  • This video describes the construction of saturated calomel electrode (SCE). It discusses the reactions involved when it acts as anode and cathode. It explains the working of saturated calomel electrode. This video explains the calculation of single electrode potential of other electrodes using saturated calomel electrode (SCE) It also lists the advantages and disadvantages of saturated calomel electrode (SCE).
    Saturated calomel electrode (SCE), Metal-metal sparingly soluble ion saltConstruction.
    Secondary reference electrode - It is a secondary reference electrode, as it can be used to determine the standard electrode potentials of various electrodes.
    Half cell reactions
    When it acts as anode:
    Hg gets oxidised to form Hg22+ ions and releases electrons. Hg22+ ions combines with Cl- to form mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2).
    Electrode representation/Half cell representation
    When it acts as cathode:
    Mercurous chloride (Hg2Cl2) dissociates to form Hg22+ and Cl- ions. Hg22+ ions gains electrons and gets reduced to Hg.
    Advantages of saturated calomel electrode
    Advantages of SCE
    Advantages of calomel electrode
    The standard electrode potential is ‘0.2422 V’. Hence, in the determination of single electrode potential of an unknown electrode using SCE as the reference electrode.
    It is cheap, compact and easy to transport.
    It’s electrode potential is constant and easily reproducible.
    Easy to construct and maintain the cell.

    Mam , what is the difference between primary and secondary reference electrode?

    • @RevathiPurushothaman
      @RevathiPurushothaman  2 года назад

      Primary reference electrode is SHE where it is very accurate and used to determine the single electrode potential of all the other metal electrodes. The standard potential values are available in literature. But the potential values measured using secondary electrodes such as SCE, depends on the concentration of KCl, which will change with usage and time. Since setting up SHE in labs is difficult we use secondary electrodes.
