  • After many questions on my previous video of this machine, I decided to answer as many as I could remember in this video.
    Nose was a bit blocked up so scuse the lack of breath in some parts. I hope this covers peoples questions on this machine, but if not just ask away in the comments and I'll reply there, or do another vid.

    I have had the same machine for 2yrs now so I will add to your review. It is a very well made machine, and has made me lots of money. I do not use it for continuous production every day, but I probably use it 3-5 hours per week on average. I have never used a chiller. I have a 5 gallon bucket of water and the most I have run the machine continuously is about 2hrs, with no appreciable heating of the water. After a few months, I took the flying head lens assembly apart for the first time for cleaning and found it had a bunch of metal shavings on the lens inside from manufacturing. After cleaning these out it had a lot more power (as yo can imagine). I am still using the original laser tube, which surprises me. I was expecting to have to replace it by now. I too have made a removable grid for cutting, and I really like your add-on aiming laser. The side mounted aiming laser dot moves off center as you raise and lower the head. It can only aim accurately at the pre-set focal point. The other add-on I would recommend is some additional internal lighting. The flourescent light in back looks like the type you can daisy chain additional lights off of. I think its just a standard under counter light like you'd put under a kitchen cabinet. I have only used the rotary attachment a couple times. It is meant for equally cylindrical items only. To do a non-cylindrical round object, you'd need to make a jig to fit the object into. I have found that certain materials seem to engrave darker with the air assist OFF. When I bought mine they were $2700 USD, but they are now on Ebay for $1200-1300 USD. I am guessing there is a glut in supply. I FULLY recommend this laser engraver, and would not hesitate to buy another.

    nice video, couple of tips when cutting, cover the bed fully with some thin card or viscreen taped down around the edges then cut a mask (hole) in the area you will be working, this will increase the extraction of fumes and make for a cleaner cut, also it will help to pull gasses away from the bottom of the cut reducing the risk of fire or burning around the cut (especially if cutting acrylics), the better the extraction the better the finish on the rear of the job and can produce a straighter edge.
    viscreen can also help to keep the back of the cut clean as the black marks stay on the viscreen not the job.
    egg crate is great for cutting on but be careful as it gets very brittle over time and can burn and matk the back of materials very easily (see this a lot at work).
    For people asking about cutting metals, changing the frequency and power of the beam can help to get through some lighter alloys but be very careful if experimenting in this way, a 40 watt laser splash back or reflection is very capable of blinding you, invest in a pair of laser safety glasses, the may seem expensive but what price do you put on your vision.

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  10 лет назад

      The stock extraction fan in this unit is pretty hopeless, been intending on replacing it with something better. It does the job but a fair few fumes still leak into the room.
      As for cutting metals, it's not possible at all with only a 40W tube. You either need a very high power tube (You may be able to do very thin metals at 150W), or very high pulse power (YAG laser).

    I bought the same machine two years ago and had no idea what I was doing. Everything was a learning curve. I think it would be very helpful if there was a forum for owners of this type of machine here in Australia. It would save a lot of time and angst when your trying to figure out even small issues and problems.

      So far after two years, the only money I have spent on it was a new tube and a new lens, otherwise its been just fine. I use it about 10 hours per week, sometimes more. If I had to buy another laser, I would very likely buy the same machine again. Perhaps one with a bigger cutting table perhaps.

    I recently purchased a Triumph 6040 laser cutter from China for around the $5000 door to door. I am still learning to play with the settings but have had to add an extra extraction fan and a vacuum bed to hold thin material down to prevent warping. So far so good, I am hoping it stays like that. After 30 years of cutting by hand it is a pleasure to use a laser cutter. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your video as watching these have helped me understand what I needed to look for myself.

    • @clydewoods1032
      @clydewoods1032 10 лет назад

      Uri Yehuday Hi Uri, I am not really a techno person so I only use the software on my computer to run the laser cutter and find it fairly simple to operate. It takes a bit of experimenting to get the cut you want initially using the guidelines that come with it. They all look the same really, there must be a company that makes up the frames which are heavy as hell. Yolanda the sales person responded almost immediately to any queries I initially had via email which was a relief.
      I am hoping it will continue to go well, if you have it shipped it is cheaper than by air which I requested.

