I think its important to consider the context, this movie was during the height of the Cold War. US vs USSR was a common thread penetrating almost all aspects of our societies. Sports, politics, science, engineering, etc. Rocky IV was Sly's attempt to make a statement that we can change and learn to accept each other rather than be enemies.

Either way, If this had been real life Drago and those national leaders would likely have been found dead mysteriously not long after he lost that fight. They cannot lose face especially to the U.S. And him doping or steroiding or whatever was him guaranteeing a win. At whatever cost. Even now, remember the last summer Olympics when Russia’s teams got disqualified because too many athletes tested positive for things they shouldn’t have? I can’t even get too mad at the athletes because I can’t even imagine the literal national pressure they’re under to win and represent.

There's a lot of people in professional sports and in the military that whether they realize it or not, are constantly looking for that next "battle", that next "enemy", that next obstacle. It's part of what makes us good at what we do. It gives us purpose. It serves something bigger than ourselves. When the battle is over, your purpose is over and there's nothing left to live for.

Interesting fact: Dolph Lundgren is not only an actual genius in real life, and ranked as one of the smartest people in the world, he is truly monstrously strong. During the filming, he hit Stallone in the chest and he was hospitalized and has had long term, permanent damage to his heart.

Fun fact: Carl Weathers aka Apollo was a pro football player and Dolph Lundgren was a professional Kickboxer. So both were actual athletes before making these films. Also Dolph accidentally hospitalized Sylvester Stallone during a sparring session when he punch him in the chest. The punch was said by the doctors to have the same damage as a car wreck. So he (Dolph) really was that dude.

Duke: Pretty tough weather we’re having?
    Rocky: Yeah…
Duke: But it’s good. Toughen you up.
    Rocky: Yeah I guess so.
Duke: You know…when Apollo died… a part of me died. Apollo was like a son to me. I raised him. But You’re the one who’s gonna keep his spirit alive. You’re the one, that’s gonna make sure that he didn’t die for nothing. Now you’re gonna have to go through Hell… Worse than any nightmare you could ever dream. But in the end… I know you’ll be the one standing. You know what you have to do. Do it… Do it.
    Rocky: Thanks Duke

I saw Rocky IV at the cinema in 1985 when I was 13. The Dolph Lundgren/Ivan Drago line "io ti spiezzo in due" (literally "I will split you in two" which is the Italian version of the line he says before meeting Rocky) is still Iconic. Any person my age could say it, and another person my age would immediately understand the reference.

When I was just a pup my pappy threw me out of a moving Dodge van and I was forced to live with the Lobos and coyotes in Texas many years back . I was only 6 but I survived on armadillo meat and actually ate cigarette butts . Years later docs told me I was so used to eating cigarette butts that I would pass away if I stopped , so I still do. I walked from California to Washington DC and met many people along the way . A truck driver named Poon Scooter showed me this VHS Rocky 4 while we drove to DC. This film changed my life . I realized what it was to be Living in America . The song by James brown changed the way I felt about the world, about people . Now I’m working on capital hill, all because of this film. Great episode !!

Hey Asia and BJ, nice reaction. This is my favorite of the original Rocky films. Dolph Lundgren fighting Sylvester Stallone was epic. RIP Apollo aka Carl Weathers, thanks for playing an iconic nemesis/friend to Rocky and being an overall genuine person. I highly suggest Masters Of The Universe (1987) with Dolph Lundgren playing He-Man, a favorite cartoon from my childhood. The next Stallone movie should be Over The Top (1987) about arm wrestling. Robert Tepper did the song "No Easy Way Out" and Survivor did "Burning Heart" great songs for the soundtrack.
