Further to Luke’s comments, anyone watching this who is thinking about getting into sailing, he is spot on. Go to your local sailing club and they will welcome you. Most clubs are always keen for new members. If you haven’t bought a boat yet and even if you have no experience, you can participate as a crew member and it’s a win win situation as most boats need more crew. After a season or 2 you could be very well prepared to buy your own boat and move forward. Whether that be continuing with that same club or sailing around the world.
Love your comment to the dad that wants to take his son sailing around the world. Exactly what I done, joining the local yacht club is the best way, go with people on the race days, you’ll learn sail trim and all the lines and much much more. I was a commercial fisherman so the rest comes easy for me.
Thanks a lot Brothers - I had never really thought about a toastie machine, but after seeing how much joy they can bring, I feel like I have to have one.
I'm 68 sailed to Fiji from NZ and bought a 40-foot catamaran. I am currently in Tunsia after sailing from La Rochelle to Yasmine Hammamet. Lost a rudder to Orcas. Wouldn't change a thing, we living again, live your dreams. BTW the brothers were one of our inspirational drivers.
Seamanship has always been about learning by practice. Your sage advice regarding how that is achieved is very true. You learn from your mistakes, you learn from trying different things and after a lifetime you will realise just how little you know and how much more there is to learn. Navigation is the same, whilst these days people tend to rely on technology you can still learn much more by simply coming to understand the more simple things such as tide & weather. An old saying stated that navigation is not a science but an art. Still true today, a thunderstorm can easily wipe out the electronics on a boat but I'm quite sure you would be fine using the compass and your knowledge.
Aye aye lads! Another great educational video for us thinking types out here who are always keen to learn . I esp. appreciated your sage advice about not listening to 99% of the (mostly) bs negative advice about just getting on with doing things! I am appalled by our obsession with credentials - crumbs, our supermarket chain stores here in OZ require everything, even if psyche test, for the position of shelf stacker! 😮 BTW, my better 'arf' of 40+ years has a Tip from the Kitchen re making golden toast! Michelle recommends that you spread a thin layer of butter on your toast BEFORE you toast it properly! I will attest to the benefits of doing it this way! 😊 I am the luckiest man on Earth! Michelle has just retired after 50 years of nursing-now the poor girl has me to look after ❤! I see you encountered one of our afternoon t'storms. They are a feature of Summer and they follow a set pattern of afternoon terrestrial heating driving convection which then migrates to the coast before dissipating over the ocean.😊
Quite a few have said put butter on the toast first I think this is the way to go 😄. We have encountered lots of late afternoon thunderstorms pretty scary when you're out sailing. Wishing you a very Happy Christmas 🎁
@TheSailingBrothers very merry Christmas chaps! Over the years, I have been researching lightning proofing boats, which in itself seems to be an impossibility but possibly easier with a steel hull ĺike Atlas. I think I might have something for an idea to put to you. Since the basic issue is to find a way of discharging a high voltage into the ocean quickly, I am wondering if a length of say 2m. heavy steel cable welded to the deepest part of the keel to be permanently immersed in the slipstream could work? Other than that, how do you guys feel about a wooden mast? Unfortunately, you have landed smack in the height of our t'storm season, but the good news is that the weather should be calming down a little from hereonwards. There is still cyclone season to come, but I notice that the MJO seems to have done its thing for now, so ĥopefully by the time of its ñext visit, the danger period will have passed ! That's the theory, anyway!
@@TheSailingBrothers True... The only thing that has changed really, is that people think their opinions matter more, and they shout them all over the internet... As a consequence, a lot of people are scared to try anything new, in-case they are shouted at... Give me the adventure any time...
