I can give you a little history about Harry based on my personal experience. I worked a concert for him in 1979 at the US Air Force Academy. As cadets, we were able to volunteer to work concerts (setting up chairs, escorting people in, etc.) in exchange for attending for free. We also always got to meet the act in person, which was worth far more than anything else!
Harry set the standard in audience participation of concerts, believe me. He could draw us all in like no one else. Everybody loved him, he would always get everyone on their feet and singing along. He kept a gallon of orange juice at his feet and would drink from it all night. The band told us that it was half vodka, but we didn’t have the nerve to ask him, lol…
This song, Taxi, chronicled his life. He actually went to the Air Force Academy, and later dropped out. That is what he was referring to at the end of the song about his dreams of flying. He talked about getting caught staying up too late with his music, so he would have to march detention on the weekend, but instead of carrying his rifle, they made him carry his banjo as if it were a rifle. That and many other stories really got us interested in him as a person as well as musician. Everyone one of course knew of his fantastic humanitarian works and we all were extremely proud of him.
Harry and his group were very nice to us kids who worked the concert and made us feel like we were the most important people in the world when he talked to us. What a great man.
Thanks for bringing back the memories!
It's so good to see other fans of Chapin Music here! You can always count on the cheap seats!!!
I enjoyed reading about your experience. It's always refreshing to hear about performers doing good and treating workers wirh respect. Thanks again.
I totally enjoyed your post Paul CO
What a great story! I was fortunate enough to see Harry perform. You could simply tell that he was a generous, sincere, and decent dude who loved what he was doing. And who was great at it!
Thank you for the information. So interesting.
Harry Chapin and Jim Croce were masters of musical storytelling. Two of my favorite artists.
I feel the exact same way
I'd add Joni Mitchell to that short list.
Gordon Lightfoot too.
I get the same "movie" feeling when I hear "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg
That song is based on an actual incident. The woman it's about came forward after Dan Fogelberg died.
@@DashcamRiprock I have heard that. I think that's why the words and feelings in the song are so heartfelt and relatable
Here's the story: www.pjstar.com/x1101623574/Luciano-Its-a-memory-that-I-cherish
I deeply love "Same Old Lang Syne". as a bittersweet yet pleasant song that paints a vivid picture in my imagination.
Chapin could paint a picture with lyrics. Enjoyed hearing this again. It was a long, long, time ago
W.O.L.D was a good Harry Chapin song also.
Course I think all his songs are good.
Listen to "A Better Place To Be"...and "Cats in the Cradle"
Harry Chapin & Gordon Lightfoot were two of the best storytellers of 70s
The Edmond song, wow. I was just a kid when I first the song.
OMG all this time I thought that vocal solo was a woman lol
The same guy sings the deep bass parts in Mr.Tanner.
@@alanpeterson4939 wow he's got range
Chapin always referred to hin as Big John.
If you want to hear more of Big John Wallace, listen to Harry Chapin's song "Mr. Tanner". Another great song although it is one of his saddest and John is featured.
Same here!
"handed me $20 for a $2.50 fare...." You'd be lucky a twenty would cover the fare for a ride to the nearest bus stop now!
Harry gave a free concert at my high school back in 1974-Merrick NY
Mine too at Mepham High in North Belmore (next town over). I talked to him for a half hour. Down to Earth. Cool dude, that CARED about everybody. A millionaire that drove a beat-up Volkswagon Bug, wore torn jeans and old sneakers.
Great reaction! Kinda makes you want to listen to what happens next doesn't it? As others have mentioned it's called Sequel.
Harry was one of the great story tellers of his time. The other one was, of course Gordon Lightfoot. Cheers, Steve
I can picture what Harry is singing about 😊 love his songs 💚 Rest In Peace awesome man 🙏💚👍
Listen to Bob Dylans "Hurricane" and you won't have to watch the movie "The Hurricane" but you should.
He was the best musical story teller ever . By far.
Neil Young too
Jim Croce was up there with Harry Chapin and both were my favourites as storytellers
Ty, you did exactly what I did. I was thinking about the movie of my life, since hearing this song when it first came out so long ago. So many emotions…
Harry, I hope you’re seeing that your music is still stirring those emotions and making us think 48 years later.
Always loved the storytelling musicians.
Thanks Harry....Gone too soon and still with us, in a good way.
Harry Chapin " King of the Story Tellers".
You have no idea how many great stories Harry told with his music. And no idea what a great humanitarian he was.
I felt like he and I were chillin' and he was telling me his sad story. At a cafe' where we were looking out a picture window, his taxi out front. People watching so he could bear his soul to me without having to fully connect.
Harry Chapins song “Better place to be”.
Harry Chapin was the greatest story teller in music. He died at 38 in a car crash, but left behind a decade of awesome story songs. He was a humanitarian and a hell of a person. It's really great to see him getting some love and appreciation here. Thanks for this and Keep The Change!
Harry Chapin. Not Harry Chaplin...
If you want to hear a epic song from him, listen to Sniper. If you want a taste of his humor, listen to Six String Orchestra.
Orlor - or “Thirty Thousand Pounds Of Bananas”
Good ol' "Harry Chaplan"....LOL. Hopefully you will remember his name now. He was a great story telller for sure. At least you got that part spot on. He paints a great picture in your mind that allows you to be right there in the story!
This is a cool song but I like Cats in the Cradle 👍👍
Try Harry Chapins “ Album “Sniper & other love songs. Great Story Teller music
Great reaction to Harry. What a man, what a writer, what a story-teller!
