I know this is 3 years late and probably someone already mentioned it, but I just started rewatching this show through your reactions and I wanted to add that I honestly think Askeladd kind of planned all of this out in his head. Not everything, but he had them destroy the bridge to waste their time and make Thorkell catch up so he could maybe interrupt the Rebels from killing Askeladd and to make Thorfinn and Bjorn go with Canute to protect him. I think he didn't actually think Thorfinn would really come back to "rescue" him, because he wants to kill him himself, but he knew it was a possibility. His original plan was just to rescue Canute and then whatever happens to himself happens probably but then this outcome happend which is really the best of all and proved that Askeladd's luck wasn't really gone, it just changed which way to go since the objective regarding the prince changed as well.
Dunno why nobody ever told Thorkell how Floki and Askeladd are responsible for Thors death, Thorfinn knows about it, so why not tell Thorkell? Guess it's for the plot, otherwise Thorkell would kill both of them himself
