It's always funny to think about how much of the 50s and 60s guitar tech was built with the intention of putting out the purest, cleanest tone. I think Les Paul wanted his guitar to put out something like a sine wave. The amps were getting bigger so that the sound could stay clean at high volume. And hardly any players seemed to use the gear the way the manufacturers intended. The Jazzmaster got made for jazz musicians, who hardly used it and preferred the Jaguar. Meanwhile the Jazzmaster found a niche decades later in noisy music like My Bloody Valentine or Dinosaur, Jr. It's just interesting that Fender, Gibson, etc. were totally out of sync with what players wanted, but their products were also totally irreplaceable for those same players. They just accidentally created the essential tools of ditorted rock playing while trying to craft the cleanest, most straight-ahead sound they could.
@@boeing_opal I suppose the one class of players who were employing a more aggressive, distorted sound at that time were the blues players; and it was from them that the rock players took their cue. The blues guys (and girls, thank you Sister Rosetta Tharpe) may have come upon such sounds by accident, if they could not afford bigger, 'better', amps.
@@promerops Yeah, I think the discovery of those sounds was pretty accidental at first. But once they were out there, people were chasing them big time. Sounds like there were a few players who found that damaged amps sounded good to them, and there were a good number afterward who would intentionally damage their speaker cones to imitate it.
@@boeing_opal The amps are way more important to the sound of rock than the guitars. Ted Nugent used a "jazzbox" gibson and made it rock, so did Steve Howe sometimes. Lots of players use fender solid bodies to play genres other than rock. But you're not likely to break out a marshall stack to play a country gig
I keep saying this each time he jams with that Special, they were meant for each other. I know he's a Strat guy (or thinks he's a Strat guy), but the tone of that guitar combined with his style of playing is a match made in heaven.
Man that just completely blew my mind!! Not only the awsome tone with the fuzz. But your playing is outstanding, so much emotion in this. Man, you have gotta get an album out!!

Yo Matt. I’ve been a follower since you had a couple thousand followers and have seen your playing for years now. But dude. This is the best I’ve ever heard you sound. Absolutely perfect in every way. I have watched this 5x’s in a row.
I agree with what some of the others have said . . . This is some of the best playing we’ve seen on your channel. It sounds expressive and original and fresh. Very tasteful!!!
Amanzing huge sound and sweet at the same time. You, nik sevigny, phillipe sayce and simo.... All teaching the blues, the sound, the playabity, the sweet gear to speak the electrifying voice with music and passion. Amanzing musicians you All are.
10 months on and i still regularly listen to this. Ive left a few comments on this over the last 10 months and here i go again. This is my favourite peice of music of all time. Thats saying something coming from a huge fan of SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Rory Gallagher, BB King, and list goes on and on. My only complaint is i wish it were longer. Mathew, in my opinion you are every bit as good as anyone past and present.
Not only is Matthew a great player but he also doesn’t make stupid “I love my life and everything on this earth” smiley faces when he plays. I am truly grateful for this!
@@MatthewScottmusic I would have to have watched it around 70 maybe even 100 or more times, I'm serious. It really is that good!! It would be fantastic if you could put up a longer version, I'd pay you for a longer version, I'm not joking. Seriously man, I think it is that good. Never has a peice of music moved me so much in my 55 years on this planet!!
Man, that tone is so killer! Thank you for sharing it with all of us. Please keep letting your heart pour out of you guitars, you have a special gift Matthew.
I am a 57 model myself , Yeeup August 57 build date . I like the fat tone and ragged playing . POWER SECTION DISTORTION IS THE KEY . Get that power tube burning hot and the rectifier tube straining to keep up and you will understand .
Good grief!!! Wicked tone and completely happening playing. That guitar has a magic sound, even on the cleaner parts, and mates up with that fuzz PERFECTLY!
I finally bought my first Gibson guitar, and it came in the mail today. It's a Gibson SG Special in Ebony with P90s. It has endless sustain and plays like a dream. I am so excited for it.
Bro, waou ! I already said this guitar was awesome, but man, with the fuzz, that was incredible! Keep this Gibson Les Paul forever mate, you’ve got the vibe with it, as if you both were connected. Keep it up 👍🏻🎸

What amuses me is that very few, if any, of the people involved in these 1950s Pauls could have imagined they would end up being played like this.

Sounds incredible brother. I said it before and I’ll say it again, so glad that you decided to keep that Les Paul…
Les Paul Specials in general are really good guitars. Very versatile. Gotta get one with P90's though.
Can't imagine life without it now!👍🏻

Hell yeah, though Oklahoma and England are pretty far
One of the best ideas I come across in a while
Totally what I thought, Chris Buck vibes for sure.

That sounds flat out stunning. Playing was great and absolutely suited the tone. Great work!
