    I think A-EBL or 52100 would be good stainless and non stainless options for some larger knives. Obviously steels like Magnacut would be awesome to see, but I think s35vn is still a heck of a steel

    I learned a lot lately about knife steel, enough to know that I have a lot to learn. I have close to a hundred knives and I have no idea what steel any of them are or how to find out. A lot are gifts and just show pieces and about a dozen are my daily carry rotation depending on what the days plan is.

    Good choice and reasoning. I'm sure this info can be trusted. Seems like every time new charts and graphs come up they differ greatly from the last set I thought were good lol. I'm at the point if a steel works for what I need to do I stay with it regardless what any study says. I've always had good luck with frowned upon steels like 420hc, 440's, d2 and the cr/mov groups that get laughed at. Heat treat and quality process much more important than type of steel.

    • @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
      @Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors  Год назад +1

      You know i had totally thrown out charts and stuff as well years ago but i think these charts seem to support my experience and they come from what i believe to be relutable- as reputable as any, so im going to limit my charts to one source and i think thatll help.
      And in the woods i agree. Ill say that in a folder when cutting abrasive stuff i DO notice a difference in edge holding and there have been times in the bush that i have noticed differences in steel and stuff but yeah-
      The reality is that for the most part steel has to meet a par in performance and performance beyond par can be difficult to quantify outside of controlled testing so-
      Trust the maker and the heat treat
      Or dont.
      Those are larger criteria than steel choice usually.

    Very good information and breakdown, I wonder if you'll ever do a magnacut run of knives. Seems like it's the bandwagon thing to do sort of and not saying thats a bad thing. I've just noticed more and more companies starting to use it and hyping it up. And from what I've heard about it It very well maybe worth all the hype. I'm am intrigued by Magnacut and Bakerforges Damascus very sweet stuff just looks absolutely incredible.

    Been following these charts for over a decade now and studying the Crucible data charts they provide online. Very intrigued at the science behind steels. We just saw the new hangar collapse on Wednesday at the Boise airport (look up pictures) and it is amazing to see steel beams that heavy and wide buckle like that and bend as though they were tin foil. Anyway, I just received the Kabar Snody Big Boss today in S35VN for only $55 (on sale now) because I wanted a dedicated food prep knife with belly and realized I don't have any stainless fixed blades. I've never had any in S35VN so this will be interesting. I will definitely be looking at yours in the future.
