Thought it was also relevant to mention that Canada has recently ordered 12 new warships, consisting of primarily icebreakers for the arctic, drastically expanding their maritime fleet. Military exercises have also been run, and their Arctic military base, CFS Alert, has seen increased activity.
Yes! While I totally understand that Russia is showing a more aggressive look (because that's basically their trademark), I thought this went very easy on Canada which would benefit from this ocean at least as much as Russia. I'm a geologist living in Canada, and there's a lot of resources located in the arctic, ranging from gold, to diamond and oil. The cost of transportation from the arctic is very high, so only a few select deposit are actually economically viable. Having an access to the arctic ocean would be a game changer for the regions of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. And don't go thinking that Canada is going to play nice and not get those resources even if they harm the environment, because they're currently extracting oil sands in Alberta ( Oil / Tar sands release a lot more CO2 into the atmosphere than traditional oil because they need much more energy to be processed).

I would have liked to see what the more NATO-aligned countries are doing in the artic. I am not defending Russia, but I feel like the video was overly focused on them.
Well I also wanted to know the stakes of all Arctic countries and also how US is not involved. I mean they didn't leave any side in Asia such as American Samoa which is not even close to mainland so how come they're letting of something which is their Mainland region
Teacher - "So what's your take on the themes explored between Lennie and George's relationship in Of Mice And Men?" You - "Climate change is building a strategic superpower in the arctic that Russia is laying claim to and we're doing nothing about it"
She's lowkey pretty stupid imo - but I'd have to hear more from her. Her statements about Russia's policy of state capitalism being incompatible is. . . well maybe she needs glasses. I might recommend her my optometrist.
I'd go with you being skeptical. Not everything revolves around politics. It's the same as asking the people who went as west as they possibly could in the Gold Rush era if they considered that the US's political ambitions had motivated them. They'd just tell you that they had money on their mind. You should approach topics as being critical rather than skeptical. I know, tiny semantic difference - but it's pretty important - since being critical puts more emphasis in the complexity of truth.
Holy sh.... I'm russian, living in Russia, we do care mostly about our on lives, than about crooked goverment we live with. Cos it's like a canser, we simply can't control it, for many reasons. I didn't see any fear in this people, they simply didn't care much.
Because global warming will probably not stop anytime soon, and thus this new area will become more valuable as the area around the equator will become uninhabitable. Pretty much thus securing their position as a future power and ensuring the survival of their people. Which is if you think about it the whole concern around global warming. Global warming will not end life on earth, but it might end the human race. Trust me, life will adapt and overcome, we just won't.
Because you are stupid, and governments are not. They can do nothing about melting ice. Global warming is not caused by humans. Global coolings and warmings have always been part of the earth's history.
because government is still there to run when there's no more ice. yes, the effect of climate change is bad, but seeing how people defying nature (coastal embankment, storm water management, sea water desalination plant, gmo foods), it's safe to say that the government and people is still going to exist.
i would argue the opposite. I would argue that a more effective way to prevent problems in the arctic and to help deal with climate change in the arctic would be to prevent nations from claiming land at all and to treat the arctic more similarly to antarctica. The borders series has proven how dangerous and harmful broders can potentially be if not managed properly. Love the show tho
Unfortunately for us, countries and companies have incentive to be opportunistic about the arctics melting ice caps. I sure hope we still have an arctic in twenty or thirty years from now. :(
Guys, this video is about the borders on the artartic Ocean and Russia is the biggest player there with the most military activity. It is natural to talk about them allot.
I agree, but here this episode feeled like propaganda document while not even mentoning us military activity in greenland and other arctic areas. If he would made this episode about arctic borders it would be much interesting and then bringing these strategic places with other military activities in whole ice sea area. But now its just scaring ppl who arent so interested in these stuff. I really like this serie, but this episode was simply bad propaganda video. Like Im interested in this kind places, but as i see this island is economically strategic place and there is no military activities. Also according this doc they got agreement with 45 countries. So does these 44 countries other countries have any activities on the island? What was point bringing that blonde with cold war propaganda and bringing obviously Russians military navy activities (tranings) in this episode while this navy don't have anything to do with this island. And if it would if would be huge conflict in area which would be in everyone's knowledge. And for balance making viewers believes that US dont have any military activities in whole arctic area? Anyway interesting place and would like in future that serie would bring in episodes both side o view in these conflict areas and try to be neutral in political questions. Like you can see what one point view causes in this comment section.. if this episode would be balanced i bet ppl wouldnt be arguing with their believes… Anyway have a nice day you all. Peace and love ,)
"We can only hope that Russia will continue to keep playing by the rules" I'll be the first to say Fat Chance, soy boy. Currently Russia owns the Artic.
They're doing it legitimately so far. They're taking the biggest initiative in the race for the north, and if they resort to aggresive action and policy in the end, the other nations can only blame themselves for not being prepared when it's been very clear (for decades now actually) that Russia has been building up their northern infrastrucures.
Haha, I'm half Chinese and I hate that line, and you don't see them going after former territories in Mongolia, Outer Manchuria which is now part of Russia or Vietnam! Now that China is rich and powerful, they are now bullying their neighbors like Russia or the US did.

Why can't we just leave this region alone instead of constructing oil wells? The ice is melting and that's not an opportunity. It's a warning sign and we need to prevent it. so we are trying to stop global warming and ice melting meanwhile northern countries are planning to extract another oil when the ice finally melts?...
Yes
Yes, get it before it froze again.
Who are "WE"?
@@maazkalim Based scientific studies and historical records, every hundreds of years the climate changes dramatically from warmest to coldest and vice versa.
Polar bears are doomed.
Michael Herman Polar bears are incredibly resilient to changing climates. Scientists believe the polar bear population is nearly three times larger than it was in 1970.
No, they need freedom.
Recent is probably the key word. Good chance this video was recorded almost a year ago.
hedgehog3180 all the abroad footage is from the last 6 months, but the voice overs are from the last month or so. Doubt its changed, they simply decided to focus on Russia I guess.

I love the Borders series and your journalistic filming approach is amazing man. I know this one is old but I haven't seen it. I usually keep my notifications up to date and patiently wait for every new episode!

Call me skeptical, but it doesn’t surprise me that the Russians living there were perhaps reluctant to talk politics to an American interviewer
Not if they didn't want their words twisted out of shape, that is.
I agree, they dont want trouble.
I have encountered several russians that share this attitude when inquired about politics, and I am not north american
Beautiful scenes. Great to get to see all this while it lasts.
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Title of the video should’ve been “Russia in the Arctic.” I kinda wanted to hear about the other Arctic countries as well :/
Yeah because the US is an innocent naive child that hasn't done anything at all with its tens of aircraft carriers all over the world.
US aircraft carriers are democratic. They bring peace and love.
yep they sure do
why are governments more worried about their influence than the melting ice
Yeah, the answer is cash. A country like Russia does not care about the environment, because they make too much money on oil and natural gas.
$$$$
We should be focusing on the melting not how to make money of it
Unfortunately for us, countries and companies have incentive to be opportunistic about the arctics melting ice caps. I sure hope we still have an arctic in twenty or thirty years from now. :(

Arctic ocean so beautiful

@@jeromefitzroy - It's the 21st Century. Countries don't annex territory anymore (except for Russia with Crimea). China wasn't very powerful a few decades ago, but it bullied and took over the even weaker Tibet.

Why can't we just leave this region alone instead of constructing oil wells? The ice is melting and that's not an opportunity. It's a warning sign and we need to prevent it. The UN shouldn't approve the claims of these countries as it creates perverse incentives. No one should ideally own in this region in my opinion
