American Joins Unique Village Ritual 🇮🇩🇺🇸

  • Hello there from Ngadas. Today, I get to join a very unique ritual here in Indonesia. This ritual is a Tengger tradition called Entas-Entas. In Old Javanese and Tengger dialects, the word entas means to go upward or ascend. (The Tengger entas-entas serves not simply to commemorate the dead but to aid in their passage to heaven. The ritual remembers not a single individual but the collective dead of a family. It is held whenever a family has amassed the substantial capital required to sponsor this ritual and its extensive social festivities.)
After the ritual was over, Pak Kartono, my homestay owner, took me on a little adventure to his childhood village of Jakak Ijo. It was a really cool ride. He took me through the mountains and up down the windy road that's wrap around the potato farms in the area. It's really a beautiful sight to see. In the other village, there was another circumcision celebration and therefore another huge gathering of people cooking and celebrating. It's the village that never stops partying. Pak Kartono then took me to his childhood home and I met his mother. We enjoyed a cup of coffee and ate strawberries together in her kitchen.
Just another incredible and memorable day in Ngadas.
    Thanks again for watching!

Perhaps the "Bob Webner" that Mr. Kartono called was "Robert W. Hefner". Robert W. Hefner is a professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Pardee School of Global Affairs at Boston University, USA. He researched about the Tengger Bromo tribe. He wrote several books about the Tengger Bromo tribe:
    1. "Hindu Javanese: Tengger Tradition and Islam", New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1985.
    2. "The Political Economy of Mountain Java: An Interpretive History", London: University of California Press, 1990.

i think some of it comes from being a teacher in japan. Many times I was the only foreigner in the room so all eyes would be on me. And when the parents would come to watch my lessons, i would have to simultaneously teach and put on a performance at the same time... So it was uncomfortable at first, and i still feel that, but you get used to it over time

    • @aryandagautama6947
      @aryandagautama6947 2 года назад

it was a very helpful experience my brother. Oh ya... first , sorry if I seem to teach you ... this is just a little suggestion so that you look more friendly in Indonesia, if you are passing someone or a group of people who are older than you say the word "permisi (excuse me)" and that word can also to start when you want to ask people who don't know ... sorry brother I was impressed to teach you I just want you to be more accepted in Indonesia and easier to socialize with Indonesian people. for your videos i like you really explore Indonesia through the countryside unlike other youtubers. spirit and i always watch your videos. Terima kasih

    speaking of village ngadas...
it is indeed a very beautiful village and special because the weather is very cold especially at night ...
I myself always stop by Ngadas village after I climb to Mount Semeru and stop by Bromo and then to Ngadas Village...
I hope one day you can also feel the sensation of climbing to Mount Semeru or other mountains in Indonesia, especially in the East Java area...
I also ask for prayers so that Mount Semeru recovers quickly after the eruption a few months ago...
have a nice day Mr. nick

In Javanese tradition, people held parties or ceremonies all through the year except 2 months which are Ramadhan and Muharam (Islamic almanac).
Pak Kartono said "Jek tas teko buwuh" = just got from the party.
When people attend a party (buwuh), they bring something for the host (money or agricultural stuff) and for the return, the host serve many kinds of foods and giving a bag of foods/goods for the guest to bring home.
Pak Kartono called his mother "MBOK" it's a Javanese traditional calling for Mother.
    Keep making amazing content Nick👍

Oh..one more thing I should inform you.
That in 1st Muharram, the Tengger tribe always hold a ceremony called KASODO ,it's the biggest ceremony that will attended by so many people around Java and even foreigners.
And before Kasodo, there will be another ceremony called KARO. It's a big one too..but not as packed as Kasodo.
The 1st Muharram will be on 30th July. So..if you're now not in Ngadas anymore..you should come back Nick👌
