Local 177,retired Summer 2019 after 28+ yrs.now collecting my monthly pension. Was a great career, can be rough on the body as you age,but well worth all the effort you put into it.So glad I stuck with it,even though there was some tough times occasionally, especially when starting out at first.Worked with a lot of good people, great memories there too.Plus all the big tall buildings, bridges etc that I helped build, renovate & remodel will be around many decades after I'm gone.

I love this video!!! I totally get how you can gain your own independence from this kind of work... I was fortunate enough to get a job in a company similar to the types of jobs in this video and be taught to do things I'd never dreamed of... Sure, the work is hard, but the reward is more than anything I could have ever asked for... Thank you so much for this wonderful video!!!

I want to become a laborer but I have a very very bad fear of heights to the point where i freeze. Is it possible to get in this line of work without being in heights? would they make an exception and give me the jobs that don't require heights or is it basically whatever job they have i'd be required to do no matter what? Does anyone know? I would appreciate a response. Thank you.

Since I've started only been on the ground digging trenches or footings. A lot of cement pouring. Ive mostly worked at school renewal projects and City park builds. No hieghts involved. But mainly think your area of work detemines a lot of that.. Im so cal, Ventura county. Not a lot of high rises.

@@chriswalker143 there are many variables and everyone is different. Depends on the company as well, they can decide to keep you working or they might tell you your assignments over.. Y first two jibs lasted 2 weeks each mainly clean up at thebend of a job. Then i got a job building a park wich just started and was 7 months.. Once that ine ended a week later i was put with marine pile driving company called manson const. Co.. Only been out of work a month total since i began... Starting pay out here was $18.62.. If you're smart and test savy you can pass the tool recognition test and start off at a higher period apprentice. A few in the bootcamp i was in had started off in 2nd and 3rd period apprentice and the pay for that is $22.34 per hr.
