- My dad loaned me a mixtape (an actual cassette!) that his friend made about 20 years ago. It contained mostly alt. 80s and 90s stuff. I got all the names of the tracks except this one. Does anyone have a clue what the song is/who it's by?
It would really be great if someone could shed some light on this - my dad's friend has since passed away, and I want to make my dad a digital copy of the mixtape. Please help!
Some of the lyrics are:
I've seen her sit alone before,
Not sure she was black and blue
I've heard her cry like this before,
And I've known about men like you
You might've treated her like something
I've seen her hide from you before,
I've seen her cower in her room.
I've heard her laugh with you before,
And I've known about men like you
You might have treated her like something
(Men like you)
You might've treated her like something
You might realize and say no, no
Realize and say no, no
Realize and say I'm done,
When you realize, say something
Will you say something?
Well I've seen her sit alone before,
Never sure she was black and blue,
And I've heard her cry like this before,
And I've known about men like you
You might've treated her like something
Men like you
You might've treated her like something
&c.
It's Say Something by Too Many Joes.
lotusbeans is there somewhere I can hear that song I can't find anything but a link to buy the album
Correct
if you found it on an old mixtape its very possible its a song by a local band.
Holy shit, didn't realise the reddit mystery was solved till now
Oh wow!!! I'm glad the song is identified!!!!

That's the song, mystery solved.
Too Many Joes - Say Something
This sounds like something they would play in those scenes at the Bronze in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Maybe if you find a list of music from that show it might come up?
my thoughts exactly! Def. has a bronze feel to it.
Reminds me a lot of the Sundays
From what I can decipher:
Well I've seen her sit alone before
Never sure if she was black and blue
Now I've heard her cry like this before
And I've know a lot of men like you
You might've treated her like something
I've seen her hide from you before
I've watched her cower in her room
I've heard her lie for you before
And I've known a lot men like you
You might've treated her like something
Men like you
You might've treated her like something
Ooh, ahh
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
When you realise, say something
Will you say something?
Well I've seen her sit alone before
Never sure if she was black and blue
Now I've heard her cry like this before
And I've known about men like you
You might've treated her like something
Ooh, ah
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
When you realise, say something
Will you say something?
Ooh, ahh
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
Realise and say no, no
When you realise, say something
Will you say something?
mrowzer You might have treated her right someday. Is the chorus i'm pretty sure.
David Self "Realized and said I'm done"
Hi Kat, even if you can't solve the mystery in time for the birthday keep trying because I found some songs I'd been searching for 25 years and I didn't know the artists or song titles. In one case the singer himself replied and helped me find it!
Get a friend to connect a tape deck to PC and make a clearer MP3 copy, then retry on Shazam.
Speak to your Dad's old pals from the area with similar tastes. They may be the only ones who even remember it. It could be an unreleased track from a very small, local, unsigned band who no longer exist or even someone your Dad used to know.
Best of luck!
I had given up for a while and just came back to resume the search and saw your comment. thanks for the tips - I'll definitely try those things!
Frank Perez Awesome!!!
I just bought the album on Amazon!
Hard to believe it has taken this long and the song is actually MP3'd on Amazon already!
It kinda sounds like if The Cranberries ripped off R.E.M's "Near Wild Heaven"
Yes! And played by the guitarist from Cocteau Twins.
Is it not the Cocteau Twins?
Solved! In 2017
Too Many Joes - Say Something.
Siri was able to identify this song for me.
It's "Say Something" by Too Many Joes.
Sounds like a song I heard in the grocery store a few times. It's most likely a local band. I would ask your dad's friends that were around that scene and see if they know. I saw your post on Reddit. I asked my grandma if she knew the band when I showed her the song and she couldn't recall but the band was so familiar to her. It is to me too but I think that's because it gives off a Cranberries vibe "Linger" type stuff.
It has been found!
Too Many Joes - Say Something (search for it here, I'm not able to post links)
I think I remember this song, it had a weird music video of a couple arguing in a bar. I kinda remember vh1 making fun of it
This music is definitely a product of the 90s Seattle music scene. Will ask my good friend Mark Hennessy of the band "Paw" (who made music similar in 1990s Seattle) if he recognizes the music. To me, it sounds like Donita Sparks from the band L7.

That's awesome! Glad to hear!
syzygy I found this cool article written on the band in 1992: articles.latimes.com/1992-08-14/entertainment/ca-5334_1_harmony-singer
By the way Kat, your my new mortal enemy......I now have an ear worm that I can't satisfy because I don't know who this is......grrrrrr....it's really a nice song.....