      Clyde Woods Thanks Clyde, where can I find an extra extraction fan and a vacuum bed to hold thin material?

    • @clydewoods3132
      @clydewoods3132 10 лет назад

      Uri Yehuday Hi Uri, I used the separate hexagonal bed provided and built a timber box about 80mm deep with a few supports and a 40mm outlet for my industrial vacuum cleaner to fit, adding an outlet pipe from the vacuum cleaner back into the exhaust pipe. I am sure one can spend more monies and get a vacuum that is quieter as mine is a little noisy. As far as an extra exhaust goes I have just used a heavy duty domestic bathroom number. Again for more monies there is I am sure something more appropriate and calculated. Mine works just fine. I do find that it is best to leave a small gape on the bed so that the vacuum cleaner does not over strain itself.

    A few tips from a random viewer: Maybe that grounding post is good for grounding the chassis of the water pump and other stuff not naturally connected to the main chassis. I haven't actually been around a laser cutter since I was shown a steel cutting one decades ago. That one would not have fitted in your room and presumably ran on 3x400V .

    I have a similar machine, A few mods I made...run tape over the top seam and around the laser case, this stops a bit of the smoke leakage. I also added a rubber seal along each side of the lid (inside) the kind of stuff you use on windows. Both these things really cut down the amount of excess smoke and smell.
    What sort of water cooler did you get? I've seen a cheap one which is "radiator cooling" there are others which are refrigerant coolers...thoughts between the 2 ($350 vs $600). Thanks for the video it convinced me to buy one and its been great.

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  10 лет назад +2

      Hopefully you shouldn't have to adjust much, I only had to tweak it very slightly and it's perfect. Use the Laser button on the control panel to mark spots on the tape over the mirror, but set the laser power at the minimum you can get it to still mark the tape (Was around 10-15% for me). Once you've done alignment, you may need to clean the optics. Don't get complacent with optic cleanliness, as any debris will get cooked onto it!

    A gentleman in England has the same machine and has determined that there is a huge power drop, which gets worse the longer the laser is cutting. Any cutting after a continuous 30 seconds or so is less and less effective, and after a few minutes of continuous cutting there is almost no power left (no cutting to speak of). Have you experienced this problem with your laser, LPFthings?

    • @mrcvry
      @mrcvry 4 года назад

      Power drops quickly if the cooling water heats up. Standard with most machines is just a pump and you have to fill a bucket with water. Depending on the size of the bucket the water will heat up quickly.
      An active cooler will prevent that. Ebay has them for about €150 up.

    I wonder if you could tell me what the focal length of your lens is?
    I have one of these which is just a month old and it appears to have a lens with 50.8 mm (2 inch) focal distance, but the older machines have a focal distance of 38mm (1 1/2 inches)
    The newer machines don't seem to have such good quality components for the mirrors or the main head assembly, i.e yours are nice shiny gold ones, the new machines are black and don't look so good.
    However the software on the machine is much better now than yours. I'm not sure if its possible to update the firmware.. Well I guess if its working for you, thats good, but the new firmware seems to have loads more features and looks more user friendly.
    Thanks..

Windows 10 is a 64 bit operating system and the software is no doubt made for a 32 bit operating system. You could try running the software in "Compatibility Mode" in Win 10, but honestly it probably won't work. I would recommend just getting an old PC or laptop.

      Sounds like either your tube is shot, optics are dirty, or out of alignment. 2mm/s should cut 1/4" acrylic no problems. Also check your water temp, as CO2 lasers will drop power dramatically even if the water is above 30C or so.

      Thanks Jeremy. I'm going to try your speed suggestions more thoroughly. Not sure to what degree I've tried both at the same time. The bits are all new so should be sharp. Already plan to make some sort of cabinet or shroud for it, just have to get around to it. I'm just learning this stuff so being able to use it more without bothering the neighbors would be great. I need to come up with a plan to attack the dust collection first and that probably adds some kind of vacuum system which is also probably going to be loud so more parameters :-)

    • @BattlefieldAccessories
      @BattlefieldAccessories 10 лет назад +1

      I found a great clip which solves this. Drop the table down lower than the focal length...Put a piece of material in the cutter....one end lifted up high the other low...Get the laser to cut (or just burn) a line down the length of the material. You will see the burn mark will be wide when it is short then will thin down at the focal length and then expand out again once it passes the focal length. Once done, find the the spot where the line is the most narrow and then measure the distance from the laser head to the material....this is your focal length. I made a piece of card the correct distance and just keep this handy for when I change material thicknesses.

