  • MERICS is pleased to present a key-note speech and panel discussion with Germany’s Federal Minister for Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger. On the panel, the minister is joined by Jakob Edler, Executive Director of Fraunhofer ISI and Tai Ming Cheung, Director of the IGCC of the University of Calfornia. MERICS Executive Director Mikko Huotari will moderate the event.
The symposium is part of a two-day international academic conference on the Chinese National Innovation and Techno-Industrial Eco-Systems jointly organized by the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) and MERICS.
China pursues a program of unprecedented ambition to manage the entire innovation chain. Seeking to steer outcomes, the Chinese government is increasingly intervening, organizing, and coordinating activities that stretch from basic research to final applications in industry and defense. The Chinese approach implies interventions in successive specific links of the innovation chain. The conference brings together leading international experts to understand the organization, functions, and increasingly interdependent operations of both the national innovation system and the techno-industrial eco-system. The symposium on global innovation competition and collaboration in a shifting geopolitical context will connect the latest academic findings with current challenges in politics and industry.
