When there is inflation, wages should be adjusted accordingly ....DIRECTLY TO INFLATION. If workers want MORE than this, then they should be forced to get a better education FOR THEMSELVES in order to make themselves eligible for BETTER JOBS. No one should just "get more money" for doing the SAME JOB!!. A "pay raise" should be provided BECAUSE OF INFLATIONS ...AND/OR ....THE JOB HAS CHANGED TO A DIFFERENT HIGHER-PAYING JOB/TASK.
The issue is simple. If workers want MORE money than inflation, for doing the same work, they need to get a better education or occupation FIRST.
Keeping U.S. salaries going up more than inflation just means that more people will be buying vehicles from other countries. Bolstering up import prices by adding tariffs BEYOND CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES AND COST OF LIVING IN OTHER COUNTRIES .....IS WRONG. It is NOT a complicated issue. POLITICS makes it complicated.

To shauns point about the CEO's performance based salary. Even when the CEO's salary goes down it does not affect their quality of life in the same way it would a normal worker a 40% paycut for a worker could make them homeless. The CEO still has multiple houses. So yes its relative, so when people say the union is asking for too much, look at the starting wages for new workers on the new payscale and see if that's a livable wage. In The post office we start slightly higher but its still not a living wage since the new workforce is under a new reduced payscale and is under what it takes to live in places like New york or big metros in Florida. Too many industries are paying poverty wages and calling these jobs careers.