Luke agree with your comment regarding the gentlemen thinking about buying a sailboat & setting off with his son, but I would like to add to it. You guys were taught to sail by your father, it would be a good idea for this gentleman to find someone with some sailing experience who could take him sailing and teach him a few things. Another great sailing production. Spot on advice regarding joining a club and learn about sailing from their community. That’s how I learned and every sail out is like a school day, something new to learn on every outing ⛵️😎
Watching this and it’s Christmas Eve. Wow what a sail! Nothing too rough but I’d hate to be in a thunderstorm like that worrying about the possibility of a lightening strike. Funny how luck always favours folks who just focus on what they can control. Adam’s drone shots were well worth a bit of claret. Atlas looks amazing with that big sail flying. Have a really great Xmas guys. Kindest regards. Pete.❤️😎👍
It is never a nice feeling being at sea in a lightning storm. The drone shots were worth it although it is very scary trying to land the drone back only moving boat. Fantastic Christmas pete 🎄
Release the Dragon. 👍 At least you got some drone shots 🤣 You two are an inspiration for most of the rest of us. Toasty machine loads of power. @5.07 looks to be a fair bit of white smoke from engine.
Luke - I fully respect those who have a portfolio full of certificates - but for me it’s about the university of life - your message / advise is absolutely spot on - look at the life experiences / knowledge that you both are able to pass on to younger generations to come . Merry Christmas to you both .
We are so lucky to learn from our experiences. Merry Christmas! Yes if you have the confidence get out there and learn that's what they used to do years ago
Spinnaker as usual looks fantastic. Always nice to see the good weather and leisurely sailing. You have certainly showed many what is possible. The only thing I would add is find a quality build boat. You certainly did with Atlas. Some boats that were made wouldn’t make it across the bad in a Swell or strong winds. Enjoy people.
Such wise words Luke 👍totally agree with you. And the drone ads a new perspective to your vids (mind your fingers Adam! )happy crimbo brothers 👍❤️👍🏴

guys @ min 5:15 you are talking about the wind filling in on the quarter. - within that video you can see the engine smoke/exhaust drifting away from the transom ( also @ min 24:37). If I was a betting man, I would take a bet that you have a cooking issue in that your exhaust water /air mix is spilling steam. It would be well worth your while to inspect the exhaust mixing elbow. they are notorious for partial blockage and overtime overheating. so - you have either a water through put problem (your impellor is less than average) or more likely your mixing elbow is playing up and clogged. either way it's worth a proper inspection

Lightning strikes of sailboats at sea are actually really rare. Having a tall mast doesn’t necessarily make you more vulnerable as the lightning is looking to get to earth as quick as possible and the quickest way is straight into the sea, which is all around you.
Wise words about only living once, looks like the towel in the background has only been washed once😂😂. Merry Christmas 🎅 from the Tamar River in Tasmania. Fair winds lads

Nice looking kite breathing fire boys and so easy with the sock. If you're tight reaching with it you could probably use the main as well for a bit more speed. That town is pronounced Bal-in-a. Have fun.
The 2 bars I miss on the east coast: Tweed and Ballina. You boys have got a pair, no doubt about that. We're at Clarence River at the moment. Pity we missed meeting you guys.
Hi lads, great channel. I might catch you up as I sail round this beautiful world. Regarding lightening and what you suggest you would do with a direct hit; it’s extremely likely all your electronics including your VHF will be fried. Best put all emergency electronics. (EPIRB, HANDHELD VHF, MOBILE) in the oven; it acts as a faraday cage and would protect your vital electronics. No point mentioning the grab bag as you should have that ready to ditch. Safe sailing👍⛵️👍
We are based in Milford Haven Pembrokeshire and its been great to follow your adventures, made that little bit more special knowing you guys sailed from our home turf 🙂 Could I just ask what video editing software your using? Its notable that you vids are always nice and sharp. It could be a combo of Software and settings but it would be interesting to know to help improve our own efforts. Keep up the great work guys.
