Nice to watch your reation to the city! São Paulo is the richiest and biggest city in the country, capital of a state with the same name. As the city, is the most developed and richiest state, as if is another country inside Brazil. São Paulo's economy is diversified since there are many industries (not just foreign companies), developed agriculture and a strong sector of business. Those older buildings that you comment are not a Portuguese heritage, but they were built in the beginning of 1900's, designed most by Italian architects, since Italian immigration was huge in the state (starting at the end of 1800's). Actually, Italian descendants are a third part of São Paulo's population. However, it is inexplicable to me why people ask for a reaction to the favelas! As much as I try... I can't understand! Favela is a contingency, most people living in favelas would certainly prefer to be in areas with more space, leisure, services, security, etc. Furthermore, to many Brazilians lack an important information: favelas do not exist in most Brazilian cities (most cities in Brazil - we have more than 6,000 -... are small). Favelas are poverty areas present just in very large cities, with the highest concentration of favela (per population) being in Rio de Janeiro.

Sou nascido e criado aqui, mas apenas depois de me tornar motorista de aplicativo (6 anos atrás) que passei realmente a admirar a cidade. Conheço, e bem, a maioria dos bairros, dos pontos turísticos. The problem is that, after the fall of the Berlin Wall , "neoliberalism" swept the globe and Brazil was a big victim. We have been going through a deindustrilization process since then. Sao Paulo used to have lots of industries, but many went bankrupt or went to China. Therefore, much of what you see of the wealth in Brazil is actually the remains of what we could develop up to the 90's. After that, our development has been pretty sluggish.
Michele, nunca foi a 6a economia do mundo; chegou à 7a, caiu para 8a, e desde 2016 foi só caindo por causa da economia que teve balanço de entrada de dinheiro cada vez menos favorável ( a competitividade da indústria não acompanhou a modernização necessária e continuamos fazendo exportação quase que só de commodities). Desde o ano passado estamos empacados no 12o lugar mundial em termos de PIB. Tristemente... queria estar mesmo na 6a posição e com menos desigualdade sócio-econômica da nossa população.

São Paulo Is the biggest city of the Americans alongside City of Mexico and about 2 million bigger than NYC area.
Brazil has been between the 10 richest nations for decades, it has fallen from 5th to 10th but still very close. 2, 3 good economic years will put us on the same level as India (7x bigger population) and the UK (3x smaller population).

The problem is that, after the fall of the Berlin Wall , "neoliberalism" swept the globe and Brazil was a big victim. We have been going through a deindustrilization process since then. Sao Paulo used to have lots of industries, but many went bankrupt or went to China. Therefore, much of what you see of the wealth in Brazil is actually the remains of what we could develop up to the 90's. After that, our development has been pretty sluggish.

Michele, nunca foi a 6a economia do mundo; chegou à 7a, caiu para 8a, e desde 2016 foi só caindo por causa da economia que teve balanço de entrada de dinheiro cada vez menos favorável ( a competitividade da indústria não acompanhou a modernização necessária e continuamos fazendo exportação quase que só de commodities). Desde o ano passado estamos empacados no 12o lugar mundial em termos de PIB. Tristemente... queria estar mesmo na 6a posição e com menos desigualdade sócio-econômica da nossa população.
