What amuses me is that very few, if any, of the people involved in these 1950s Pauls could have imagined they would end up being played like this.
It's always funny to think about how much of the 50s and 60s guitar tech was built with the intention of putting out the purest, cleanest tone. I think Les Paul wanted his guitar to put out something like a sine wave. The amps were getting bigger so that the sound could stay clean at high volume. And hardly any players seemed to use the gear the way the manufacturers intended. The Jazzmaster got made for jazz musicians, who hardly used it and preferred the Jaguar. Meanwhile the Jazzmaster found a niche decades later in noisy music like My Bloody Valentine or Dinosaur, Jr. It's just interesting that Fender, Gibson, etc. were totally out of sync with what players wanted, but their products were also totally irreplaceable for those same players. They just accidentally created the essential tools of ditorted rock playing while trying to craft the cleanest, most straight-ahead sound they could.
@@boeing_opal I suppose the one class of players who were employing a more aggressive, distorted sound at that time were the blues players; and it was from them that the rock players took their cue. The blues guys (and girls, thank you Sister Rosetta Tharpe) may have come upon such sounds by accident, if they could not afford bigger, 'better', amps.
@@promerops Yeah, I think the discovery of those sounds was pretty accidental at first. But once they were out there, people were chasing them big time. Sounds like there were a few players who found that damaged amps sounded good to them, and there were a good number afterward who would intentionally damage their speaker cones to imitate it.
👍🤘
@@boeing_opal The amps are way more important to the sound of rock than the guitars. Ted Nugent used a "jazzbox" gibson and made it rock, so did Steve Howe sometimes. Lots of players use fender solid bodies to play genres other than rock. But you're not likely to break out a marshall stack to play a country gig
Sounds incredible brother. I said it before and I’ll say it again, so glad that you decided to keep that Les Paul…
Les Paul Specials in general are really good guitars. Very versatile. Gotta get one with P90's though.
Can't imagine life without it now!👍🏻
@@MatthewScottmusic good cuz its def my fave of your collection haha
Yep that was a good call.
Matthew knows how to take a good risk buying sight unseen.
@@MatthewScottmusic which fuzz is that?
Man that just completely blew my mind!! Not only the awsome tone with the fuzz. But your playing is outstanding, so much emotion in this. Man, you have gotta get an album out!!
He's making one right now!
I'm trying, just hang in there a bit longer!✌🏻
@@MatthewScottmusic You owe it to the people!
@@bevo65 we're so happy we can hardly count
He is a really good singer.
I keep saying this each time he jams with that Special, they were meant for each other. I know he's a Strat guy (or thinks he's a Strat guy), but the tone of that guitar combined with his style of playing is a match made in heaven.
That pinch harmonic at 1:47 just gets me every time…. This tone is just unmatched.
It would be awesome to see Matthew Scott and Chris Buck Colab! In my view the next generation of guitar greats, in with Kingfish!
Hell yeah, though Oklahoma and England are pretty far
One of the best ideas I come across in a while
Totally what I thought, Chris Buck vibes for sure.
@@op-z well personally I think Matt has his own vibes and I dig that a lot, he is one of the blues rock player I take inspirations from \m/
Totally agree, and for those who haven’t seen Kingfish live he’s over the top! Some great playing and amazing tone here as usual! 👍
To die for tone, Matt you have it going on, when it comes to matching up old gear, that always sounds great, always look forward to your videos.
I'm glad the tone is translating😁✌🏻
@@MatthewScottmusic Hey mate, the cpl of times lve commented on ur channel, l get these "uve won a prize" things sent to me... It's just Ur name, but w/o the lozenge surrounding it. It's been up a few yrs too, just thought I'd point it out mate.
I'm reporting it. It's spam accounts. Unfortunately RUclips can't get it under control.
@@MatthewScottmusic Yeah mate, thought as much, the more that know the better.
I'll do same, til they get the idea!
Yo Matt. I’ve been a follower since you had a couple thousand followers and have seen your playing for years now. But dude. This is the best I’ve ever heard you sound. Absolutely perfect in every way. I have watched this 5x’s in a row.
Thanks so much Dan and thanks for having around for that long! Been a great ride!
