Mike Patey - a genius! He builds on the verge of making aviation history, yet he is excited as a child when a jet flies by. ;) And he does so much for the community (search and rescue is not all he does) and doesn´t make it a big deal. Humble, nice, down to earth, a genius and still appreciates the child inside. What a man.
Perfectly said! He is definitely all that. I’m just stunned at how he created AND built Scrappy in a little over a year while working full time and doing other things. He’s a craftsman and genius, a role model, motivator and a genuinely nice man. A Leonardo DaVinci on steroids. My son and I drove 3 hours to meet him and got to have a video with him and Mark saying “back to work!” He’s approachable and loves his fans. Hope he never changes. He clearly has an awesome wife. Mike is one of the greatest aviation geniuses of the new century. I'm so glad to have him as my online teacher and role model of a good life in general.
I live about 30 miles from Oshkosh. Mike is certainly a solid guy, Scrappy is the kind of aircraft only a passionate and skilled fabricator could build. Commercial builders could never do what he does. I think meeting Mike would be like drinking an energy drink!!! I built a RC STOL plane similar to Draco capable of 18" rollout, true vertical descent landing capable, and unlimited vertical. It's nuts to fly, all because of Mike's inspiration! Go Scrappy go!!!!! I think I will name my plane Scrapper as is mostly made from reminders of other planes.
@@CLEAREDDIRECT They protect the airplane in case it starts to twirl around in a ground loop after landing or during take-off. As the wing tips over (either side), instead of striking the wing directly, the stingers absorbs a lot of shock and also transfers the load onto the main truss/center part of the wing. This way it prevents the ribs and other parts from taking a direct hit and causing untold damage right off the bat. Of course there's a limit to the protection but at least it gives the pilot some leeway in case s/he gets into a ground loop. The idea comes from early 1900 airplanes which were notoriously prone to ground loops, so the builders build in these things to absorb the shock and break off when it became too much. That way it at least slowed down the momentum, leading to far less damage than without it.
@@kevinrtres Ah yes, I did notice them but didn’t know what they were. I’m new to tailwheel aircraft but that makes lots of sense. Thanks for the explanation!
