  • "Quick" ramble video on the $2500AUD eBay laser cutter :)
    UPDATE: I have created a followup video to this answering a few questions: • The eBay Laser Cutter:...
    Update 13/02/14: I'm moving house this weekend and have had a few requests from people about setting up this machine as if you just took it out of the crate, so I'll try and make such a video sometime next week. I have, however, changed/modified a few things from the stock machine, which I'll cover a bit more as well. However the machine is still going strong :)

    Very new to this and found your comments invaluable. One thing I picked up elsewhere in 'Inside Adam Savage's Cave: The New Laser Cutter!' RUclips video was showing perspex being cut with protective paper cover both sides (just at the end of the video). This would solve your light reflection problem.

    I have the same machine. Its been 6-7 months now and I'm extremely happy with it. Had one of the $800 ones before and its really just a hobby machine and very limited in what it can do...and very SLOW. The larger machine with DSP control is a MUST HAVE if you want to do any type of production work. I think the tube IS 50W because its slightly larger than the 40W tube in the cheaper machines. I like your LED lights...I'll be copying that mod.

    Ive had this machine for 3 years, love it! The best way to raise the material from the bed is use magnetic screw bolt thingys

  • @LPFthings
    @LPFthings  11 лет назад +1

    @Gabriel Geller the distance from the material to head is determined by a small piece of acrylic they send you. You just put it under the nozzle and adjust the bed height until it touches. Also, if it's giving you the previous frame, it's possible you have the control board set on an old file. If you upload a new file and overwrite the old one, it goes into the same file number as the previous one. If you don't overwrite it, it goes into a new file number.

    I have made 2 cutting beds on the cheap. One is an old picture frame with heavy aluminum mesh (heavy enough not to sag). The other is a flat piece of steel with a bunch of screws epoxied onto it upside down (everything is painted flat black ). I also plan to motorize the Z axis (maybe even a separate stepper & single controller wired to the DSP controller Z axis switches). I'd like to see how to connect the air pump to the DSP (I have an extra on-off relay laying around).

    Sorry to be a comment hog, but one more cheap mod I have done it to use a Carpenter's square to create an origin guide. Use paper to cut origin axis lines then place the carpenter's square down along the lines, and epoxy some neodium magnets along the outer edges so you can remove or replace the square if you want. All my projects are now cut or engraved at the origin & I don't have to spend time aligning the material.

    If you want to clean the table just use a rag dampened with water and wipe it off and don't go over 90% of your power or the tube won't last very long. Just a couple of suggestions.
    Nice video. :-)

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  10 лет назад

      The ventilation eggcrate I've installed has taken care of that problem. I've also set a "hard limit" internally on the DSP that limits the tube current, I've found in the past that running at max current actually gives you LESS power, just more heat to dissipate and lower tube life.

    Just have to say: major props for using the proper term for the plastic, which is "acrylic" I have a bit of a pet peeve with people who call all acrylic "plexiglass" lol....plexiglass is a brand name, not a material....
    I did a lot of work with a local shop that laser cut acrylic and you're right, it stinks to high heaven....

    Thanks for great video. I got mine today and I am trying to do some work but i have problem when cutting 3 mm acrylic. It either burn the acrylic (it goes black) or it does not go through. I've tried zillion combinations of speed/power ratio but i can't find the right one.
    When looking at your video it cuts pure and clean but i cant get that. Usually acrylic gets black an sticky. My cuter it is also 50w but no led display. (I guess older model. )

    Lots of problems with my $2,500 'ebay' laser. The LaserCut software is really buggy. Lots of random errors in middle of the job. 40 watt laser tube was not cutting and discovered it tested at 20W. The support docs are Chinese. The manual z axis is a pain. Wish I would have paid for something tried ans true here in the US. Not recommended.

      I learned my lesson about expensive eBay Chinese junk during the summer. If it costs more than 300 dollars delivered I will just save longer and buy something I can drive to and punch someone out if it was a lie. There is hope as someone just bought another 40w Chinese laser and it was really good and the laser tube was 5 inches longer so measures out to be a true 40 watts. By the way if the tube is not the right length eBay will refund your money based on seller fraud.

    Maybe I missed it in the video, but how thick is the plywood you can cut reliably and at what speed?

    • @LPFthings
      @LPFthings  10 лет назад

      Reliably? Probably nothing over 6mm or so. It could probably handle more but too thick and the edges will start becoming pretty rough. As for speed, for 6mm ply, probably around 5mm/s.

      LPFthings Hi, I'm just playing with my new toy - same one as yours - all great fun and many thanks for the videos which have been very useful in getting to grips with this machine. Hoping you might be able point me in the right direction on this..... I'm trying and failing to cut some 6mm ply and wondering if you have had any success on this front? I just cannot get through to the other side, even at 2mm/100% - just get a very cooked top surface. I saw someone mention doing a mutipass cut but I guess we are limited to running the same file twice/three times to achieve this? Anyway, if you have any tips on cutting for those new to the game it would be fab.... Cheers from a sunny UK.

      yeah i noticed, that the power level can be input over the menue, so at least it should be possible to write some software to trick it, put a new arduino in it all together or something along those lines. i just dont know how difficult this would be and i doubt that i am capable enough to do it.

      The red laser you can see is only a few mW, it is not dangerous. The high powered lasers wavelength is 10.6um, which is absorbed by almost everything, including clear plastic and glass. There is no risk apart from putting body parts into the beam.

      @brackman71 10 лет назад

      Sorry to jump to a conclusion, then.
      The information you gave me about the red laser only being a "low-power spotting laser" was not clear in the video. You even showed the 4 safety switches with the one controlling the laser set to the "on and dangerous" position.
      I just want to make sure everyone stays safe!
