People often make fun of Nicolas Cage's acting style, but for movies where you need a character who is over the top, ridiculous, or insane it works out well.
He's a very talented actor, he just got massively in debt and had to be in a bunch of terrible films. He is amazing in Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas
You missed my favorite joke of the movie, when Dracula shows up to Renfield’s apartment Renfield acts surprised as to how he got in but then he looks back and notices a mat that says “welcome” in front of the door
Honestlyyy, when Renfield screams at the guy from group not to welcome Dracula in, it finally hit me why he stared at the welcome mat. It was a nice GENTLE reference and it was beautifully done!
The bug thing is actually a canon part of the source material. In the Dracula book, Renfield is a patient in a mental asylum who claims that he will get his masters' powers, if he consumes the life of other beings. He starts with bugs but later on escalates to mice and kittens
*Apparently that Elvis guy don't know shit about Dracula...book, penny dreadfuls, movies...he doesn't have a clue ! The direct reference to Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi at the beginning can't be more obvious, I mean these are Bela Lugosi scenes played by Nicholas Cage...Our Elvis guy thinks this is a reference to Murnau's Nosferatu...a movie shot 40 years earlier !!!*
i kind of wished you talked a bit more about nicholas hoults performance, he does a very good job playing a character who we have to feel sorry for, his comedic delivery is very great, he manages to make me care for awkwafinas character solely because of how much he cares for her and his chemistry with nic cage is amazing, they really manage to make this movie work and you can tell that both of them really cared, i hope they will work again in other projects because i really enjoyed the two nics together
Yes! That’s exactly what I like about Nicolas Hoult but wasn’t able to describe. He has such great on screen chemistry with anyone he works with no matter how seemingly ridiculous. Awkwafina’s character was tolerable in this movie because the way he treated her gave me a fraction of the feels as when he played Nux in Mad Max and was so damn sweet and caring with Capable.
It wasn't just cheerleaders. Dracula said something like, "a loving couple, some nuns, or a busload of cheerleaders." Renfield sits down to eat, looks up, and spots a loving couple, some nuns, and a busload of cheerleaders pulling into the parking lot and entering the restaurant.
One of my favorite scenes is when Renfield asks the scorched Dracula, "are you alright?" and Dracula has been reduced to a match head with eyes and simply says, "NO."
I really liked renfield, I found all the old timey vampire rules to be hilarious such as the welcome mat letting Dracula in and such. I also really liked the comic book style violence just being so over the top and comical. The only part that kinda killed it for me was the gang being kind of surface level imo. Nicholas cage as Dracula was a god tier choice and we need more of it. Overall a good movie and I will rewatch it for sure.
@@Lawrence_Talbotman a lot. She was irritating in every scene she was in. But damn Hoult and Nic Cage, as well as the side characters carried it. But damm Awkwafina is super annoying.
Small funfact: the flashback-sequence isn't only inspired by old vampire-movies, these scenes are literally taken out of the 1931-Dracula movie with Bela Lugosi, just with the two Nic(h)olas'es taking over the spot of him and Dwight Frye. It's pretty sweet and one of the reason I love this movie way more than I should, it really feels like someone appreciates the old universal monster-flicks the same way I do.
This plot has its holes. Every story does... But that scene in which Dracula tries to turn his abuse upon Renfield in his apartment was nothing short of tragic. Seeing that process of someone who's spent years and years beating you down, only to turn around and tell you that it's your fault is terrifyingly accurate. Narcissists and abusers will always either deny or rationalize their abuse. This movie isn't amazing in any traditional sense, but it's incredibly relevant and impactful to a lot of people who have had relationships like this. Whether it be with romantic partners or even parents.

Nicolas Cage is honestly one the best actors out there, even if he's in a bad movie he gives it his all. And when he's in a good movie, he makes it amazing
I love the trend of making movies specifically for Nick Cage, I don't know if this is the case here but it feels like it for sure, he is his own genre, amazing.
My friend and I went on opening night, and it's a shame the theater wasn't even full because the whole audience had a blast. So much fun camp. It was exactly what I expected it to be, but even better. The nods to Bela Lugosi and the original story about the character Renfield from the book Dracula are amazing too.