I really hope you put this arrangement into a song......that sound is amazing man. I cant stop listening to it
This is the best sound, lead and solo I've heard in ages. I felt every note.
dude this is so freaking good it’s frustrating
You Matt, that single you have. Where you been is incredible
10 months on and i still regularly listen to this. Ive left a few comments on this over the last 10 months and here i go again. This is my favourite peice of music of all time. Thats saying something coming from a huge fan of SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Rory Gallagher, BB King, and list goes on and on. My only complaint is i wish it were longer. Mathew, in my opinion you are every bit as good as anyone past and present.
After 70 years I think it finally found its home. Sounds absolutely perfect. So glad you decided to save it and share it with us.
One of the best solos I've ever heard.
I agree with what some of the others have said . . . This is some of the best playing we’ve seen on your channel. It sounds expressive and original and fresh. Very tasteful!!!
This is the best I have ever heard you sound. Keep it coming!
Yah, I got to agree. Pretty creative.
Yes!! Absolutely the best I've heard him play. Incredible stuff!!
Amanzing huge sound and sweet at the same time. You, nik sevigny, phillipe sayce and simo.... All teaching the blues, the sound, the playabity, the sweet gear to speak the electrifying voice with music and passion. Amanzing musicians you All are.
Best tone on RUclips PERIOD
The million dollar tone!
Very tasteful playing as usual, really love your quieter lead-ins to your aggressive blues licks, its what got me hooked to your vids.
I am a 57 model myself ,
Yeeup August 57 build date .
I like the fat tone and ragged playing .
POWER SECTION DISTORTION IS THE KEY .
Get that power tube burning hot and the rectifier tube straining to keep up and you will understand .
92k views in 7 days. I've watched it countless times. Any chance of marathon 20 or minute version. I can't get enough of this. Absolutely brilliant.
Thanks Dave, a few people said they watched it multiple times. That inspires me so much!
@@MatthewScottmusic I would have to have watched it around 70 maybe even 100 or more times, I'm serious. It really is that good!! It would be fantastic if you could put up a longer version, I'd pay you for a longer version, I'm not joking. Seriously man, I think it is that good. Never has a peice of music moved me so much in my 55 years on this planet!!
2 years later and I still listen to this regularly, brilliant!!
Yet another Matthew Scott video featuring phenomenal playing and beautiful tone. Well done man! Still eagerly awaiting your debut!!
Not only is Matthew a great player but he also doesn’t make stupid “I love my life and everything on this earth” smiley faces when he plays. I am truly grateful for this!
For a guy who was hooked on Fenders for years, he sure seems to be enjoying the magic of that old Gibson!
Sweet! An old guitar inspiring an old school vibe.
fuzzed out gibson is the best sound ever, man
That sounds flat out stunning. Playing was great and absolutely suited the tone. Great work!
one of the best examples of blending major and minor I've ever seen
Good grief!!! Wicked tone and completely happening playing. That guitar has a magic sound, even on the cleaner parts, and mates up with that fuzz PERFECTLY!
Pure sweetness to my ears!
The early bit after kicking the fuzz in reminds me of Marc Ford, both the tone and the playing.
That's it brother.. That's the sound!!! Amazing😁
God thing that you keep that guitar. Your playing is awesome 👏
Hahaha! That cool little thing at the end!
I have a 56 Lespaul special just like that those P90’s sound great also without fuzz, very jazzy at the neck and rock n’ roll at the bridge …
I do dig that LP Special.
Thoroughly enjoyed the instrumental jam. And your playing style. Thanks Matthew. I’ll listen to this again and again.👍🏼✌🏼
You do an amazing job dialing in the classic Fender and Gibson tones.
Such a thick sound, amazing
Badass solo. True original
no one plays Rock like that anymore--GREAT-love it----
Just ... Amazing
No words to describe that tone, along with your soul. Damn....
I REALLY NEEDED THAT BROTHER! YOUR PLAYING SOOTHES MY PRECIOUS SOUL. BLESS YOUR HEART, THANK YOU MATTHEW!

Love it when I'm looking at my phone and you post a new video. Sweet pefection.
Man! That sound reminds me the band Free! So good.
Get auta here! I felt that in my spine. Wow!
