    Mike Patey - a genius! He builds on the verge of making aviation history, yet he is excited as a child when a jet flies by. ;) And he does so much for the community (search and rescue is not all he does) and doesn´t make it a big deal. Humble, nice, down to earth, a genius and still appreciates the child inside. What a man.

      Perfectly said! He is definitely all that. I’m just stunned at how he created AND built Scrappy in a little over a year while working full time and doing other things. He’s a craftsman and genius, a role model, motivator and a genuinely nice man. A Leonardo DaVinci on steroids. My son and I drove 3 hours to meet him and got to have a video with him and Mark saying “back to work!” He’s approachable and loves his fans. Hope he never changes. He clearly has an awesome wife. No husband could be this creative and hard working without a wonderful, supportive and loving wife. She’s a rock star too! And I bet she’s extremely intelligent like Mike. He is complete with her in his life. He seeks and achieves excellence, so she must be an amazing person. It’s an exciting time for aviation and to be watching his creativity unfold. Thank you Mike!!

But even a humble truck driver knows that this guy is an incredible aircraft designer, he has this incredible talent and knowledge when it comes to how air flows around a wing and the designed he created extending slats and flaps to create an incredible amount of lift on that wing is amazing! The way all the parts move ,extend,retract,with the minimum amount of moving parts to avoid breakdowns is brilliant! If my dream ever becomes true ,I would purchase the stol aircraft he designed.

      I drove over the road I know the hours away from home. May I suggest if you want to fly and your budgets Limited start with an ultra-light. There are many great models out there available. As kits or pre-owned many look very similar to a cub. But meets part 103. Then with a few lessons you're flying no license required for you or your UL plane. Then if you want to transition to sport license in the same type configuration sport plane your hours of flight can transfer. Quite often you can find a decent one on Barnstormers round 5K

    I live about 30 miles from Oshkosh. Mike is certainly a solid guy, Scrappy is the kind of aircraft only a passionate and skilled fabricator could build. Commercial builders could never do what he does. I think meeting Mike would be like drinking an energy drink!!! I built a RC STOL plane similar to Draco capable of 18" rollout, true vertical descent landing capable, and unlimited vertical. It's nuts to fly, all because of Mike's inspiration! Go Scrappy go!!!!! I think I will name my plane Scrapper as is mostly made from reminders of other planes.

    • @CLEAREDDIRECT
      @CLEAREDDIRECT  3 года назад

      I didn’t! What’re they for?

    • @kevinrtres
      @kevinrtres 3 года назад +2

      @@CLEAREDDIRECT They protect the airplane in case it starts to twirl around in a ground loop after landing or during take-off. As the wing tips over (either side), instead of striking the wing directly, the stingers absorbs a lot of shock and also transfers the load onto the main truss/center part of the wing. This way it prevents the ribs and other parts from taking a direct hit and causing untold damage right off the bat. Of course there's a limit to the protection but at least it gives the pilot some leeway in case s/he gets into a ground loop. The idea comes from early 1900 airplanes which were notoriously prone to ground loops, so the builders build in these things to absorb the shock and break off when it became too much. That way it at least slowed down the momentum, leading to far less damage than without it.

    I always though Mike must do some military stuff, can anyone shed any more light on this? I would LOVE to know what he has been involved with military wise. What an inspiration, keep up the good work =D Best wishes from UK

    As long as he was taking to do any videos on the wing I was starting to think he may have become gun-shy after trashing Draco..... But he's done some totally unreal shit on that thing....LOL. Very trick wing. So glad he's airborne with that monster.

    I don’t know what it is, but Mormons (like Mike) always seem like the most genuinely nice, positive people you can ever meet. It’s not that fake kind of nice either, it’s quite literally give you the shirt off their back, randomly stop and help a stranger change a flat tire kind of nice.

      Find a couple of "Mormon" missionaries female or male and ask them that very question. I promise if you listen to what they have to say you to can become just as happy.

    High RPM with a large pitch/paddle prop you end up with inefficient pull of air - just like boating where it's called "cavitation".

      @ Bru Star, funny that, as we recall this odd prop came from an airboat, so unsurprised that he's had issues at the high end, but then "Scrappy" morphed quite a bit from Mike's initial description of recovered bits and pieces to custom machined and custom carbon/kevlar/fiberglass fabbed everything, to our great satisfaction and entertainment. There's seemingly nothing he can't create. Eventually, he'll probably show us something amazing as a prop as well. More will be revealed!

      @@billhart9832 He's already said that the prop is purely an extreme data-gathering exercise (it's safe to say he never actually believed it would be practical long-term solution), he's working with a major company on a (you can bet novel) constant RPM prop that will allow maximum speed, at the moment he said he's flying 120-125 max (not sure if that's knots or MPH).

      Well finished Beta testing. Seems like it has a few phases of adaptations it will go through in various configurations.

    I’ve been following since he started building Draco. He such an amazing guy! I wonder if Mike has tested or considered an extension to move the prop out fwd? It looks like that might improve the cavitation problem.