I've been patiently waiting for a little over a year to see you talk about this movie. I had the privilege of working on this production and constantly thought, "Man, I can't wait til Elvis sees this!" Renfield was one of the very few productions where I had fun while working. I LOVED working with my camera crew and still work with some of them to this day; I even got to operate the camera for the fight scene between Cage and Awkwafina. Nick Hoult, Nic Cage, and Awkwafina were some of the nicest actors I've ever met on set, especially Hoult. Cage is incredibly down to earth and humble, (not many actors are like that on set, so it was refreshing). I've heard from my coworkers that a lot of content was edited out of the final cut, which is a bummer. I unfortunately haven't had the time to watch the movie for myself just yet cause my life is currently a mess, but I intend on watching it soon. I'm so glad that Renfield is getting so much praise!
Reinfeild still being alive after the events of the 1931 movie implies that he just has to get up from below the stairs and walk it off and I just think that’s fucking hilarious
i also like how the movie (for some reason) tries to retcon renfield becoming a familiar as being his own decision. yeah ok, i guess someone who is drugged, hypnotized, and driven literally insane is perfectly capable of making their own decisions.
I went to the theatre not knowing what to expect and I was blown away by how much I loved this movie. So funny and good, it really deserved so much more love but I think it was just a poor time of year for a spooky movie release? It’s like a perfect movie
I love so much how this is canonically a continuation of the 1933 bela lugosi dracula movie, for that one you see they do only eyes illuminated by a slit of light and I was happy with that. Cage doesn't just play Dracula he plays Bela Lugosi's Count Dracula.

@@angelacruz5868 I feel like I'm being a nitpicky bitch, but I just have to say that Hoult's character, Tyler, wasn't really a reviewer (that was the snooty lady), he just considered himself a connoisseur and looked down on everyone else for not "knowing" as much about cooking or not "appreciating the experience" as he did. The flashbacks aren't just reminiscent of old vampire movies. They are actually shots taken directly from the 1931 version of Dracula, with the faces of the two Nicks superimposed over those of the original actors (Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye). Also, eating bugs may seem silly, but that is what Renfield did in the novel, as well as the 1931 and 1992 movies.
This movie is SO, so good. My guess is the not so positive reviews are just people whose humor wasn't the target audience. This movie hit so many marks for me. It was so funny.
@@oneoranota I can see that. I felt like the humor wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. Also, Nic Cage isn't everyone's favorite. He's very dramatic, but I personally love it.
Yeah it just seems like critics these days are just hateful people who would rather just destroy the movie by just giving them bad reviews just for the sake of money
There is something you got wrong here Elvis, in the scene where Renfield first gets blamed for the massacre of the therapy group, her assumption that he was responsible actually makes more sense than you give credit for. You forget that before this, she watched him annihilate a group of armed gangsters, while doing stuff like chopping a dude's arms clean off with a dinner plate, and impaling a guy with a table. She's already seen Renfield do seemingly superhuman things before this point, so it makes sense for her to assume that he could massacre the church group with his bare hands.
Going into this movie, I didn't expect to GENUINELY enjoy it nearly as much as I did. Renfield is one of my favorite classic literature characters, so the relief I felt when this was good was indescribable 🤣
If I had a nickel for every Vampire movie that Elvis reviewed and loved on this channel, I’d have two nickels, which is not a lot, but is weird that it happened twice
I like Jeremy Jahns' review of this movie, saying that it's like they had two scripts, a vampire movie, and a mobster movie, that were 45 minutes worth each, and wanting to make a whole movie, they just mashed them together. 1 + 1 = Renfield. Your review seemed to validate that. Great video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
It just hit me Elvis has never seen the original Universal Dracula before. The opening backstory scenes are almost shot for shot scenes from the og movie.
Deadass Elvis your so wholesome. This Movie about the Narcissistic abuse hits different if You've been abused by a narcissist. Like I felt for Renfield on a whole ass personal level man. And those scenes where he's freeing himself and realizing he can go no contact with Dracula were amazing honestly.
