  • Rosa experienced a left medullary/brainstem stroke. Strokes in the brainstem can affect a person’s ability to swallow,
their coordination for mobility tasks and their ability to balance.
Physical therapy for brainstem strokes focuses on balance re-education, including improving trunk control, single leg stance activities, and dynamic walking activities
to improve a patient’s overall balance in order to foster their recovery and return to independence.

Good ideas, but where's the gait belt?!!!!!!!

I'm sure there are cases where a gait belt can be warranted but in my professional opinion, it was unnecessary in this situation. In my experience here, I don’t often use gait belts because instead I am guarding and facilitating the patient to perform the treatment in the most optimal way. I feel like we can be safe but also facilitate improved motor control by using my hands.

      @@HelenHayesHospital Nonsense

@@HelenHayesHospital You probably say this because the required use of a gait belt with patients is not part of the hospital protocol, unless you simply ignore safety protocol; using a gait belt does not hinder your ability as a therapist to provide manual cueing to facilitate sensorimotor function, if you properly place the gait belt, not to get in the way of what you need to do. By the way, I do see that you're gestational, and I don't know if that had anything to do with what I'm about to say, but I feel like you should have been the one providing manual facilitation to the patient during the ball kicking exercise. The Aide is just keep the patient from falling, but literally not doing anything to guide that lady's body with promoting more natural movements or postural control, not that I'd expect such a thing, since an aide is not a skilled therapist. The lady is leaning against the aide as the aide pushes back. It is true that having an aide assisting makes things safer as far as the preventing the pt from completely falling, but IF needed during loss of balance, a gait belt helps you or your aide not to be tugging on the patient's clothing. Just as important, it is how you choose to use your aide; and I'd certainly not recommend using an aide to replace your skills with the patient. Nice intervention activities, otherwise.
