lens will have more light than a 1.2 it will not. Also the 75 mm is very awkward at best. Portraits at 70 mm suck. Ok Fanboy. I have plenty of Fuji glass which are amazing lenses at good price. I. An tell you right now nobody in the market is making lenses like the Canon Rf mirrorless lineup they are the most superior and most expensive however.
@@sols9449 this 50 is an f1 and will let in more light than an f1.2 of any format. Meaning you can use a lower ISO when shooting at the same shutter speed to get the same exposure.
i just change from shooting fuji for 7 years to now sony a6400 (because i wanted to do video and can't afford the x-t4 for the flip screen.) and i must say.... i really miss the aperture dial on my fuji lens T_T

You will get ‘more’ toneh using the 50mm 1.2 on the full frame canon compared to the Fuji’s crop sensor. Lovely looking lens still, Fuji producing some great gear at the moment...love my new xt4.
Fuji will focus 15cm closer than 85mm F1.2 Canon RF and Canon is 1200 G compared to 845 G. Also 2799 USD vs 1299 USD. So FUJI WINS
This would do great on the gfx 100. Medium format with f 1.0 would look like butter...
You might need a wheel-barrow to trundle the lens about with, though!
You need to try a vintage lens! Thrust me😋

@@moment Hej! I saw that video. Like it, but...I meant that you should tri vintage lens on yours Fuji camera. Lot's of fun waits if you like the aperture ring 🤣
The FujiFilm f/1.0 lens is basically a full frame f/1.2 lens. I'm glad they did it, but it's not any better than the Canon f/1.2, except that it's not really a 50mm frame size. It's a 75mm f/1.2 lens, which may make it better for portrait work than the Canon. It's tactile, not tactical. Photography isn't war. lol
a F1.5 in fact
And also half the price of the Cannon RF 85f1.2 version, the Fuji is also a bit lighter
