The interviewer obviously didn't understand what Gates meant when he said the graduates were forced to leave the country. She thought that the first thing they would do would be to start a company when they went elsewhere, but that doesn't align with what any of Gates was saying. He was talking all about foreign people entering into highly skilled tech jobs after college and not being able to do so in the US. He was getting started on descring how they would all do exactly that but in another country when the interviewer interrupted and sayed that they were going to be starting companies when they left the country. That's not what Gates was implying at all, but she acted as if she were completing his thought. Doubtless, many of them will start companies, but I'm just talking about what Gates was saying at the moment. This misunderstanding shows ineptitude on the interviewer's part.

Hi@@tenminutetokyo2643 Difference is not that much. Typical software engineer gets around $79,357 per year in India and $103,661 in USA. I am working in industry from 16 years now and I was Solution Architect in my last company (I left for starting my own venture). At my level I will get way more then software engineer.
Not only Microsoft, many Indian start-ups are offering better salaries then biggies like Microsoft and Amazon.
Considering India is way cheaper, now a days it doesn't makes sense to move to other countries just for money. I myself had refused for H1B which my previous country was offering about 2 years back.
Disclaimer is - not everybody gets this kind of salaries in India but average salaries in software industry are significantly more than in 1990's, 2000's. When anybody thinks about India, they need to remember, standards here are changing very-very fast. What seemed to be impossible in 2015 is new normal now a days. Someone can still get cheap programmers, but mostly they will either get inexperienced new folks which will leave them once they will learn enough or they will get dirt as you were looking for dirt.

i think i can tell you what bill is ACTUALLY talking about.... I'm indian... my cousin scored really well in the engineering entrance exam in my country called the IIT-JEE. so he got admission into one of the IITs... after doing his cse (btw my cousin was a really good programmer) he got a job offer from microsoft to work in the USA... and since the job prospects were really good for a b-tech out of college graduate.. he accepted it...
NOW THE PROBLEM is that US govt. has put a limit to how many people can come to their country in such a manner(like my cousin) for work purposes for their own reasons...
but in reality it restricts big-tech companies like microsoft ,facebook, amazon , apple ...to hire ample amounts of "capable" ,skilled people from around the world which they can't do in the usa itself... bill wants to overcome this problem for the good of his company that's all .

    • @mofogie

The US govt actually relaxed H1B visas in 1998. Since then it has become a massive pipeline for indentured servants, with a monopoly from India. A whopping 75% of H1Bs are from India. The next highest is 11% from China, despite them being comparable population size, and also within magnitude comparable engineers produced. The Economic Policy Index found that the majority of H1Bs from India are UNDERPAID BY up to 39%. Microsoft is amongst the worst abusers! Furthermore, most of them occupy entry level jobs, which means that this is worker exploitation, NOT acquiring high skilled immigrants. Even furthermore, it heavily decreases the opportunity for new grads, who aren't even considered in applications because big tech goes straight to the pipeline!
It is estimated now in a BBC study that undergrads wait up to FIVE YEARS after graduating before landing a spot that actually utilizes their skill level. That's how disastrous this has become.

Well, be smarter than the Indians and they will be unemployed in your country, and at some point will return back to India. One more thing, a guy in the comment section asked, "after retiring, why don't they move back to India". Well, here's your answer mister. They bought the place by their own earnings, they deserve to live there. You don't own the copyright of a huge part of the earth called "America". Let us compare India to the US.
      Indians:
      - Raise their kids in social groups, the kids develop personalities.
      - Work together towards a common goal...at the least ones that come to the US do, sharing info, helping each other out.
      - Learn to lie to the point of habit if it gets them ahead
      - If you get an indian boss, they will kick out or push out the non-indians to let them hire more indians
      White people in the US:
      - Raise their kids in a lot of social isolation, everyone lives in different places, doesn't play together, tells them if they go off on their own they'll be kidnapped. Even the government sometimes threatens parents with arrest for letting their kids walk places on their own in public.
      - Kids are raised in a way as to be constantly moved between social groups and it's difficult to have long term friends.
      - The lying thing is debatable. Kids are both taught not to lie, and also to lie, it's a bit complicated.
      - If you get a white boss they are told that firing all the non-whites to bring in white people would be an unacceptable thing to do.
My question is - raising with a social atmoshpere that isn't dominating by "child crime hysteria" seems work for the indians, why can't we do it here in the US?

I read in Wikipedia that 6.6% of USA population has american ancestry. Rest all has mix of people from non-american ancestry. May be this tells us that USA is land of immigrants and everyone together has been making it great from decades. Of course, us (Indians) and Chinese are enormous in population, and not to mention we are extremely adaptive, intelligent, hardworking and ambitious. So we tend to reach every part of the world and grow. There is no point in bringing up racism. That time has gone I believe.

