We wonder if you have ever asked the Lord the same question Sidney Gilbert asked? This week in Come, Follow Me we will be studying section 51-57 of the Doctrine and Covenants. This is a section focused on the building up of Kirtland, Ohio. This section was given to the Saints of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in an effort to help them invest in the place where they were.

D&C 51:16-17,19
I had a revelatory experience with these verses that blessed me with insight on the importance of an eternal perspective and waiting upon the Lord when we are in places of uncertainty. I had an unexpected change of belief in my husband and he was very antagonistic and unsupportive to my Faith in the Gospel. I was unsure how to proceed. Will this work? Do I stay? How am I to handle this? I prayed and went right to this scripture. The Spirit had me understand that sometimes we find ourselves in uncertain places, and sometimes the Lord desires us to “wait in that place” for a little season-to wait upon Him, until He directs us by personal revelation otherwise. We are to act in this place of waiting “as for years” in Faith and continued obedience to covenants. If we do this it will “turn unto us for good” and with our patience and trust in the Lord, we will “enter into the joy of the Lord and inherit eternal life” in His due timetable. Sometimes the answer is to remain in a place of uncertainty, trust the Lord, wait upon Him until the time He “provides for us otherwise” to act or move in a certain direction...and actually, what I’ve discovered is that The Lord provides for us all along in this uncertain place-He provides grace, strength, kindness, love, nourishment....as what we have “planted” 🌱 in that place causes us to grow spiritually through Him.
16 And I consecrate unto them this land for a little season, until I, the Lord, shall provide for them otherwise, and command them to go hence;
17 And the hour and the day is not given unto them, wherefore let them act upon this land as for years, and this shall turn unto them for their good.
19 And whoso is found a faithful, a just, and a wise steward shall enter into the joy of his Lord, and shall inherit eternal life.
It’s worthy for the waiting. Our part is continue to love our husband and keep the Lord’s commandments.
When I was a BYU-Hawaii student in 1989, I came to know a couple missionaries who served in PCC. They were very kind to me and my family and always set great examples for us. Later we learned that the sister had been waiting 30 years for her nonmember husband to become a church member. He did join the church after 30 years. Not just that, he became a Bishop and even served a mission together.
Today I also learned that ‘we don’t discover Zion, we often have to build Zion.’ So let’s build Zion wherever we are and that includes our home.
I was in that boat of waiting for my husband. Many many years! It is such a glorious feeling when he did find the nourishment of the gospel. I just kept thinking for years “lead by example” and he will come around. Patience and staying prayerful is the key!
My wife and I listen to the podcast while we are driving to work then we talk about what David and Emily said about this or that and how the Spirit taught us something we hadn’t known before. So we thank you so much for your efforts to teach the gospel. The time and money that you and your families sacrifice so that an old couple living in Oklahoma can have a place to go to learn and grow. Thank you.
Thanks for another great lesson. I know it’s a dangerous thing to imagine people are what they seem to be behind the media facade, but I believe the two of you are who you are because you have PRACTICED the religion and you continue to practice it daily when you have reached a level beyond mastery. I’m not in the habit of idolizing anyone, but I truly admire the two of you.
I have a great quote displayed in my home that goes along with the idea of planting even for a little season:

I have felt for six years after moving to a new place, that I didn't belong, that I wasn't accepted into the ward, that I didn't agree with the culture or the politics of this place, that this was just going to be a temporary place until I could go somewhere where I would feel comfortable. I had a truly spiritual experience as you two talked today about the Kirtland Saints. I love it there and felt the spirit so strongly when I visited. I realize that I have to put down my roots, so that the Lord's blessings can rain down upon me and help me to know how to help instead of how to separate myself. Thank you so much. This has been your best episode yet, for me.

I got to visit there and the Kirtland temple, 2 years ago. It so cool to see everything and feel the spirit and know thier sacrifices ❤
This gives me a new view of I am a child of God - lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way, teach me all that I must do to [serve and love and do the work] so we can live with Thee again

I felt like, during the season of the pandemic, if I gave my all, I felt less stress, I felt much more fulfilled. I didn't long for a past, nor for a future when we would all be back. I just settled into the season and allowed the Lord to do His work.
I’m sorry but the pandemic is still all around the world. But I agree this is a time to grow spiratuelly.

The Saints being told to take care of Kirtland and make it an abundant place reminds me of how Jesus leaves each area He visits clean and with fire wood for whoever follows Him in The Chosen. His apostles were surprised by so many things that He did.

This was such a great lesson. Especially about being planted. I keep wanting my living situation to change (since 2014) and I haven’t given it chance to see if this is where I’m meant to be. I’m grateful for the spiritual manifestation that I got from this lesson.

So neat to see you standing there and it raining cats and dogs. We were there this time ofyear 3 years ago and it was pouring down and the water wheel was moving very well. And this is the sawmill that Newell K Whitney turned over to Joseph Smith to use the proceeds to build the Kirtland Temple. This stuff is really real. It is all true. And it will never change.

29:52 talking about false expectations really hit me. I've been watching The Chosen season 1 with my family and I feel the reason so many people were unable to recognize the Savior was because of false expectations and it makes me think about what false expectations I have in my life and what they're keeping me from seeing and enjoying. I love your show so much. Please keep doing it!
When I learned of your field trips, I thought they would be like virtual tours such as the missionaries were doing in 2020. This is more like a teaser to go visit myself rather than live through the experience through you.

I had an elderly early-morning seminary teacher, and bless her heart, she was there every day. But she always called it KIRKLAND. Even wrote it on the board that way. Pretty sure most of the class was asleep, but still, it was hard to overlook.
I had the opportunity to visit the Kirtland temple a couple of years ago. Definitely a special place.

As I learn about the Prophet and the saints back then, I know they had to be the strongest of the strong. I would have been a complainer of things! That tells me again and reaffirms the knowledge that I do have is so true!

We moved to the Utah west desert. No one said it would be so hard. Think severe wind tunnel (NW & SE),
Sand in everything including up your nose, in your mouth & throughout your house. Its either super hot or frigid cold in winter. We started on an undeveloped lot with no infrastructure. The gardens & trees are nearly impossible to grow. Future water is uncertain. This section of the D&C that you highlighted about being planted for a short season makes sense. How do you hear Him as to why its so hard, and what your purpose is?
All I can see is the negative, frustrating part of the experience. Any replies will be deeply appreciated.

Kirkland WA is where the original Costco opened, hence the Kirkland brand. My husband is from there. It is confusing.

Okay...totally not important... also, @David: I was introduced to Kirkland Signature/CostCo while I was on my mission--I hadn't heard of it before that. And *loved* the brand. And I *totally* made the same Kirtland-Kirkland connection, all the time. I get you. LOL!
Kirkland is the town where the Costco flagship store is. We, here in Washington state, get Kirkland and Kirtland switched.

Great point! It is a complete miracle and it’s so sad that most of my siblings 7 out of 9 (who are active in the church) don’t see that and have said they are never getting vaccinated. I get my second shot today....that makes all six of us a fully vaccinated family!