Too Many Joes - Say Something (search for it here as it is not allowing me to post links)
I think the third line is I've known her longer than my youth.....
it sounds like The Sundays
Almost sounds like Natalie Merchant...
Sounds like Alanis Morrisette. But there's more than one voice.
I've tried guessing what the title might be and searching for copy rights at the Library of Congress website and so far no luck. "Say Something" has a lot of hits and I might have missed it there. (cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First) . I was just able to identify the artist for my song, but still now can't find it to purchase anywhere...
Kinda reminds me of indigo girls, or maybe Maria McKee of Lone Justice....
Getting a better quality audio rip might help with Shazam or Tunatic or the like. Any chance you can get a RCA Stereo to 1/8 Stereo and capture it higher quality via Audacity or the like? I really like the song, and would love to be able to purchase a clean copy myself.
We. Found. It.
Have you tried putting this up on reddit.com? I bet you'd get an answer. Nice song
You should try looking at all of the songs by the other artists on the tape, because whoever wrote this one may have others on the tape.
Alternative takes on the lyrics:
Well I've seen it, I've seen it all before
Never sure she was black and blue
now I've heard a cry like hers before,
(unintelligable)(now none of us (idk) can (something) lie or like, you
You might've treated her like something
I've seen her hide from you before,
And I've watched her cower in her room.
Now i've heard a lie from you before
And I've (known alot of)(or)(heard a lie from) men like you
You might have treated her like something
(Men like you?)
You might've treated her like something
ooh I('ve? or after?) realize and say no, no
Realize and say no, no
Realize and say I'm done,
When you realize, say something
Will you say something?
It kind of sounds like Aggi (Annabel Wright) but also doesn't
also sounds kind of like Natalie Merchant
I'm wondering if it's a uk band bases on some of how it sounds but it could be anywhere really
or indigo girls
I'd look here but I'm not sure on a topic
www.allmusic.com/themes
The line "you might have treated her like __________ (something), I can almost hear a different word than something (maybe that was why it was never released, "something" was just a two syllable filler, that they were going to go back in and re-word ;) , nah, something "works", but perhaps they thought there were too many somethings. When I first heard it I thought maybe it was "you might have treated her like SUNDAY" (not that that makes much more sense, but lyrics are sometimes odd like that).
Black and blue? The dress? Its all connected
I've ran it against so many music idenfication apps and they all say no match found, it sounds so familiar though, maybe it was just like a local band or somebody's home music or something no idea but really freaking weird
Double d Too Many Joes - Say Something
I thought about the title first, and figured it was "Say Something", did some research, and it's Too Many Joes - Say Something
This is a really good song!
Have you tried getting a clean recording off the tape? You might consider simply archiving the tape onto CD or better yet onto your PC. Also, not that I heard any, but analog recordings can suffer a type of distortion called wow and flutter, which can cause problems with services like Shazaam, even if the distortion is barely audible to a human. There is software available that can correct this and other types of distortion, so if you can get this recording onto your PC, you might try cleaning it up a bit and trying Shazaam again.
the tape recording is actually very clean and I've run it through many sound identification apps and it still hasn't yielded any results!!
K, this song is driving me nuts, it's been stuck in my head ever since I first saw this video. Have you tried doing any research on indie/local bands that could have made this, maybe try checking into the area your dad/dad's friend lived in when the tape was made, and then checking what local bands were popular in the area at the time? I think that's probably your best bet at this point. Or maybe ask your dad if there was a club he/his friend frequented, maybe this was done by the house band of some old club. ID services like Shazam have millions of songs in their databases, so if this was mainstream, your search would have ended long ago. Sorry I can't be more useful, but the internet is a big place, so maybe someday, you'll find it. Give us all an update when you do find it.

syzygy That is frigging awesome, awesome detective work, how'd you find it?
Another user (lotusbeans) identified it, I did not find it myself, I just confirmed that it was the song.
Op, please tell me you found the song. It's pretty good and now I want a better copy.
haha no I haven't but I'll post about it if I do!
Kat Carlsen it doesn't exist
though I may be wrong I'll show my father this later and see what he thinks of it
Frank Perez holy shit your fucking right
pretty good, when's their next album dropping
Reminds me of In Demand by Texas.
This is you!
It does sound a lot like The Cranberries. It's a beautiful song. I wish I knew the name.
FLESH EATER Too Many Joes - Say Something
Cool thanks!!
It’s a generic early 90s sounding song made by a local band or made by a known band but the song was never released.
Can you put the whole song up please, then i can hear all the lyrics, thanks
my Granny says it a theme song of a movie with John Travolta and she thinks Olivia Newton John's sings it
I've never heard that particular song but I'd bet it's The Corrs. This is an Irish band of siblings - three sisters and one brother.
Sounds dead on to me!
I think your right!
you really think so? I looked into their discography and can't seem to find a song that matches!!
I do. The more I listen the more convinced I become.
maybe message the corrs on twitter or FB to see??
it sounds so familiar
Too many joes-say something
Have you tried it against Shazam or similar?
Yeah, Shazam and soundhound both came up with nothing. Googling the lyrics didn't help either
Mayhemers the song that kat is looking for record it & play it in slow motion so you can get a better listen
Kat Carlsen try recording it with a aux cord & put it on a computer so you can slow it down & get full song & lyrics
Did you ever find the answer?
If not, could you post a list of the other titles/artists on the mix? That might provide a clue.

A bit late but found the song. ruclips.net/video/9yu114pCrWY/видео.html
hey thank you! I didn't know people were still stumbling upon this post
also i love that your name is bungee gum
The very first artist I thought of was ABBA and it reminds me of the song Chiquitita and/or Fernando to be more concrete.
And even if it's not ABBA it can be a revival made by a local band. I just can't shake the feeling it's an ABBA related thing.
Did you ever figure this out?
steven dincolo OP pls
I still haven't
Kat Carlsen It's called Say Something by Too Many Joes.
still nothing?
still nothing. but I'm going to meticulously search the Library of Congress archive now!
Maybe if you rip a high quality version and start selling it on the Internet the artist will find you.. LOL.
Actually I'd pay for a clean copy of it, very catchy.
Almost 14 thousand views as of 4/10/17...that's impressive as well.
