    In this video, I'll try to help answer the question: Do you (really) need an analog synth? To answer that, I'll show my DIY MIDI controller Minimoog "clone" workflow. I'll show you how I prepare my Ableton Live set in a way that I always have my instruments and mapping ready to go, just like I had a true analog setup.
    Nowadays plugins can sound amazing, and building a MIDI controller can be super cheap. So, do you REALLY need an analog synth?

    Gustavo boa noite. Sou o Ulisses.
    Sua capacidade me emociona.
    Grande abraço.

    Personally.... i do enjoy using physical instruments SOOOO much more than virtual instruments. Because i simply need the physical contact with an instrument to really interact and have fun with it. I am not really a musician so my approach is a little different than a classically trained actual musician who just needs keys connected to something. For many years i used virtual instruments simply because i had no money for actual Synthesizers or MIDI controllers. In fact i never really felt MIDI controllers appealing at all because they just feel faceless and random. Virtual instruments were a way to actually do something and i put together a nice little virtual studio that i still use every now and then. HOWEVER..... actually playing with virtual instruments that you cannot touch... really isn't fun. As soon as new analog synths became a lot more affordable, when Behringer for example started their clone series, a dream came true to actually own an actual analog Synth where it would not cost you an arm and a leg. So to me there is no way back anymore. Virtual Synthesizers depend too much on computers and compatible Operating systems. So older VST instruments will at some point become not supported anymore, when my actual hardware standalone synth won't mind and would still let me play and record, just by turning it on. Not even the nicest MIDI controller can get over the fact that Software really comes with too many caveats.

      Totally agree. Unfotunately, even the Behringers are way too expensive in most places outside Europe and US, so buying one might not be an option, however a MIDI controller + plugins can be closest and cheapest option!

    Perhaps your next project might be to add an LED to you controller and send messages from Live using Max telling it what the faders have been assigned to, just like it is done on the Push2.

      I'm not sure I understand. How can I know which pot is assingned to what only with LEDs?

    Dude, have you thought adding a raspberry pi to that Minimoog so it works as a standalone Synth? its sort of a project i have on the back of my head. i actually came across this channel while doing some quick research on making custom midi devices.

    Funny I used VST for a couple of decades because of, well honestly, poverty, and now have a Grandmother and some Behringer’s and going back to VST is pretty eye opening. Too many little things that start to add up that you end up missing. At one point I tried to do the loop back overdrive trick on VST and it just fluttered like a fart 😂 like wtf is this, how did I even think that was normal in any way before? FM, mixer drive, OSC detune, harmonics, headroom, ENV character… FILTER, is all quite flat and small.
    I will say the official Minimoog app on iOS is pretty decent but as Trent Reznor said it sounds like “this big” compared to the real thing. I have little good to say about Arturia, Diva and the others I’ve used. I think a Behringer is like $250 and that can’t be much more than these VSTs. Just get one and see what the differences are for oneself.

    Plugins are plugins, synths are synths. Making synths is fun, but I have no idea how to make plugins, or music.

    • @NerdMusician
      @NerdMusician  Год назад +7

      Ufortunately, most of people of the world doesn't live in the US or Europe, so even the "cheap" synths get really expesive around here! Imagine, we prob make around 5-10x less money and pay 5-10x more for the products. So, complicated... But, I admit I do want a Behringer clone. :p

    Do you need analog? In 2023, I would say no. CPU power is so good it can emulate all the old quirkiness. But in the 80's or 90's, you absolutely did. Even in the 2010's I would say the technology wasn't quite there yet. But now? We can emulate to the circuit level in real time, no problem.

    • @NerdMusician
      @NerdMusician  Год назад

      Yeah, I totally agree. Just hear the Diva plugin, the emulation is truly great,

    • @anthonybrett
      @anthonybrett Год назад +1

      Exactly. Blindfolded, everyone would guess between high quality plugins and analog. I use both and I love both, (horses for courses) but to suggest that todays plugins don't sound analog is just delusional.

      You guys are either thinking wishfully or have never tried an analog synth, or are deaf. You can be happy with your VST but thinking it’s even close is… interesting.
