It is worth mentioning that the history on this knife (like many) is heavily impacted by rumours and claims, many of which can turn out to be incorrect as more knowledge is discovered. The story of Lord Wharncliffe having 'invented' the Ettrick is based on many of these claims. While there is likely truth in this story, it may not be the whole truth. I feel the need to state this, as I want to provide the facts as best I can. So as I learn more about this knife, (and many other knives) I will try to offer the latest and most accurate information I have. But in the meantime, always remember to take history with a grain of salt, as many things change the more we learn. Cheers!
Thanks for showing us these,, you've convinced me to search one out,, but at first glance, they seem much more expensive than what you paid, (Heinnie haynes are out of stock of all the versions),, Great video, thanks.. John
@@TheKnifeRaven yep, I've seen they're out of stock of all the versions, but I've clicked on the "let me know" button, for when they get some in,, yes, they seem cheaper than elsewhere,, 👍👍. Cheers,, John..
As you know, I’m a huge fan of A Wright and Son. I’ve tried very hard to help them, even buying several of their knives to send to other reviewers who might be interested. To be clear, I’ve never taken anything free from them or any other small businesses. I aim to support them where I think they deserve it, not to exploit them! Have you tried Michael May or Steven Crocker? I know you’ve had some Taylor’s. There’s also the Ibberson knives (Wostenholm/Rodgers), but I’m less of a fan of them.
Hi Eric, I have 1 Michael May knife, no Steven, no Ashley Customs. I've got a couple J. Rodgers, but my favourite Sheffield knives are from Wright. The only "free" knives I got from A. Wright were replacements. As a couple of their knives broke on me. But I continue to support them due to their improving quality standards. The knives broke around a year ago, but I've noticed great improvements ever since. As you may know, this is my second channel. And the majority of my Sheffield knives are on @TheStreamingEnderman
I have the aw ettrick in oak, will never be my favourite pattern but its an interesting addition to the collection. I have just received a warncliffe/tackler Barlow AW with the fattest stag covers I have ever seen! According to Jane from the FSS it is a one off! Very very pleased with it 🙂🦌
I'm wondering if the change of stamp on the blade is in response to reviewers such as Slick and yourself who have complained about not being able to read the full wording? I have to agree about the quality improvement. It is definitely noticeable. My most recent Lambsfoots have both been decently sharp with uniform grinding and the Ironwood I received is probably the best made AW I own. It also happens to be the most expensive but price and quality don't always go hand in hand but on this one they do. The only slight negative for me is that it came with a Made in Sheffield stamp. What a shame, my best AW and it hasn't got their name on it! As for them not being too well known, I wonder if a huge increase in popularity might lead to a decrease in quality if they were inundated with orders? They might struggle to expand the firm whilst still maintaining the newly found quality control. Just a thought.👍
I'm disappointed when I order an AW and it comes with just the made in Sheffield tang stamp, they need to realise that us collectors like the makers name on our knives!
@@ianrankin1293 True, imagine ordering a Ferrari and having it delivered and when you go outside to look at it, there on the bonnet instead of the prancing horse it simply says Made in Italy. AW need to stop using the Made in Sheffield stamps. It diminishes their brand.
Really?! Interesting, mine are always stiff, (of course) but I've *never* had an Ettrick nail-breaker. (10. Perhaps you've got an anomaly? Or are used to knives with much lighter pulls? Either way, I'm very sorry to hear that. I've been trying to sway A. Wright into making their springs less tight, as they've been breaking on me a lot, lately. Cheers, anyways!

Excellent video. I got my first A Wright recently and I am very impressed
Very glad to hear! Which model did you select?
Well said .

Heinnie Haynes is worth checking constantly, because when they get a batch, they sell them *cheap.*
Most often, they retail for about 30 GBP.
Cheers!

Great video! Very cool knife!
Thanks! I just want more people to experience this knife.
I have 4 ettricks myself, 3 are arthur wright and sons, and one is my grail; cherry wood from Michael May. Love that knife! Love your passion!
I wanted a May Ettrick in Mahogany! Sadly, Michael didn't respond to finish the payment!

@@ianrankin1293 My Ebony Lambsfoot came with that stamp. I liked the knife so much that I don't actually care about the stamp!
Recently purchased an Ettrick and after 2 weeks I have no thumb nails. 😢 so so tight.
