Found my 597 at a pawn shop for 120$ talked him down to 100$ walked out the door with it and 50 rounds for 110$ roughly. I have NEVER had a single problem out of it. It’s honestly just a well made 22. I’m a huge ruger fan but Remington has really impressed me with this one.

great review! I bought the Remington here in Canada and the price difference was crazy $250 for the remington $370 for the ruger both iron sight versions so for 120 cheaper I got a scope and a bunch of ammo and still ended up cheaper than the ruger. thanks for the video!

@@abcdaw22 I'm not sure what your opinion is based on? I own four Ruger 10/22's and one Remington 597. I like them all and they all work flawlessly. Ruger's success is hard to call "Junk". They have been selling the 10/22 for over 50 years and have sold more than 5 Million of these rifles. That is over 100,000 of this model every year for over 50 years. That makes this one of the most popular, if not THE most popular firearm ever sold by a single manufacturer, and it is still going strong. And as far as comparing value; Turners, a local sporting goods store chain in California had a special last Christmas for a 10/22 with a synthetic stock, a Weaver 3x9 power scope and a Ruger hard case for $199 and they sold over 2,000 of them in one day. "Junk", I don't think so.

Great comparison video. From my experience, both are equally reliable and equally accurate. I find the 597 has more of a full size rifle feel. Also, the 597 is available with iron sites. Mine came with iron sites and they are a very good site at that. However, as I have fiberoptic sites on my 10/22, I opted to put a 3-9X40 scope on the 597. I typically shoot at 50 and 100 Yds. Thanks again for the great video!

I bought my 597 probably 8 years ago from Outdoor world and it had iron sights on it. The same iron sights like the Remington 522. I didnt know it came without iron sights and came with a scope. I gave my 522 away when I bought the 597 but the 522 was only 4.5 pounds with pretty much the same accuracy. I have never had a problem out of the 597. definitely a fun rifle to shoot and its what I use to teach people how to shoot rifles with.

After shooting my brothers 10/22 with the butler creek 25 round mags for a few years and loving it. I bought a model 597 with a scope back in april and its performed flawlessly even with remington 30 round mags. We have found the model 597 to be just a little more accurate than the 10/22.just my opinion theyre both great rifles but id get a model 597 because you can get one with a scope, 30 round mag and 525 cartridges for the price of a 10/22 with just a scope.

I bought a 10/22 5 years ago and right out of the box I had to replace the trigger assembly (no charge or shipping). Since then I have had no problems. I got a Marlin model 60 in 1974. After 40 years it decided it would only cycle CCI Mini mag ammo. I like CCI so no problem. I cannot tell a real difference in the performance or accuracy of either gun. I love them both. I don't think you can go wrong with either of these guns, and they are the best way to introduce a young person to firearms (single shot for 10 yrs. or younger for safety).

Both are very reliable out of the box for the first 1500-2500 rounds. After that the soft metal the extractor and firing pin are made from starts to wear and you get light strikes and stovepipes. Thankfully there is replacement parts from the big V that are made from hardened steel. If you plan to shoot it a lot add in another $50 for the V's bolt tune up.

Ok I am a 72 year old. A former high volume Gun Shop owner.
Now in my years of business from 1977 to 1999 I sold more Ruger 10/22s than any other 22 I sold. Total sales of 10/22 for those years 2500. And no one returned any for defective. Now over the years two things of major importance happened at Ruger Arms.#1. The magazine release was made longer for hunters who wear gloves. #2 William "Bill" Ruger passed away leaving the business to his son. After that the son has more or less left the business alone with some small changes.
Now Ruger started the poor mans rifle aka 597 and has changed mostly nothing. What you see is what you get with the 597.
Quality is less than Ruger by far. Adaptability is way less than Ruger 10/22 look at all that can and has been done by people with the 10/22 amazing.
    Now would I chose a 597 Remington over a Ruger 10/22 LOL I said I am 72 and I am not stupid.
Before you buy either look back at Ruger Arms History it is mind boggling as to what Ruger from day one to today has accomplished.

  • @Ottienger

The 597 in the video is a heavy barrel. If you get the regular barrel then it has the front and back iron sights. There is a mod for the 10/22 to have bolt hold open but dont think there any magazine that will do it without the mod. I had a 10/22 and sold it for a 597. I love the thing and just a fan of a lot of remington products.

I've heard a lot of crap about the 597 since release, picked mine up in 2018 and haven't found a bad thing to say yet.
Fired 1000's upon 1000's of rounds and it's only been cleaned once and still shoots straight no misfires or anything. I got the plastic mags and they work perfectly fine. As for the ammo, i haven't found an issue with any ammo, even the cheap Remington stuff where the projectile pulls off with little effort.
With the factory crap scope i can do 1" groups at 100 yards.
    HOWEVER
The 10/22 is better because of the part availability.

Good practical video. Ruger has a good name brand so does Remington. Ruger's often cost more than they are worth in comparison with other manufacturers, but their products are pretty reliable. The Ruger 10-22 style rifle was actually made by AMT for a while in a rife called a 10-25 I had one in stainless. It was actually made better than the Ruger. The Ruger will always have more resale, but it should it cost more. There are more aftermarket parts as well in triggers, stocks and barrels. You want to trick one out and money isn't a factor the Ruger is the way to go. If money is the root of the purchase the Remington wins hands down. You can get some very nice stocks for either at Boyd's.

The reason the 597 doesn’t have iron sights is because it has the scope. My 597 I bought back in 2006 has iron sights with the screws for a scope.

Every gun manufacturer recommends a certain ammo be shot through the gun. The rifles in the barrel are engineered to spin the bullet at a certain speed. Shooting a higher power round through the barrel, and the front of the bullet overrides the rifles. This will wear a grove in the rifles and ruin a new rifle quickly. This is why you get spiritic groups on a target, and never get a tight grouping. The manufacturer knows shooting the recommended rounds will make the rifles in the barrel last longer and be more precise. Higher power rounds can damage the barrel in 500 rounds run through it.

If you watch the website for them, you can get the Ruger brand BX-25 magazines (25 rounds) on Gunmagwarehouse.com for $12, on sale.

The Ruger isn't designed to stay open after the last shot. The 597 is.

That is true. You can take it to a gunsmith, and have that fixed. Its just a plate.

I got a fucken lemon 10 22. I know it's not the ammo, used 4 different mags and it still jams. gonna just send it back.

Were you shooting stingers? They do ask that you dont shoot stingers. They will fire, but the case may swell, and jam.

I disagree a bit with your assessment of the magazine releases. Yes the 597 release is different from the 10-22. It only takes one finger movement and the magazine drops out of the receiver on its own. The 10/22 takes two hands.

I think the Ruger's bolt wont stay open to keep it from being used in shootings honestly. You can get 15 round and 25 round mags for it and I've heard of 50 round drums even.

the Remingon 597 feels really cheap and poorly made... BUT, it is light, cheap ($250 at gander), reliable, accurate, and looks cool!