I couldn't stop laughing during this movie and got teary-eyed during the more emotional parts like the codependent abusive relationship between Dracula and Renfield. There were also a bunch of nods to the novel and the Bela Legosi version. Superimposed scenes foe the flashback, Redfield eating bugs, the Lobo family being the wolves who Dracula had control over and were his "children of the night" (tho I kept thinking they were gonna introduce the family being dormant werewolves or something with all the wolf imagery). Loved this movie!! Haven't had so much fun with a movie in a long time before this one :)
I still can''t shake off the feeling this movie should've come out 10 years ago. The writing, jokes in particular, the plot, even editing, like it BELONGS to 2010-2014 era. And Nic Cage is the best, he delivers every time!
Renfield was great, I found it very amusing and I think all the actors had a lot of fun XD. Also Rebecca doesn't take him back to her place- Renfield brings her to his place. She passes out. It also makes sense that all the bodies would still be in the gym - her partner was supposed to call in the murders, and instead he called the Lobos and they came to get Renfield- not to secure the scene. They were likely all left there, and since all the cops were basically reassigned to deal with Rebecca and Renfield, I doubt any family members were called either. It was 1 or 2 days between the murders and Dracula dying it seems.
i will say as someone who has recently read dracula, renfeild eating bugs canonically makes sense for his character, as that is an actual plot point within the book. it does sound ridiculous if you dont have the context for sure, but having it makes it cool i think.
I’M SO GLAD YOU COVERED THIS FILM I’m so in love with it. I wanted to see it a third time in cinemas but an employee recognised me when I watched it a second time
Getting recognised in the theater is cool. Roll with it and just say Hi when you go in for that 3rd time 😊 (I've been there, used to work in a movie theater and also go to the movies like 1-2 times a week 😅)
in the original dracula text, renfield in almost every moment we see him is imprisoned and obsessed with dracula and eating bugs especially flys his power is a reference to that yk
Wiccan Tumblr + a cocaine-salt circle is fucking HILARIOUS, dude, what are you talking about? I feel like Nic Cage could've suggested that himself. That's goddamn genius. Also, bonus points for them REALLY finishing the job with that creative-as-hell "no seriously, we're making SURE he's dead" over the top body disposal. They just subverted the trope that spawned a thousand terrible sequels and which everyone *despises.* This movie sounds even more awesome from hearing about that. I have to watch it now!
I love/despise how many obvious universal and hammer references are in this video that he clearly doesn't know anything about because he's just making content about whatever, he clearly knows nothing about classic horror
I got little buzzed drinking a margarita thing at Walmart. Watching this was a trip. I’ll definitely have to watch this movie eventually. Nic Cage is a national treasure.
The beginning of the movie when it goes to the flashbacks, they actually recreated scenes from the original Dracula’s movie from 1930s. So technically this is a sequel to the original Dracula lol. Fucking awesome
One night I was feeling upset and decided to see a horror movie in the theatre. My choices were Beau is Afraid, Evil Dead Rise, or Renfield (although...it isn't actually horror). Renfield was absolutely the best choice I could have made
Nick Cage is a legend because he ALWAYS gives 100% in anything he does. Big budget movie or bill paying low tear movie he never phones it in and that’s why people like him. He does the best he can every time and people feel and respect that.
Hahaha when you played the “You know who I AM” it cut to an ad that started with “I’m chef(something or another)” and it was perfectly inline tone and cadence
I genuinely appreciate your Nic Cage enthusiasm. I’ve been a fan of his un-ironically for a long time and no one around me agrees with that sentiment. This movie did have its issues but it was such a fun time!
I watched this movie expecting to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised and actually found myself genuinely laughing many times. It's got a good plot, characters feel MUCH better than a lot of other "filler" characters in other movies. 10/10, will recommend.
