  • In this Bonsai video we are repotting a Cedar of Lebanon. This tree was styled last year from a piece of garden centre material.
The methods in which I repot this tree are pretty straightforward so any beginner to Bonsai should be able to follow along! With Cedar of Lebanon, it is important not to remove too much root at once as it may stress the tree too much. As a general rule, you do not want to remove any more than one third of the roots at any one time of repotting. This is a similar approach to a Juniper or Pine Bonsai.
I cover various aspects including the tools used, techniques for removing old soil without harming the delicate roots, and strategies for pruning roots to encourage optimal Nebari development over time. I selected a larger pot for promoting rapid growth and development, detailing the preparation process for the pot and the specific soil mix. I discuss methods for addressing issues such as inverse taper and offer insights into using Lime Sulphur to enhance and preserve the deadwood feature, elevating the overall aesthetic appeal of the tree.
The Cedar of Lebanon as a species is great for beginners because it's resilient, forgiving of mistakes, and responds well to basic techniques like pruning and wiring. Its compact foliage and small needles make it visually appealing, and its relatively fast growth rate allows you to see progress quickly! Overall, it's an ideal choice for those new to bonsai who want an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Great teaching video Adam, very useful to people starting their journey into the Nobel art of bonsai, I have not used Cedar of Lebanon so I can’t comment on how it will be styled by you in future videos, shame about the inverse taper, I wonder if it is more likely to have been grafted badly. You are helping a lot people Adam so keep doing what you do.

Do you have schefflera arboricola (umbrella trees) in your region? If so, I’d love a video on repotting / care to help mine!🌴🌳

Awesome stuff! Learning a ton from your channel!
Question about thickening the trunk. You made a vertical motion for the future cuts. Is there a reason for this over making cuts horizontally? The growth above seems to have a horizontal "ring" pattern, so I was curious if vertical cuts might thicken the the trunk as desired, but leave a different texturing to the tree. Hopefully that makes sense 😅.

Nice one Adam, love the shari. Always wanted a cedar of lebanon when i was younger then slipped my mind for years when i went a bit mad for acers and bougainvillea.. your vid inspired me to check local nursery stock. Am I right in thinking that's a cedrus libani?