I finally bought my first Gibson guitar, and it came in the mail today. It's a Gibson SG Special in Ebony with P90s. It has endless sustain and plays like a dream. I am so excited for it.
All my support from France ! Killer tone. Your album is wow ! Hat off !
The Mighty P90 with all that hound dog tone when done correctly will usually win your guitar shootout!
So much mojo around here !
That feeling and that gibson awesome
I’ve said this before. Your tone is unreal! So much soul man! Indefinitely have been playing more thank you 🙏🏻
pure magic.......take the applause,,,
I still listen to this regularly. It's so nice to just sit and chill and listen. I hope you record a longer version and put it on your album.
Crunchy AF! That is one sick LP!
Man, that tone is so killer! Thank you for sharing it with all of us. Please keep letting your heart pour out of you guitars, you have a special gift Matthew.
Man, you’re a really soulful player
I've been watching your channel now for a few years and if that masterpiece doesn't have a name it should be evolution because the evolution of your playing shows there. That old Gibson sounds great.
Wow. Those P90s with the fuzz are to live for! Great playing, bro! Thanks for sharing.
I so love P90s! 👍
I'm working on a P90s build for myself, and that project just got fast forwarded. Sweet sound.
Wow man, I've seen your videos but this one is another level.
Amazing job man.
Good God Almighty Matt ! This is serious stuff....I'm pushing 70 and I've not heard tone like that since the 70's, You nailed it man. Keep up the good work.
Wow what a tone
Beautiful. If I had a southern rock band I'd be trying to get Matt to play in it.
That tone is just HEAVENLY!!!
OMG its been awhile since I visited. That Les Paul sound fantastic, so dark and chunky! Nice job man!
That tone is heard in the soul, even if the notes pass through the ears. Bravo.
What an artist! Great job Matthew!
Saw the vid when you picked this guitar up and after the work you had commissioned it was totally worth it
I swear nearly every time I watch you demo a guitar… I exclaim “holy shit!” Out loud 😂
What a sound! I love this blues rock style🎸
the cleans are sublime too
Amazing! We don't hear enough of that sound out there...
Yes I did enjoy that!
jesus christ that's a cool guitar... phenomenal player too of course!
You guys did a great good bringing that old warrior back to life. What a Ripper...
sweet playing, Good production, your stuff is like a rustic essence of vintage instruments and rock and roll
First thing I saw this morning. Got my mind blown. I know the rest of the day will go brilliantly as I unbox my fuzz, an unexpected gift from two dear friends who I've known all my life
8 seconds in and I'm already enjoying
Jeebus… you kill it dude. Super inspiring!
The Sound is Huge ! Also your playing is killer ! Greetings from Germany
Wonderful Maybe the best solo I’ve heard. And I’m 61 😆
Man... this is heaven! No words can describe the feel as well as the sound of your guitar and amp does...
Bro, waou ! I already said this guitar was awesome, but man, with the fuzz, that was incredible! Keep this Gibson Les Paul forever mate, you’ve got the vibe with it, as if you both were connected. Keep it up 👍🏻🎸
Sounds amazing
Wow. Just wow.
that piece was absolutely amazing
That was a pleasant surprise (video just come through recommended) - very nice feel and wicked sound. 👍
That tone is just incredible.
I'm convinced--I'm going with P90s when I get a Les Paul!
Nice phrasing and grabbin some awesome notes and tone! Bro! That is your holy grail! Your go to for expression that cooks the groove! Solves the next move!! You got it!! Nice gear, you punched in the ponies and that ham-bone hit the hyper gear!!! Continue to cook bro!!! 👍🏻
You gave me chill man ! Awesome !
Jeeeeezus christ. Every video you've put out recently belongs in a museum of perfect guitar tone. Really next-level stuff.
Man, im from Brazil.. found your channel here somehow and it really changed my life.. im a huge fan of SRV and you are just like me.. im going to NY in september try to find my vintage fender stratocaster sunburst from 60’s. Your videos help me so much to learn about vintage gear.. and made me wanna be every day a better guitar player and deserve to play a fender like yours. Wish you well keep being amazing! Greetings from brazil
The people who made these LP's back in the day have no idea how ahead of time they were.