I think what's really telling (for me, at least) as to how great of a choice Nicolas Cage was for Dracula is that I hadn't even considered his connection to Vampire's Kiss until you brought it up, despite it having some of my favorite over-acting moments from him. Even taking that iconic role out, his style of over-acting simply just works for a character like Dracula; he's an immortal blood-hungry monster with an ego the size of god, and he's been almost completely forgotten about in the modern day? It only makes sense that a guy like that is going to go the extra mile to make people remember him.
okay, i'll admit this: i got WAYYYY too overly attached to renfield BUT YOU CAN'T BLAME ME FOR IT he's just an antisocial guy in a toxic relationship. i kinda saw myself in him. i......i just wanted to hug him. and him trying to stand up to dracula in his apartment just hurt me physically cuz people like him won't listen. but he got him. HE FUCKIN GOT HIM BY THE END AND I WAS HERE FOR IT! idk i just felt like a proud mom during it UwU
I haven’t really seen anyone mention it yet either but the b&w shots at the beginning were recreations of scenes from the original Bela Lugosi Dracula, which is why they gave the vibes of classic vampire movies because they like. They were

Yeah it's good to see other people actually appreciate this movie
My guess is that the bad reviews are probably from people who did not enjoy the movie.
Me too me too
What a performance by Cage. You get all his nuances in this film.
Pretty sure Nicolas just wandered on set and he just went along with it as himself.
They did the whole Dracula's servant eating bugs thing in this movie "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" staring Leslie Nielsen.
The fact that Nicolas Cage gets to play one of his dream roles and also gets to be a real vampire.
i will say as someone who has recently read dracula, renfeild eating bugs canonically makes sense for his character, as that is an actual plot point within the book. it does sound ridiculous if you dont have the context for sure, but having it makes it cool i think.
I’M SO GLAD YOU COVERED THIS FILM I’m so in love with it. I wanted to see it a third time in cinemas but an employee recognised me when I watched it a second time
Getting recognised in the theater is cool. Roll with it and just say Hi when you go in for that 3rd time 😊
(I've been there, used to work in a movie theater and also go to the movies like 1-2 times a week 😅)
B&W Nick Cage as Dracula actually looks really good in the nostalgia of Bela Lugosi.
Nicholas Cage being in this movie is the only thing that could make up for the fact that Aquafina is in it
This was his best purposeful comedic role in years.
Everything Cage does is purposeful you elongated hydra!
Nooooo
See it like an 90's comedy movie. Lightfooted and perfect for an chilling evening. Such movies are rare today.
in the original dracula text, renfield in almost every moment we see him is imprisoned and obsessed with dracula and eating bugs especially flys his power is a reference to that yk
We need a sequel that focuses more on Dracula's history.
I wanna see Dracula and Renfield at the height of Dracula's reign.
That was made in 1931
@@child_devourer6946 Unfortunately not with Nic Cage. 8(
Nicks gotten so far, from being a schizophrenic who thought he was a vampire, to being *THE* vampire
The black and white flashbacks were shot-for-shot recreations of scenes from 1931's Dracula.
I love/despise how many obvious universal and hammer references are in this video that he clearly doesn't know anything about because he's just making content about whatever, he clearly knows nothing about classic horror
it's actually the real movie footage, they just swapped the actor's faces around. The effects here are amazing. I could barely tell.
@@Chainsaw_Bunny nice
I would say this movie was directed pretty badly, but Mr. Cage still put everything he had into it. He's a legend.
I got little buzzed drinking a margarita thing at Walmart. Watching this was a trip. I’ll definitely have to watch this movie eventually. Nic Cage is a national treasure.
I see what you did there
13:44 How did you not mention the welcome matt joke, liteerally the funniest vampire joke i'vee ever seen
Nicolas Cage is a goddamn national treasure ✨
I’m Gonna steal the Niclaration of IndeCagence
I love that Nic finally got what he wanted. One of the characters he wanted to play was Dracula. Pretty great, just to see that
The beginning of the movie when it goes to the flashbacks, they actually recreated scenes from the original Dracula’s movie from 1930s. So technically this is a sequel to the original Dracula lol. Fucking awesome
Nick Cage never ceases to amaze us.
One night I was feeling upset and decided to see a horror movie in the theatre. My choices were Beau is Afraid, Evil Dead Rise, or Renfield (although...it isn't actually horror). Renfield was absolutely the best choice I could have made
Evil Dead Rise is fire tho
I really liked evil dead rise
@@firstlast9846 movie was so boring to me.
@@Supl3xcity yeah I don't understand the hype at all
Evil Dead Rise is a fun ass movie. You should see it.
