The top one is the closer match to the Icon pair I'm holding in my hand right now, mostly due to the handle color and surface texture, and also how far they were dipped. The size of the opening for the nut and the size of the nut itself is slightly larger for the Icon.
Top is Snap-On, bottom is Icon. you can tell by the grip shine and the bolt size/shape. Also, the hole for the adjustment is more peanut shaped on the Snap-On. In the hand they feel identical and visually the diffences are millimeters.
Top icon , bottom snap on , you can tell by how high the rubber handle goes up on the snap on , and the squared/flat handle right above the rubber , the snap on also is rounder and wider below the pivot point
Snap-on is the lower one... with the grips touching. And with the handles in the same position the Icons jaws are not parallel when the Snap-ons are. To be parallel the Icons needs the handles to be slightly opened up more.
The top is the icon. The long nose part of the plier has the gap in them. I assume that's how they got around a patent design. It's just enough different. But I wish more of the reviewers would tall about that part. Does that mean it doesn't have full grip when pulling on items cause there's a bow on the nose? I have no idea, but it feels like it's being glossed over.
Just looking at tiny details here and there and not having had much experience with either brand, I'll say ICON is top and Snap-On is bottom. The difference especially stands out in the handles.
@lastbesttool The handles give it away, but I’m really curious why Snap-on isn’t suing for patent infringement. I think your comment in a previous video, regarding Harbor Freight/Icon knowing where the bodies are buried, was really insightful. 👍🏻
@k1_w3 last time snapon sued HF, was over the Daytona jacks. HF said the jacks were made in the same factory, only snapon assembled them in the US. The case was dropped before discovery revealed the truth. Also, judge pretty much green lit stealing designs. HF owner is worth 15 billion, He can pretty much do (steal)whatever he wants
They may have a utility patent on the three-position design, but that only helps so much. Prior art may be an issue if they want to defend the patent in court.
I'm thinking the top is icon, in my experience the HF dip has a slightly shinier finish than snap ons, but it could just be a trick of the light. what makes me a little more sure is that the handles are more round on the top and snap ons usually have a more square-ish profile to the dip
Botttom is Snap On. Not because it looks higher quality or anything. Just because the handles right above the dips are flat forged, I have both the 46 and 47acfs and they both have the flat handles. The regular Icon 3 position slip joints are forged that way as well if I remember correctly and I love those pliers. That rounded style of the upper pair of pliers is something that I havent seen personally from SO or HF on the Snap On clones so far.
Top is the Icon. Snap-On always has wider handles. When their pliers are copied that's one part that's rarely ever the same. Plus the grip is matte and not glossy like the Icon.
They’re both Icon. Snap-On would be pitted , magnetised, and covered in sand/dirt/grime directly from the factory. Also ran, I don’t know how HF has escaped plural trade dress suits. All of the famous Stanley hand plane clone makers were….erm…cavalier. So, who knows?
the rubber grips go up too far on the snap on and hit each other when you try to use them in position 3. The ICON also has glue/epoxy inside of the rubber grips. ICON on the top
Top is the icon cuz I see a little area less finished all the way by the three-point joint and the bottom one the handles look a little wider at the beginning before the crip was added
My guess top is ICON. I wanted to pick up a pair today at my local HF, with the 20% off coupon, but sadly they don't even have a home for it on their pliers wall. Hopefully I can pick up a pair, or two, some day.
I had to ask them to look it up at the register. No spot for them on the wall but they did have them in back. I am guessing they aren't staying in house long enough to make the wall! But I had to compare for the price.
@@thelasthack Thanks for the suggestion. I actually thought about asking one of the associates to see if they had any in the back, but the website said they didn't have any in stock. I'm not in a hurry to get one, it'd just be nice to have. They'll have another 20% off coupon eventually and hopefully they'll have it in stock at that time.
The ICON has a more of a gap when closed due to a slight curve and the SnapOn is straighter. I've never even seen either in person but I've watched enough videos to know the top is the ICON lol
I believe it's a patent for the multi position slip joint as opposed to the needle nose aspect. So this isn't any more treading on its toes than the non needle nose triple slip joint.
As long as my tool dealer stops by my ship and warranties my brokers, that’s what I care about. I’m more than willing to pay the difference for the service I get.
@lastbesttool According to other RUclipsrs that are into the YT algorithm meta, yes. Personally, I'd just like to enjoy the daily LBT vid and get to bed before 11pm PST 😅 (although having a more active comment section closer to the time of posting does facilitate a better discussion imo)
The bottom is the Snap-On. You can tell by the thickness of the upper portions of the metal grips along with the texture and shine of the grips themselves. Also, if they were closed, you could tell by the space between the jaws.
I don't know about the patent necessarily I feel like there are other Brands like tsunoda that have triple slip joint pliers might have even seen one or two with four position ones I would say there's more deviation with these Talon grips then the original slip joint model icon made.
