- Playdough Surgery 🔪🧠🍒 - Brain Aneurysm Clipping
.
A berry (saccular) aneurysm is a round outpouching of a blood vessel resembling a berry on a narrow stem. These are most commonly found in the circle of Willis - the system of interconnecting arteries found on the undersurface of the brain.
.
A majority of unruptured cerebral aneurysms are asymptomatic and found incidentally, but subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the space between the brain and surrounding membrane) due to aneurysm rupture is a catastrophic event with a high mortality rate and chance of permanent disability. Subarachnoid hemorrhage is often described as the “worst headache of my life” - those who survive rupture have a high chance of rebleeding.
.
Amazingly, neurosurgeons perform meticulous microsurgical dissection to reach symptomatic aneurysms, free them the feeding vessels, and to place clip(s) on the aneurysm neck to stop blood flow to them. Alternatively, endovascular coiling can be performed to form a clot in the sac to prevent future rupture.