We were in Rudder's boat yard when we left Wales, just up the river from Milford. Luke uses Sony Vegas 20. The episodes are looking so good and sharp these days because Luke has had four years editing experience now 👊
@@TheSailingBrothers Many thanks guys that's very helpful info. You may be interested to learn that Rudders now has a waiting list to get in there, so they must be doing something right. Keep living the dream guys we are following your adventure with keen interest 🙂
Hey guys great video as usual, i,m not a expert sailor but i watch lots of youtube vids i saw one suggested rapping a wet rope around the mast and putting in the water over the side this will help disapate the electric from lighting strike cheers Paul
Before going south, don’t miss Yamba and the Clarence River. btw the ‘a’ in Ballina is flat, so not as in ‘ball’ but more like as in ‘catamaran’. Same with Yamba, if you go there…it’s definitely not Yahmmbah!
I remember when I hiked the Pacific Coast Trail from the Mexican border to Canada. I made it halfway up, thought it was too long, so I turned around and hiked back.
I did the Gold Coast to Sydney trip solo last week.. had very similar conditions to you-- beautiful sailing. Just a note, Australian Authorities can get very picky around rules.... so, it is a rule that coming across a bar, each person must be wearing a lifejacket-- they can and do fine people if they aren't, and, NSW has strict complicated rules about lifejackets in dinghies. I have personally been fined $115 for not wearing a lifejacket in the dinghy going 100m to the shore. I was furious, but they there was nothing I could do. Phil
Good advice. The water police do not mind their presence being felt, in Australia. But, having known a former inspector of the water police division of Vicpol, and having heard all number of his personal accounts, they do deal with a lot of incredibly stupid people on a daily basis.
@@TheSailingBrothers And if you think everything else is daylight robbery in Australia (it is), wait until you see the fines attached to an infringement notice.
Quite a bit of smoke coming out of the engine exhaust in Grahame’s footage. Might be worth checking it out guys. Love the sandwich maker. Pure genius! 😊
It’s steam i think. It’s always been like that. I personally don’t love it; I only get steam when the impeller is failing but not sure why the exhaust gets so hot.
We have checked the whole engine over she is running fine and cool. We usually get a lot of steam out of the exhaust when the water is cooler. They call these engines the steaming Bukh
Welcome to Ballina! I live in a place called Lismore just west of Ballina, I’ve been watching your videos and they are very inspiring,, I’m originally from Bolton. You scream “anything is possible “ I wish you the very best for your journey… Bit of English humour…Adam has a look of James vardy the football player…on drugs. Look forward to watching your travels.
Oh no I’m sorry I missed you! Would have loved to have shown you around. Lismore is a” funny “ town. We got smashed by a flood of biblical proportions a couple of years ago,, homes and businesses were completely submerged! We are recovering though. The look alike is with the best intentions!!😂 You’re very inspiring, I’ve decided that I’m going to join Ballina’s sailing club in the new year.. you have set me on my way!! If you sail past these parts again, please let me know! Merry Xmas and good sailing for 2025!
Thanks Luke for your encouragement to get out there and sail. I’m 56 my kids have left home and I live in Conwy near sea with my wife and have dreamed of sailing a small yacht for many years only ever done a bit of dinghy sailing . Now living near coast I have the opportunity. Thinking of starting perhaps with a Sadler 26 . But have been a bit daunted by how much there is to learn , I’m worried about the stuffiness and cliques you get in sailing clubs just want to cruise and sail with my wife or single handed too. Thinking of doing rya daysailor course to get some more knowledge of navigation , basic skills etc and then just going for it around Anglesey and north wales to start with . Any advice ? Love your channel BTW
It's a good idea just to get some experience first with your local yacht club or a day course just to dip your toes in the water so to speak. Just take your time don't rush and only do what you feel is comfortable 👍
The drone shots with the dragon out were beautiful and worth the nick on the finger. It's crazy how today's voyage started off so quiet and it ended in a storm. Save the Cheese! I agree with the positive message to new sailors and it extends to so many other things too. One of my hobbies is large scale trains in the garden and when new guys ask about getting into the hobby the naysayers come out of the wood work to tell them they need to spend thousands to "do it right" but my advice is to spend a few hundred, get some track down, get a train running and have some fun. What a score that little toaster was, now you can have grilled cheese sandwiches everyday!

We’ll try that next time, thanks for the tip!
