  • Spade lug wheels, strakes, step wheels, iron lugs or spuds. Whatever you call them they have been aiding traction on farm tractors for decades. With the advent of steel and rubber track crawlers and improved rubber radial tyres they have become a distant memory for most. Not at Dutch family farm Enthoven in Zeewolde, Flevoland. They created a modern version of the spade lug wheels for their 270 horsepower New Holland T7.270. On this heavy clay soil the tractor is getting more than adequate grip to pull a new seven furrow Lemken Juwel 10 on land/in furrow plough. The wheel slip is at an amazing 0 to 1%! This not only results in more traction but also less fuel use. It also helps the tractor to stay on top when it is slippery. The spuds or lugs can be adjusted by simply changing the pins to give different gripping depths. This system has been in use for five years without any issues to the tractor or implements.
    After the recently lifted sugar beet land has been ploughed it is immediately drilled with winter wheat by the farms second tractor. A New Holland T7.225 with an Kverneland Accord fronttank and drill hooked up to a Lely Roterra power harrow. You might notice the 'chimneys' in the background. These are windmills under construction.
    What do you think of this system? How do you get grip when ploughing or don't you plough at all on your farm?

    Dad had to use spade lugs during the war because of rubber shortage, remember we put them back to cut corn in the late 1950 's a very wet season. He had made wood block with old tyres nailed to go between the lugs to go on the road. When you do get stuck they really dig a hole quickly.

    • @Agrifotodotnl
      @Agrifotodotnl  2 года назад +3

      After harvesting the soil is quite compacted in the top layer, ploughing loosens it. We get a lot of rain during winter time so that can quickly get away if the field is ploughed. Also the loose soil dries up more quickly in the spring which is better for the crop growth.

    Here in El Ejido, Spain, the kind of agricultura we have is somewhat different. We have so many greenhouses you can see them from space, just like white plastic sea, with the difference that most of it gets to be recycled, not because people care that much, because it's too much to be thrown away, and you can get fined. Also, the level of production and quality is on another level, we as a city are the most requested producers of all the EU when it comes to producst produced in greenhouses; peppers, cucumbers, watermelon... And it's quite unusual to see those kind of tractors, because they are not needed for anything. Seeding? By hand with small pallets with the plant and a little square of soil. Planting? You poke a hole on the groukd with a metal rod and get the plant in. Fertilizing? You buy fertilizers and get then in the water tanks, so when you turn on the irrigation sisten that is running across all the greenhouse with hoses, the plants receive the nutrients and all they need, trying not to harm the soil. And now, collecting? Everything is fine until we get the watermelons in summer. Imagine the average is 5 to 7€ an hour of work, with peons working for between 800 to 1200€ a month. Well, when you have to cut and pick up watermelons, you've got two people, one cutting and turning and other to pick them up, 10kg average. It's around 200€ per day, and if you are working with someone that have maybe 5ha or more of watermelons, or someone specialized in them, that can get up to earning close to 5.000€ in one month, a forth of the average wage per year, but in one month, and take into account how much money is the owner making in order to pay those salaries. The only open-air crop we ever plant is grass, but because a neinghbour have goats and borrows part of our land to plant there so they can come and eat, and that's one of the few times I've seen tractors like that.