Idk how I’ve never seen that Juni Ito Art in your background but I love him he’s so talented
Aquafina is inspiring. Showing that anybody can be in big movies. Regardless if they can act or not.
Nick cage has yellow fever perhaps that is why she is in the movie
@@hoze1235 SIDE. EYE.
yes because bad actors have never existed before her.
@@hoze1235 Enough yellow fever to like Aquafina? That is a terminal illness.
I think they just wanted an unattractive girl to avoid the whole romance thing
Every time that I’m taking out the trash, I’m thinking “Renfield, you bring me trash” , 😂
Nick Cage is a legend because he ALWAYS gives 100% in anything he does. Big budget movie or bill paying low tear movie he never phones it in and that’s why people like him. He does the best he can every time and people feel and respect that.
It finally comes full circle. Nic is a vampire.
I needed more of him in this. He was just so perfectly camp!!!!!
Finally someone who recognizes genius lol renfield was honestly so campy and fun it reminded me of the original evil dead
I just love how obvious it was how Cage enjoyed this role
I saw this movie the other day - absolutely adored it! Not a huge Nic Cage fan but he was perfectly cast in this ❤️
Hahaha when you played the “You know who I AM” it cut to an ad that started with “I’m chef(something or another)” and it was perfectly inline tone and cadence
I genuinely appreciate your Nic Cage enthusiasm. I’ve been a fan of his un-ironically for a long time and no one around me agrees with that sentiment. This movie did have its issues but it was such a fun time!
I can tell Nic Cage is having a hell of a fun time playing Dracula
What a perfect way to start the day with good ol’ nick and Elvis. Glad your back man!
THIS MOVIE IS SO GOOD THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS
I LOVED this movie. I personally liked the ending. The Wiccan Tumblr line made me crack up
I watched this movie expecting to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised and actually found myself genuinely laughing many times.
It only makes sense that a guy like that is going to go the extra mile to make people remember him.
okay, i'll admit this:
i got WAYYYY too overly attached to renfield BUT YOU CAN'T BLAME ME FOR IT
he's just an antisocial guy in a toxic relationship. i kinda saw myself in him. i......i just wanted to hug him. and him trying to stand up to dracula in his apartment just hurt me physically cuz people like him won't listen. but he got him. HE FUCKIN GOT HIM BY THE END AND I WAS HERE FOR IT!
idk i just felt like a proud mom during it UwU
Randomly decided to watch this movie with friends without knowing much about it and was pleasantly surprised with how much fun it was.
This movie was amazing I loved the use of practical and cgi use in this
I haven’t really seen anyone mention it yet either but the b&w shots at the beginning were recreations of scenes from the original Bela Lugosi Dracula, which is why they gave the vibes of classic vampire movies because they like. They were
This was such a hoot to watch slightly buzzed in the theater lmao. Excited that Elvis is covering it!
Nicholas cage is on a roll lately. Pig was brilliant. Renfield was stupid fun. And now we have dream scenario, which might be my favourite cage movie yet
The black and white scenes they used was actually from a really old vampire movie they just swapped the faces of the actors around.
I just remembered Cage was in a wizard movie once...The Sorcerer's Apprentice, that's what it's called!
The mitch joke is proof that Elvis really needs to be in charge of a movie
This movie fully exceeded my expectations when i watched it. I was blown away and loved it
Was there ever a time when Nicolas Cage *wasn’t* awesome?
The critics can suck it, this movie was amazing
Yesssss new Elvis the Ayylien, AND Nic Cage? Hell yeah
YOU’RE BACK. JUST LIKE NICK CAGE. AND WITH SOMETHING GOOD. This is just great.
Was waiting for this review to happen nic cage did a fantastic job in this
I'm a simple girl. If I watched a movie and had a great time watching it, it's a great movie.
Nic Cage is just magic, he can turn even the shittiest movie into something at least watchable🤷🏻♀️
I love that the flashbacks at the beginning are more or less just recreations of the Bella Legosi Dracula Movies.
The first time I heard Nicolas Cage as Dracula, I laugh like it was a joke.... But after seeing this damn, he is Dracula all along.
