I never saw the advantage of the round grip at the top of the handle until I found that it allows me to push with my stomach. When winching with two hands I actually prefer without the grip. It was on a Class40 racing monohull which required more force than usual. On my day-to-day boat, the round bit is actually cumbersome as it causes the handle to touch the stanchions at every turn. So beware of the space between your winches and the stanchions.
