    Reported in on Dec 7, 1971. Company #434. My buddy Jay and I on the buddy system. Being both from Wisconsin we were used to the cold. Poor kids from down south were freezing. We laughed our way through bootcamp except for the extended three week long service week mess cooking. Engineman Chief Cushing was our company commander, a really good guy. We ended up making Color Company. Upon graduation I went on to aviation, Jay to sub service. We both got out as E-5 Electronic Technicians and to this day are still close friends.

      I'm from Wisconsin too. My company (445) graduated in November of '72. It's tough getting old!

    Cool stuff. I was there and graduated the first week of December '72. Company 479, we were the Color Company. Our company commander was an E-5 named Kellar. I vividly remember that chow hall and barracks where we spent the first couple of days and of course the tunnel. I got a chuckle when I saw the guys ironing clothes with plastic soap containers. Thanks for posting.

    1:12 no matter how much things have changed, (during the 2000's, most of all), everyone recognizes the tunnel. ⚓

    Got there end of March 1972, Company 106. Think the company commander's name was Gunners Mate 1st class RAY( was his last name). I don't know why but he selected me to be the company "honorman". I was the 2nd Platoon leader. Still remember had to shout out "2nd platoon prepare to march" and "2nd platoon halt". I was really homesick and thought I had made a big mistake but now realize it may have been the smartest thing I ever did.
    I paid for the company book which was $7 dollars and guess what, the dude that collected the money kept it all and I never got the book. Have no idea if anyone else got theirs. I'm almost 70 years old now and I can still remember being there like it was yesterday.

    I was in bootcamp Oct of '77. Even these guys 5 years before me "looked" the same as my boots. Kinda funny.

    I reported on Oct.-Dec. 1971 Company 357, 1st class Boatsman Mate Sponic. It's odd that the photo of the guys in Company 445 looks very much like mine.

    Great video bringing back some vivid memories. Obviously there were some "stock" photos inserted here, some of the same photos from my issue of the "Keel" from 1971 Company 375. My Company Commander was EM1 Charlie Baugh. At approximately 3:09 in the vid, the man in khakis looks like BMC Ray H. Fisher, who I knew there.

    I wasn't in the Navy but I worked for the local cable TV provider in the late 90s and got a firsthand experience of how the big shots lived. We did outlet installations for the officer's club down by the lake. I preferred to work out away from Main side. I enjoyed installing out in places like the Forestal village. Admiral Polatty was in charge back then and he got on a little hot water for running up the Navy's credit card😅

    I was in Basic in San Diego in 70-71. I have watched a few "graduations" from various persons who went through USN Basic, either in San Diego or Great Mistakes. Here is what I want to know. Did you guys have "A" drawers and "B" drawers in your lockers? And more importantly, during your graduation ceremony, did you do the PT with the rifles and then to the "five and dive?" Just curious if they did that in Great Lakes or Orlando, and did they do that in subsequent training years after 70? Oh yeah. The "Discipline Company" where they ran the crap out of guys who were a problem. Ours was called "4850" if I recall. Anyone who can answer these questions is, 1) Salty and 2) well, we are getting old. Thanks for your service guys and gals. Doc USN 1970-1978

    Got there April 13,1966. Just remember how cold it was being from Texas at that time. Boot camp there wasn't as gun hoe as it is today. They had a shortage of Springfield 1903 rifles so we didn't get to train with them.

    • @therocketscientist0000
      @therocketscientist0000  3 года назад

      We didn't have the rifles either. I just remember shoveling snow for 6 weeks! Nothing like today's recruit.