*They're both Knipex pliers!* 👌🏻🤣🤣😂🤣 I'm saying the top is Icon because the handles are more shiny than snappys more matte finish on theirs on the bottom. Otherwise theres very minimal differences in a few spots. I'm gonna have to go drop #24.99 on the new Icons in a few weeks when all the hype calms down!
Top is the HF. You can tell by the handles (HF is brighter and glossier). Also the wear marks on the slip joint. Both quality tools, but having owned the LN47ACF I will never not buy Snap On
'Patented three-position slip joint' ....it doesn't say the patent is Snap on's own intellectuall property. Patented yes, but patented by another company a very long time ago, so long ago any original ip rights have expired. That's why Icon are able to freely use the joint, they aren't copying Snap on, the are copying the same original patent Snap on are copying.
Yeah I highly doubt this 3 hole adjustability is something they just created. I've seen cheap 3 hole adjustable pliers long before these were thought of.
right, all the people commenting on the video like they are geniuses for explaining to the difference between them to tell which is which, acting light doc didn’t tell them.
Top is Icon
The top one is the closer match to the Icon pair I'm holding in my hand right now, mostly due to the handle color and surface texture, and also how far they were dipped. The size of the opening for the nut and the size of the nut itself is slightly larger for the Icon.
Top is Icon due to shorter grips to prevent pinch.
Top is Icon, bottom is Snap On. I can tell pretty quickly side by side. But that doesn’t take anything away from the Icon
Bottom snap on top HF great content Doc
The top is ICON, and the bottom is Snap-on® - grip differences and the ICON has a slight point around the belly of the pliers.
The bottom plier is Snap-on. You can always determine which is ICON because they tend to be thinner than the Snap-on in my opinion...
Snap-on is the lower one... with the grips touching. And with the handles in the same position the Icons jaws are not parallel when the Snap-ons are. To be parallel the Icons needs the handles to be slightly opened up more.
Top is icon.
The oil at the hinge gives it away.
Or the lack of on the other.
And the grips look too shiny on the top.
But they do sure loom identical
The top is the icon. The long nose part of the plier has the gap in them. I assume that's how they got around a patent design. It's just enough different. But I wish more of the reviewers would tall about that part. Does that mean it doesn't have full grip when pulling on items cause there's a bow on the nose? I have no idea, but it feels like it's being glossed over.
What gap are you referring to? Starting at the tip (far right), how far to down the nose (moving left) is this gap?
@@ArbitraryLifestyleI'm curious too, what exactly are you referring to?
Just looking at tiny details here and there and not having had much experience with either brand, I'll say ICON is top and Snap-On is bottom. The difference especially stands out in the handles.
The flats on the rivet head are a giveaway that the bottom ones are the original pliers, and the top ones are the POS knockoffs.
Yeah I'm sure that's their downfall....no tiny little flats on a rivet!😅🤦🏻♂️
Snap-on is the bottom one because it has the coating to high up. Thanks Doc
Top is Icon. Bottom is Snap On based on the aggressive shape of the bottom of the positioning cut off.
Trick question. They’re both Snap-on. 😂
I thought about doing that, but didn't.
@lastbesttool The handles give it away, but I’m really curious why Snap-on isn’t suing for patent infringement. I think your comment in a previous video, regarding Harbor Freight/Icon knowing where the bodies are buried, was really insightful. 👍🏻
Such is the woefull state of Snap on's quality control on their plier products, it could well be two 'same but different' Snap on products.
I thought about that but they are definitely ever-so-slightly different
They may have a utility patent on the three-position design, but that only helps so much. Prior art may be an issue if they want to defend the patent in court.
Just remember crescent wrenches used to be exclusive to "Crescent" tools. And, you probably call tissues in a box kleenex, another branded name.
I'm thinking the top is icon, in my experience the HF dip has a slightly shinier finish than snap ons, but it could just be a trick of the light. what makes me a little more sure is that the handles are more round on the top and snap ons usually have a more square-ish profile to the dip
I can tell you that compared to my normal slip joint icon the grips have changed slightly I think they're working on improving their formulation
ICON on top. The slightly larger top crosshatch section is a dead giveaway!
No pinching on the handles.
That rounded style of the upper pair of pliers is something that I havent seen personally from SO or HF on the Snap On clones so far.
i can tell the teeth are sharper
From just what is shown the top is icon because lighting reflection shows the difference in handles
Bottom is Snappy easy to tell. Grips are longer, and the forged metal has less texture.
Hello again, Doc
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 To answer your question, I can't tell the difference. Stay safe and warm. Again thank you 👌
The grip is the only thing that gives it away.
the rubber grips go up too far on the snap on and hit each other when you try to use them in position 3. The ICON also has glue/epoxy inside of the rubber grips. ICON on the top
HF is the top, the handles are thinner and the rubber is lower on the handle.
Feel like these would actually be easier to compare when closed
An extreme close-up of the talon grip surface would be revealing.
Bottom is snap on. Can definitely tell by the beam on the handle. Have plenty of snap on pliers. Can tell it immediately
What's a handle beam?