      As long as you're using air assist the edges are pretty decent. You might get a little charring, but that's to be expected with a laser. Colour of the material doesn't matter with a CO2 laser.

  • @mikel4510
    @mikel4510 7 лет назад

    The 15 KV in that machine will not produce enough current to even give you a shock, but it WILL destroy most of the electronics. However, the 120 VAC used to power it all can kill if the case isn't properly grounded. So yeah, that ground is important, but not quite for the reason given in the video. Most locales require an installed ground in the building and to use something like the water line - just tie onto that or the ground strap already in place. Good video otherwise

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  7 лет назад

      The laser PSU will most definitely output enough current to give you a decent shock, they're capable of around 20mA short circuit current which in specific conditions could be fatal, and is definitely not pleasant.

    • @mikel4510
      @mikel4510 7 лет назад

      LPF - Although I don't know what the "PSU" is, I do know a lethal dose of current is 200 ma, ten times more than the math says this unit (15KV/60 W) is capable of producing. Although there is a fudge factor I doubt it is more than 10% higher than manufacturer's specs. If 10-20 ma is the rated short circuit current, that is what will flow when a CONDUCTOR is shorted across the leads and the human body is a very poor conductor and some times an infinite load (opposite of short) on the power source. Unless you've just come out of the ocean, are sweaty, standing on conductive material connected to ground, it is doubtful you'll feel anything. Hook up the ground, though - protect the equipment from internal shorts and yourself from external (120/240 VAC) shorts/grounds.

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  7 лет назад

      Mike L Not sure where you got 200mA as a lethal figure from, only takes 6mA across the heart. Once you overcome skin resistance (which will happen very easily at 15kV) it doesn't take much current to kill you. It's's unlikely this PSU (power supply unit) would, but it's definitely possible, and does give a nasty shock.

    • @mikel4510
      @mikel4510 7 лет назад

      LPF - I got the figure from my memories of my basic electricity classes in 1969, from my experience working in the electrical field for 45 years, and teaching electrical theory & safety for nearly as many years, and from verifying it with a quick internet search for "lethal amperage for humans".
      Sort circuit/fault rating of a power source is also the instantaneous trip, not a measure of what the power supply can provide indefinitely. If the rated short circuit amperage of the power supply is 20 ma, it would never pump out even close to that with a human as the load. Even assuming the person touches the unit in a way that causes the power supply to output 20 ma it would be for mere fractions of a second and might tickle their fancy, but not cause pain or kill.
      When I walk across the carpet in my living room, and am wearing rubber soled shoes I pick up one heck of a static charge - in the neighborhood of 50,000 volts or more so when I touch the kitchen sink the spark flies but doesn't hurt me because there is insufficient time for the current to affect me. Same is true if that power supply is short circuited - it will cease operating quicker than that first step across the carpet.
      If f the person is already ill, old, or otherwise susceptible to heart stoppage, just got out of the shower is standing on conductive material (and other physical factors) AND remains in the circuit for several seconds math and science supports the possibility of 6 ma (.006 amps) stopping their heart. Please, stop reaching for straws and long shot possibilities to support your premise. Better you learn the realities of the subject you are trying to discuss rather than quote random numbers found on the internet that seem to support your premise.
      But, as always - properly ground the equipment.

    • @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs
      @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs 8 лет назад +1

      My focus tool (if you want to call it that) is 8mm. Yoasically want to focus up/down until you have absolutely the smallest dot size. This will be the point of greatest intensity of the beam. You have less than 1mm either way until you really start losing beam intensity and precision for fin lines. If its too hard to tell with a single dot, try engraving a line at slightly different heights. The finest line is the optimum focus length. Measure it and make a "focus tool".

      You pick a color for each object on the screen. Each color can be assigned one of 3 options, Scan (engrave), Cut, or Dot (produces dotted line). To engrave a circular image and then cut it out you would just draw a circle of a different color around the image, and then assign that color to be cut. You can assign the order of operations by moving the color up or down in the cut list.