One minute he is complimenting American colleges and the next minute he says that the American Education system isn't producing enough talent. So the foreign born students here on visas are the only ones graduating from these colleges? I can't believe Americans can't see right through this. Bottom line is the graduates here on visas work for a lot less money. Meanwhile the American students continue to attend colleges for these Tech positions believing there is a shortage in the Tech positions while racking up huge amounts of student loan debt and not being able to find employment after graduation. Then people wonder why there is a student loan crisis.

The prerequisite of the H1b visa is that the salary must be above the average level in the database of the Department of Labor. It is a legal requirement made by the U.S. Congress. If it's not met, the visa application will be directly denied by the Department of Homeland Security. There is no "Indian salary" in the U.S. Indian Americans are the race with the highest per capita income among all races in the U.S. Thinking H1b visa holders are more competitive than you because they are paid less is only a losers' fantasy.
The tech giants not only need to pay the same level of salary to H1b workers as to U.S. workers, but also need to pay extra legal costs and go through lengthy immigration processes to hire them. Do you think any company would want to do that if they could find enough domestic tech workers to fill the positions? The fact is simple and straightforward: Americans suck in math and sciences. The U.S. schools cannot produce enough STEM graduates so that tech companies in the US have to rely on foreign STEM students and workers. The tech dominance of the U.S. has been backed up by immigrants since 1920s.

Right, so we have to allow the entire world into our country to work and compete for our jobs but the rest of the world can keep their country for their people.
"Less qualified people should not complain when they got beaten by the competition."
The problem is that MORE qualified people are being replaced by less qualified people because they are cheaper. It's a race to the bottom in wages, pretty soon we'll all be dirt poor. And even if they weren't being replaced by less qualified workers it would still be idiotic. You want a healthy country with a good standard of living then your people need to actually be able to fucking work and make money. You bring in foreigners when there is room for growth in a field, you don't fucking flood it with them and drive all domestic workers out. How does destroying the local economy make for a better world? You talk about thinking globally but say fuck to all the people who can't find jobs because they aren't the best of the best in the entire world. Until all countries have an equal standard of living and freedoms then there will always be more people pouring into some countries than others creating unfair competition to the locals and this kind of bullshit fantasy doesn't work.

Europe didn't invent everything. It likely robbed knowledge gained from other nations as it went conquering the world.

    • @newyorkfan16

@mitch paul Corporation don't want to pay Americans a decent livable wage, so they hire/exploit foreignors who are willing to work for NOTHING. And don't confuse "willing to work for nothing" with the assumption of a great work ethic; these people have the exact same work ethic as Americans, but foreign labor is cheaper, thus making corporations crony capitalists. So who's REALLY racist here, Americans who demand to work for a livable competing wage? Or corporations exploiting foreigners for cheap labor with a veneer of diversity and inclusion for publicity and leftist political sponsorship.

If they need highly skilled tech individuals to fill the openings the American talent pool can't fill, why did they have to lay off their American tech employees? And, if those Americans weren't qualified, why were they hired and why are they training their replacements?
I wonder if they will still be in favor for this program if they had to pay these replacements the same salary requirements if they were Americans? BACK PAY included.

I would like to thank America for making it harder for immigrants to permanently settle here. My family and I came as immigrants and waited over 15 years for a green card. Foreigners coming each year by the 10s of thousands (mostly to a handful of US regions) is only going make it overwhelming for those who are permanently settled here and flood the market with excess labor which will put everyone at a disadvantage since you either are left with a crappy job, a low paying job, or no job.

Not really. They're bound by law to offer the same pay. They can't pay less. I can't believe this myth is still going on.
Indians seem to get less because of the VISA "freeze" that is during visa process like getting a green card, foreign professionals cannot have a change in their contract/salary otherwise the process will reset. So these people are stuck at the old salary till the process is done which usually takes around 5-10 years or so. This is the root of this myth.
Also, you can't get many jobs or promotions beyond a certain point unless you have a Green Card leading to another problem which propagates this myth.

A real case when a secretive coworkers create problems for their loyal and hardworking colleagues for being different, in culture and background, and start looking at them as threat, for their jobs, instead of looking at them as the builders of the USA. It is really an attitude thing... The system then responds to these secretive coworkers in negative way against the highly qualified.

Mr. Gates deserves my respect for his success in business, but when he says the United States should allow those whom he calls "capable people" to remain in this country, I disagree in totality. There is something that we should embark upon. It is the emigration of skilled, or talented people out of the US. It is nearly impossible for an engineering graduate who was born in this country to obtain a job here. We need support for U.S. citizens who are attempting to emigrate to countries where they can start a career in engineering. Never again will I back down from confronting someone who claims that the United States has a shortage of engineers.
If a U.S. citizen earns an advanced degree, we must staple to his diploma a Russian work visa. Or a French, or Swiss, or German visa.

American workers benefit from immigrants because it builds a greater market for american goods. And it helps build and expand the american power worldwide. We could put our heads in the sand and go through with isolationist policies. Or we could actually focus on economic growth and expanding opportunity for the united states.
