Not really. Our government generally does whatever it wants, slightly changes direction every 4 years, and ends up looking like a global embarrassment. Our influence is diminishing, we have slow, petty politics influenced by money, and the "corrupt" and "troubled" Chinese "regime" is laughing as they surpass us. Voting won't change that.

Thank you, Katie, for your admittance of worry about all that is going on. I share that with you. I am an American born, originally conservative woman who has not been able to lean into the GOP for more than a decade now. And I am losing sleep at night with all that is going in the our listing politically ship (to include the Supreme Court). This conversation with Mr. Sykes was really valuable for those of us who feel like we are alone living outside the Cult of Trump.

Totally agree. But not much we can do. If electing a President was based just on popular vote...Trump would not have a chance. But under our Electoral College System -- he actually has a good chance of winning -- Unfortunately.
Biden was ok as a 1st term President. But he is now WAY, WAY to old and sometimes does look like he is not together and in need of a Nap. He will lose much support I believe because of his age issue. That and the fact that many are not happy about the fact that Kamala Harris could become President should Biden not make it through a 2nd term.

I am hopeful because of the results of the midterms where voters rejected extremism and trump lost by at least 7 million votes in 2020. I don’t see how trump can do better with multiple indictments.

Joe Biden admitted, even bragged about his pay to play deal with Ukraine. Finally if one of Trumps kids did what Hunter Biden has done you would all be losing your minds ( as you should). What’s so sad about what’s happening is no one is communicating. Just name calling each other. Our medía is the primary reason this “cult” exist. Ask some real questions. Why are there so many supporters in the Republican Party, we are all Americans. We should be able to ask these questions without ame calling, without judgement of our fellow neighbors. As someone who doesn't answer polls, I'm curious if anyone has looked into what demographic, is, answering polls, and how that skews poll data.
Exactly. Many people only have cell phones and never answer the call unless they recognize the number.
That's a large chunk of the population not being polled.
People with landlines. Also, there's a ton of polls/surveys on the computer for these people to find.

He managed to get 5 nobel peace nominations for helping Eastern Country come to peace deals that had never been done before and which Obama and Bush advised Trump not to even try and telling him it was a waste of time. Trump brought industry back from Mexico and China, He stopped crimes at the borders of drugs, murder, sex trade by 97 percent. Crime was down all over the US during Trump years because people were busy working in jobs that were now available to them and just the fact Trump made it easy for them to start their own business. The list of good Trump did was longer then any President but they convinced your simple mind to believe lies that put you in fear. Wake up , your democrat party is destroying your Country, you have crime in some cities up over 1000 percent.. they passed a bill that illegals can join your police force , they literally changed laws in your Country behind your backs and are indeed getting rid of the middle class to bring you all to poverty as was done in Cuba and Venezuela with intense strict rules for you to break and send you to jail if you do.. Probably because it’s not clear if disqualification applies to a (ex) President and will end up with the Supreme Court making the interpretation and we know how that will go.

I have one Republican friend left that I could try to reach, but she doesn't trust anyone to really know the truth, so she keeps voting her conservative conscious. I can only hope the Trump trials are more believable to her, and that they make headway before the election.

I have 2 friends left that voted for Trump only because we go back more than 25 years. They are the only people I give a pass too. I stopped talking to one of them from 2017-2023. Just can't talk politics, it goes nowhere.

Thank you for your probing conversation. Again, another excellent episode. I had heard an interesting theory on NPR a few weeks ago. And I'm sorry to say I don't recall the name of the scholar/intellectual who put it forth so what I'm sharing I cannot verify. But it is this. The conservative base is so invested in religiosity, that therein lies a baked-in ideology of absolute rule. As in, an absolute ruler. A messiah. It is to surrender all accountability over to a higher power. A cult, indeed, Mr. Sykes.

I am not American but I have lived in the US twice. Many years ago visiting Tulsa OK, Oral Roberts was holed up in his tower praying for US$ 8 million. I was shocked, since in the UK we have very few evangelists, no tele evangelists, no mega churches, only 7 % of Brits today go to church. Anyway, needless to say, he got his 8 million so God didn't "call him home". I said at the time and have been saying ever since that religiosity would be the downfall of the US. People have thought I was a little odd, but if you fall for that kind of BS, basically you will believe anything. I am sad to say that what I have believed all those years ago up to today has materialized. The US is rapidly slipping backwards into some kind of "religious" fervour - anti gay, anti abortion, anti LGBT, and let's not mention racism. Except it has nothing to do with christianity. Nothing at all. Remember the Christian teachings when we were growing up....Feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick.....etc. etc....Jesus would last 10 minutes in the US of today - much too progressive and he's not white. The US has lost the plot. All the more so when a potential convicted felon can run for President. Stuff of madness. How sad to see what has happened in the US of today. Tragic really

In the spirit of full disclosure...as I watched the country that I so love and have fought for, for decades, disintegrate into cult fanaticism. ..I've become more fully appreciative of older, more mature countries that have already gone through these draconian growing pains. I have the utmost respect for countries that have learned lessons, had/have female leaders, and are in the process of reconciliation of colonization. That being said, my position on organized religion stands firm. I know, first hand, in person, real time, it's intent. But I do appreciate and respect your mature & sensitive insight. I've always wondered, what are the conditions where the United States is no longer the United States, and a second trump term has me asking that once again.
I ask because my loyalties at that point would no longer be with the name, at what point will the pretenders who happen to hold power be enemies of the country of my birth?
I can't imagine living in an authoritarian state under the American flag.
I suppose my real question is, how long will the courts hold out and not succumb to trump, how long will that branch hold any reasonable authority? The current Supreme Court gives a hint.
I will have integrity and vote. I will witness in my own way to others what is at stake in this upcoming election. In my own way I will be involved. I will not paralyze myself with fear.

The English and Scottish High Court has a mandatory retirement age of 75. There should be a retirement age of 80 for all politicians. Churchill was 81 and was clearly losing it in the early 1950’s.

Putting aside all legal and moral issues, I would really like to know how a 2nd Trump presidency would benefit us. What policies would he drive to improve the economy, education, healthcare, national security, infrastructure, innovation, scientific research, housing/homeless and reduce crime in America? Not big picture rhetoric, but specific actions that can be measured. Trump is counting on the media and politicians to let him off the hook so he can run the table. When was the last time he was asked a policy question?
