When I was 14 years old, I was watching Forrest Gump one day. There's a scene where Jenny is about to jump off the balcony, and the song "Freebird" is playing. That moment got me started on guitar. After a while, I got into the typical metal bands from the 80s,90s and early 2000s. Then my father showed me the SRV performance at Austin City Limits from 1989. I was like "Holy Sh%T".....
🙌 i feel down picking Master of Puppets is like one of the pillars/big first achievements , such an endurance run . the speed at which they played it back in the 80s is scary stuff
Hats off to anyone who can play Master of Puppets start to finish without ending up with carpal tunnel, thats a beast of a song to pull off in its entirety
First song I learned on Guitar was Brain Stew- Green Day. Then it went to Wish you were here- Pink Floyd. I have been working on One and For whom the bell tolls for about 2 weeks. This video is awesome!!
@@JamieSlays 7 riffs that utilize 7 different guitar techniques lets say sweep picking as envy, wrath could be like trem picking or chugs so on and so forth idk could be cool once you figured it out
Only recently I noticed that I can't really play Master of Puppets at full speed, yet. Only a couple times I could, but never again. Reaching the end of the descending riff feels exhaustive. I always thought the second riff was the hardest, and may be ir played in strict downstrokes (which I'm not trying to do now), but man, this is harder than I thought, and, I've been playing for years already.
Enter Sandman - my brother's best friend taught me how to play power chords when I was like 13. That was one of those watershed moments with my guitar playing. Learning how to play power chords when you're an absolute beginner unlocks pretty much ALL of your favourite songs!
Great list! Even though it was mostly solos that made me want to play guitar/bass, some riffs that definitely inspired me personally were Before I forget by slipknot and Blind by KoRn (That and Metallica, duh)
For me the start was Hell‘s Bells by AC/DC and the insane energy of Angus Young live on stage in general. After that Motörhead, Metallica & Iron Maiden followed quickly. Then Pantera, Amon Amarth and Slipknot…
That was fantastic Jamie but can u give us a guitar lesson of the song are u dead yet by children of bodom I know how to Olay it but is tricky and I missing some part
I have Revstar Standard with humbuckers and Yamaha THR30II amp. And i am complete beginner. What pedals do i need to achieve sound similar to what is in your video? Here i mean relatively inexpensive pedals....thanks
@@JamieSlays papa roach and static x for sure surprised me. Slipknot Sic dosent get enough credit it sounds easy, looking at the tab it looks easy. That outro riff absolutely wears my picking hand out
When I learned how to program beats, learning to play guitar was a means to include melody really. Just plain one-finger droptune riffs. My style is super basic and fairly slow paced, so when I actually want to figure out a riff I have a very hard time doing that because I never learned the regular basics everyone has figured out 🫠
The “let freedom ring with the shotgun blast” breakdown in Davidian changed my life!
Omg yes

Yehhhhh! I could play it two years into my guitar playing and I love it so much
I've seen videos of Metallica playing it live decades ago and they played it even faster than on the album.
I used to see people doing it alternate picking and I learned it down picking only because I was bad at alternate picking lol
Now it's a flex :D
GREAT video! LOVE the throwbacks! Phenomenal info & motivation 🖤✨
Great list!!! And demonstration!
Thank you!!

2:46 i 100% agree, i use these all the time as they are very essential for down picking (especially for minutes on minutes)
Love your videos Jamie and to hear you say metal!!
Some nice surprises in there and lots of nostalgia and trips down memory lane

Walk by Pantera, having Locking Tuners are a Must if you want to play it the same way as DmD.

Yayyyyy good starting off points
Sg + P90 + Booster + Laney + thin strings + C# baritone tuning = Metal 🎉🧟♂️
Walk was the first song I learned. No regerts!
hey Jamie! what do you recommend to play at home and some gigs? I never got that 6505 parkway drive tone with the free plugins or my valeton multiefx
Iron man on a 7 string in B standard is literally the sound of a neutron star.
Awesome video!
That was fantastic Jamie but can u give us a guitar lesson of the song are u dead yet by children of bodom

I can try!
Mine is definitely
MASTER, MASTER!!!

One of the first metal riffs i learned was Master of Puppets. I think it should be the first riff any future metal player should learn.

Lessons for ea song??
Heyy

Papa Roach riff doesn't half sound like Genghis Khan by Iron Maiden
Haven’t watched it yet but let me guess Metallica master of puppets and Pantera Walk
They’re definitely in there haha but some of the others may shock you!

I've been playing for about 7-8 months and I can play all of Master of Puppets except for the solos and I'm currently learning James' solo right now