Top is the icon cuz I see a little area less finished all the way by the three-point joint and the bottom one the handles look a little wider at the beginning before the crip was added
I figured the top were snap on because of the thicker grip coating
Bottom is Snap-on. The rivet is more squared off.
Should have shown the patent description to see what is so unique about Snap-on's patent.
Top is Icon and bottom is Snap-On. It's the thickness of the handles.
Top is icon. The handles are similar across all their hand tools.
But I had to compare for the price.

bottom is the snap on because the red handles are hitting each other
Do you think snap on is getting a cut from these copies?
Nope
Top is Icon. The dip is lower on the handles.
The ICON has a more of a gap when closed due to a slight curve and the SnapOn is straighter. I've never even seen either in person but I've watched enough videos to know the top is the ICON lol
Also, the grips on the handles are higher on the snap on causing them to touch when fully closed.
Icon on top.
Snap On below.
Grip length.
You can see the dia of the position holes are different.
Top is icon. I can tell by the grip texture and color difference
Top Icon
Bottom is SO. Icons grips are shorter than SO
That's the patent. Expires July 30, 2029.
I believe it's a patent for the multi position slip joint as opposed to the needle nose aspect.
So this isn't any more treading on its toes than the non needle nose triple slip joint.
Bottom is Snap On.
Top is Icon.
Bottom is snap on, the top is icon
Top is icon because the tip is slightly longer
Bottom is Snap On, it’s the handles
As long as my tool dealer stops by my ship and warranties my brokers, that’s what I care about. I’m more than willing to pay the difference for the service I get.
Top ICON
Top looks cheaper so must be Icon.
The top is Icon, bottom is SO. I assume everyone will disagree with me.
Only looking on my phone, I’d tell by the smaller grips Snap one bottom
Top is icon. I know they handle texture.
They could be paying for the rights to use the design. Could be that simple.
Bottom is snapon because handles are thicker...my guess
(Doc, take note of the increased engagement your daily tool video receives when it goes live at a reasonale hour. Just sayin' 🤷🏽♂️)
Does it really make a difference?
@lastbesttool According to other RUclipsrs that are into the YT algorithm meta, yes.
Personally, I'd just like to enjoy the daily LBT vid and get to bed before 11pm PST 😅 (although having a more active comment section closer to the time of posting does facilitate a better discussion imo)
There are a lot of unenforceable patents out there. ICON may be betting this is one of them.
The bottom is the Snap-On. You can tell by the thickness of the upper portions of the metal grips along with the texture and shine of the grips themselves. Also, if they were closed, you could tell by the space between the jaws.
I don't know about the patent necessarily I feel like there are other Brands like tsunoda that have triple slip joint pliers might have even seen one or two with four position ones
I would say there's more deviation with these Talon grips then the original slip joint model icon made.
Yes. Easy tell: handle width near the head (SnapOn is wider).
What caught my eye was how far they dip the handles
*They're both Knipex pliers!*
👌🏻🤣🤣😂🤣
I'm saying the top is Icon because the handles are more shiny than snappys more matte finish on theirs on the bottom. Otherwise theres very minimal differences in a few spots. I'm gonna have to go drop #24.99 on the new Icons in a few weeks when all the hype calms down!
Top Icon
Top is icon fluffy spongy grips give it away. The finish on the joint rivet is worse too for icon.
When is someone going to test the quality and durability of the steel instead of talking about how similar they look?
TTC will come to the rescue with some kind of testing
Top is the HF. You can tell by the handles (HF is brighter and glossier). Also the wear marks on the slip joint. Both quality tools, but having owned the LN47ACF I will never not buy Snap On
Top snap on bottom icon.
Bottom is the Snapon
Top is Snapon the have a deeper grove on the tips
Bottom is the icon
Bottom are the snap on the grips come up higher.
The ones on top are the icon
Icon = top and Snap On = bottom
Top is icon
Top Snap on
Bottom is Snap on
Top is SO.
Icon top
Snap-on is the bottom.
Can only tell because of the handles
'Patented three-position slip joint' ....it doesn't say the patent is Snap on's own intellectuall property. Patented yes, but patented by another company a very long time ago, so long ago any original ip rights have expired. That's why Icon are able to freely use the joint, they aren't copying Snap on, the are copying the same original patent Snap on are copying.
Yeah I highly doubt this 3 hole adjustability is something they just created. I've seen cheap 3 hole adjustable pliers long before these were thought of.
Bottom Snap-on
Top is Icon
We only know that top is icon because Doc taught us about the grip difference.
right, all the people commenting on the video like they are geniuses for explaining to the difference between them to tell which is which, acting light doc didn’t tell them.
top is snappy
Top is SnapOn
Bottom one is snap on
Ikon on top
Top is icon. Grips give it away
how does HF get away with this crap ? or are they expecting sales to just generate enough to cover the cost of the lawsuit ?
They're different enough to get away with not being an exact copy I'd say
Should have covered the handles.
You are all wrong! Doc is the Icon!
Oh, give us a hard one.. NEXT
Top icon bottom snap on
