I am not a professional but I watch your tutorials religiously since I come from a country where a lot of building have collapsed due to poor construction. THANKS MIKE! JUST WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW! I USED PORTLAND ON A SMALL STEP GOING OUT MY SIDE DOOR. I WANTED TO RAISE THE FRONT PART UP JUST A LITTLE, THAT PART WORKED GREAT. BUT THE BACK PART NEAR THE HOUSE I FEATHERED IT SMOOTH, THAT PEELED OFF JUST A LITTLE, A FOUR INCH SPOT. LOWES DID NOT HAVE CEMENT ALL, NOW I SEE HOME DEPOT DOES HAVE IT. DUH!

Mr.Mike at 3:18 you say you look at Mortar rapid set as cement now??? what the length of time it will last then crumble ??? i used some mortar to patch my steps on my porch and guess what it fell apart after 8 years,,,, I just don't remember what type of mortar mix i used 8 years ago. ,, and today i go to home depot for portland mix and sand... and gravel rocks tiny rocks. but i know it is Mortar mix because i installed it and it is very light weight like a sponge or a seat cushion material that you took from your brothers car seat when he was not looking, Haha... or grabbing car seat cushion material in your neighbors trash... Haha... i just love all your videos and this one is just Another Great Video that i have learned to make a groove in old cement with a grinder and i do have 2 of those grinding disc already never use them but will now thank you. and i love the way you made those cement wood forms to hold new cement .. stay healthy Mr. Mike.... make more new video each week ... THX...

Surprisingly easy fix for what appeared to be a major problem. Expected you would paint it with Portland as part of prior prep to assure patch would positively adhere.

Hi Mike Haduck thank you for posting this, i learn from every video you post, that I watched.
To eliminate “honey comb” take your brick trowel and slide it back and forth between the concrete and the 2x4 form, several times, this will set the stones in the mix to edge way better, because it takes the voids out along the edge of the pad/ newly placed concrete.

Since watching your video series Mike I've been using the Mortar Mix much more.
Used to apply fast curing concretes but, in my short experience with the
Rapid Set products, they work better. Thank you for the benefit of your
talent and experience. I also think diamond blades and grinding wheels
are one of God's gifts to masons and contractors.

The last slab I did I took your advice. Screw the rebar and made my slab an inch thicker with the money. Time will tell baby. No crack after first year naturally.

I just finished and old pitted porch and was going to stain it before sealing it. I seen deck paint but I wasn't sure. I'm going with a walnut acrylic deck and siding stain. Thanks Mike.

i was watch Mortar Mix sales videos and it said a lot of great info on Mortar mix and the types of mix for sale and the uses of it. i remember one part of the video about the great mortar mix for overhead jobs on a bridge and how it will not sag and fall apart it will hold together and not sag which is important to me for i do overhead repair. and how some types of Mortar mix is super strong for bridge rebar install and large bolts install super strong Mortar Mix ... you should do a video on Mortar Mix uses, just say`n

I remember the first time me and a buddy worked with rapid set for some repairs... lessons were learned that day. It doesn’t have the same working time of concrete. When they say rapid set they mean “rapid set”.

My dads porch has 4 x 6 solid blocks under his porch top and they are all cracking. He replaced them all about 10 years ago. Are they cracking because he put a mortar joint on the top of them which attaches it to the porch top.
If we redo them should we not put mortar on the top of the block so its no longer attached to the porch top? Thanks I appreciate your videos and time makeing them.

Mike, what about “tapcons”? Always see other RUclips patch advice saying to use tapcons. Is cutting in with grinder just as good for grabbing? Those tapcons are really expensive. So it would be nice to use them less.

Great video Mike. I have to do some patch work at my mother’s home in Hazleton. Every joint in the cement walkway is splayed open. Hey mike, I started building a porch with blue stone top and two columns and one step. My question is should I put the blue stone down first, then build the two columns atop of it? Or build the columns off the footer and cut the bluestone around them. Thanks for your help and videos.

Those "oysters" in the cement against the form board can be avoided by sliding your trowel up and down between the form and the concrete while you're filling the form.

is it true that a control joint should be 1/4 the depth of the slab ??? and on a 4'' deep slab a control joint should be every 10 feet ???

Hi John, I dont think there is a standard debt I usually go 1 inch and a half, to make sure and control joints as many as I think necessary, for me the more the better, I don't want call backs thanks, mike

Damn man that sucks ...lumps are definitely user error ...without being there it's hard to tell what you did wrong I'm guessing a better/faster drill would have gotten those lumps out but that is definitely your issue also next time get it smoother with the squeegee and let it sit a little while before you use the broom on it
