  • A look at the historical and iconic Green House, aka Gun School. From 1954 until it's closure and demolition in the early 2000's this building was the center of all things Gunners Mate in the US Navy, and generations of GM's in training passed through its doors.
This video is posted for educational purposes. It was produced by the DOD and USN and is therefore free for distribution. I have kept it in it's original form, as I found it.
Anybody notice the narration is done by the same guy who narrated 'Tales of the Gun' back in the late 90's? Nice touch by the production team.

My dad (Mr Swaney) didnt like being recorded too much, so this is one of the best surviving videos of him and the first time ive heard his voice in years. Im glad to see others have fond memories of 521 like he did.

I did 2 tours as an instructor and 2 tours as a student. Went to A school, AWHS, and ASROC 1980-1981. Came back to teach ASROC and AWHS 1986 to 1989. Went to MK-26 C school in 1992. Came back to teach MK-26 1994 to 1998. Great memories!

Great memories from that! I received training on the ASROC launcher in 521, and consider it a positive experience in my career. All military and civilian personnel were nice and pros. Captain Hazard was in command of NTC at the time.

Oh the memories. Spent a full year there with A School and Mk13 school. Wochester was my MK13 instructor. He was GM1 when I had him. Back in ‘01-‘02.

Thank you so much for posting this!
I went to this school in 1988, attending both 'A' school and MK42 'C' school.
It just makes me very sad now that the building is gone forever.

@@SongDadMusic Somehow, I must have missed you.
I hesitate to disclose my real name, but it's possible that we knew each other.
You probably weren't in my class group in either of the two schools that I went through, but I'll take a stab that you were.
In 'A' school, our class leader was GMM1 Jordan, a good guy.
In 'C' school, our class leader was GMG1 Salazar.
Does either of those names ring a bell?
I don't remember everyone's name, but I do remember that GMC Davis was in charge of the 'A' school barracks when I was there.

Great memories from Gun School. I remember my instructor Mr. Swaney saying, "Riley, Martin...go down to the basement and see Petty Officer Kevan!"

In A school, I fell in love with the big launchers when I saw them from the balconies of our classrooms. I spent another 6 months or so in C school for the MK26. I miss those days in the greenhouse

    3:28 - I knew this guy!
    Yep, that's GMG1 Swaney.
He was one of the instructors for the MK42 (gun system) that you can clearly see in various parts of the footage.
Some of the other instructors who were there when I was were: GMG1 Dunn, GMG1 Piechocki, GMC Reynolds, and (in charge of all of the MK42 instructors) GMCS Colbert.
The only one I didn't like was Dunn, and he didn't like me, so at least we were even.

      @@lxlBRENDONlxl No, I hadn't heard that.
      That's too bad.
He seemed like a good guy.
My instructors were mainly Chief Reynolds and GMG1 Dunn.
Reynolds seemed OK, but Dunn and I had a mutual agreement: He didn't like me and I didn't like him.

Torpedoes? kind of sad the TH rate was discontinued, I always worked side by side with TMs, I did MK42 training there. I had such a hard time keeping awake in "A" & "C" school, the slow word for word tech manual train was challenging for me. I spent most of my time standing in class. Graduated #1 in class tho.