Ballina 😁
The 2 bars I miss on the east coast: Tweed and Ballina. You boys have got a pair, no doubt about that. We're at Clarence River at the moment. Pity we missed meeting you guys.
We just had to check out the bars 🤣
Great video Lads MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR keep the videos comming KRO 🎄
Happy holidays!
Wishing you a very Happy Christmas 🎁
You made me laugh trying to remember not to hold on to anything metal in the cockpit in that thunderstorm.
We were scared of Dieing 🤣🤣
Say hi to my home town bros.. Ballina abides!
Ballina rocks 😎
Hi lads, great channel. I might catch you up as I sail round this beautiful world. Regarding lightening and what you suggest you would do with a direct hit; it’s extremely likely all your electronics including your VHF will be fried. Best put all emergency electronics. (EPIRB, HANDHELD VHF, MOBILE) in the oven; it acts as a faraday cage and would protect your vital electronics. No point mentioning the grab bag as you should have that ready to ditch. Safe sailing👍⛵️👍
Lightning storms at sea is one of a sailors worst nightmare as you said if we got hit by lightning everything would get fried 😔
Glad to hear that you've got your priorities right... cheese for the life raft! Do you have a mini grab bag in the fridge with it in?
Yes we have a grab bag it's full of cheese 🤣🤣🤣
Makes me proud to have be conceived in port talbot Steel mill in 1962.Up the tafs
A pretty special place with lots of history ✌️
Delicious!!
So good!
Merry christmas 2024 from Marseille…
Merry Christmas 🎁
Hey guys great video as usual, i,m not a expert sailor but i watch lots of youtube vids i saw one suggested rapping a wet rope around the mast and putting in the water over the side this will help disapate the electric from lighting strike cheers Paul
That is an interesting idea we will have to look into that Paul! Thanks!
Before going south, don’t miss Yamba and the Clarence River. btw the ‘a’ in Ballina is flat, so not as in ‘ball’ but more like as in ‘catamaran’. Same with Yamba, if you go there…it’s definitely not Yahmmbah!
Okie dokie 👌
I agree with all you said, I bought a 26 ft boat of eBay for 2k and never regretted it
Absolutely fantastic 😎
I remember when I hiked the Pacific Coast Trail from the Mexican border to Canada. I made it halfway up, thought it was too long, so I turned around and hiked back.
At least you got to see lots of the country 👊
Oh wow we didn't really know this don't want a fine of the authorities!
All good fellas. As I said - it’s always been like that as far as I can remember and you’ve come a long way!!
Welcome to Ballina!
I live in a place called Lismore just west of Ballina, I’ve been watching your videos and they are very inspiring,, I’m originally from Bolton.
You scream “anything is possible “
I wish you the very best for your journey…
Bit of English humour…Adam has a look of James vardy the football player…on drugs.
Look forward to watching your travels.
We actually caught the bus to lismore from Ballina 👊. Thanks for the look-alike I think 🤔🤣
Oh no I’m sorry I missed you!
Would have loved to have shown you around.
Lismore is a” funny “ town.
We got smashed by a flood of biblical proportions a couple of years ago,, homes and businesses were completely submerged! We are recovering though.
The look alike is with the best intentions!!😂
You’re very inspiring, I’ve decided that I’m going to join Ballina’s sailing club in the new year..
you have set me on my way!!
If you sail past these parts again, please let me know!
Merry Xmas and good sailing for 2025!
Ah yes, rain in Oz. I was there in Dec 2010 and it seemed to rain pretty much all the time.
I think some years are wetter than others
Yeah! Don’t forget the cheese Adam! 🤣🤣
No way 🤣🤣
Hunted by lightning 🌩!!
😱
Just take your time don't rush and only do what you feel is comfortable 👍
well done you two ... you live once ad go do it
You only live once
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the drone footage. It was perfect weather for flying the drone. That is exactly right with the advice start small and enjoy 😁
Which country do you live in Todd
@@TheSailingBrothers USA. You guys practically went by my house when you went through the Cape Cod Canal. 😁