Cats In The Cradle
Yolanda Johnson Without You
This is probably my favorite "story" song of all time.
Alan Lovejoy I might prefer Sequel , since it’s a continuation of Taxi... A Better Place to Be is pretty good too
I like that you like the live versions of stuff Ty. If you get the time (and in case you haven't already done so) could you please give a watch to "Brand New Key" by Melanie Safka? Love your work, makes me appreciative of real life :)
I'll tune in again for next month's Harry. Also puts in a vote for Mr Tanner.
The Great, The Brilliant, and SADLY The late harry Chapin (RIP)..such a brilliant man at telling me a story that i can sit back close my eyes and drift off to..I have always admired this wonderful man..who gave so much beautiful stories in music form to the world..his legacy left behind for all of us to love and enjoy as well as his unheralded charity work..TY for this reaction to one of my all time favourite singers..
Keep Well Keep Strong My Friend
Chap-in. Rhymes with Shape-in. Chape-in, long A.
One of the 1st, if not the 1st musician to begin doing concerts to feed the hungry. One of the great story tellers, and amazing musician.
I saw him three times. He had donation boxes at his concerts for people to donate canned foods for the hungry. I heard he did 230 concerts one year, and 130 of them were benefit concerts. The day he died, he was supposed to do another free admission, benefit concert.
armadillotoe 😂
I like "Taxi," but my favorite Harry Chapin song is "Cat's in the Cradle."
PerthTowne YES! Cats in the Cradle.
Me three. I try to sing along but always choke up. Hits too close to home...
Better Place to Be, Mr. Tanner, Sniper.
Same here.
YES .. Cats in th cradle .. so true to life. Harry has a John Denver type feel to his songs .. 1st time realizing this.
Big John singing falsetto.
This guy was a great writer. Died young in car crash.
I was wondering what happened to him.
He was 38 years old. After his death, Congress awards him the nation’s highest honor (for a civilian) for his humanitarian work.
It was actually a massive heart attack that happened just before the crash.
@ShariSez1 It's a fair cop. Thanks for the correction.
Friends of mine saw the accident shortly after. Didn't know it was Harry until they heard it later on the news.
Frist time I heard It (we won't say how long ago), I had to play it again to make sure I had heard it right. Yes, it was a movie in my mind and my heart, and still makes me cry when I think of the lost dreams of so many of us. Thanks for doing this review.
This is my absolute favorite Harry Chapin song.
The Song Sequel is continuation of the song Taxi ten years later. But as mentioned previously, Better Place To Be is a fantastic song and wait until you image the scenes taking place in this song.
Harry Chapin was such a creative story teller. Gone too soon, like so many other great talents.
That's Big John Wallace singing falsetto. He also sings baritone on Mr. Tanner.
How creepy... I saw this song and instantly remembered where exactly....... I was in 1981 when I
heard that a semi rolled on top of of his VW Rabbit. Actually the report I remember well...
said that he was in a VW Beetle... but apparently it was a Rabbit...
My favorite song of his was W.O.L.D.
His Best - Period! There must be thousands of Cabbies with similar real life anecdotes. This has to be their Anthem!
If you want Harry to play a movie in your head, try:
Mr.Tanner
Better Place To Be
Corey’s Coming
Sniper
WOLD
I Want To Learn A Love Song
The Rock
Every one you just mentioned is a great song!
Coreys Coming is one of those hidden gems... just an amazing song
@@ignacioalvarez33 Agreed
Never heard it before but it was a really great story! ☺️
You find yourself feeling like you're in the taxi. A great storyteller.
My favorite song of all-time. I guess I can quit watching your Reactions now. Just kidding.
The movie plays in my head every time I listen to this song.
Not many folks React to this one. Thank you.
But this song is perfect, IMO. Sorry, but the studio version is far superior.
RIP, Harry. You were gone way, way too soon. 🙏🏻
P.S.-It’s Chapin (Chay-pin).
One of the saddest and most beautiful songs ever written. May Harry Chapin rest in peace.
Dude, I LOVE watching you get it because I know it and it just doesn't get better than that.
Its not Chapman or Chaplin. Its Chapin sounds like Chay-pin (soft)
Harry Chaplin: What Made America Famous. An amazing song!
That's coming up definitely! I'll be requesting that March or April if someone else doesn't beat me to it.
Please do! That song is amazing." It's funny when you get that close, it's kind of hard to hate."
It always gets me and is so true.
He was great. Might want to try to listen to Jim Croce,Operator , another good storyteller. And Dan Fogelberg The Reach.
Harry Chapin (_not_ Chaplin) always nails you in the heart. No matter what he is singing. Even the song "30,000 pounds of Bananas"
Good reaction. Exactly. I saw this when it first broadcast as well. Good song and impressive live version.
MRM now that you have heard Taxi you have to hear The Sequel so you get the end of the ride but do yourself a favour 1. A Better Place to Be & 2. Mr Tanner. (Lyric) Mr Tanner was a cleaner from a town in the Midwest, but of all the cleaning shops around he'd made his the best, but he also was a baritone who sang while pressing clothes he practiced scales while pressing tails & sang at local shows.
love songs that have a singer not being overpowered by the music and you can hear the story they are telling.
If you liked this, try Dan Fogleberg.😊😊
Love Harry! Great storyteller!
I saw Harry 2 concerts in 2 days at the Fox in Atlanta. If you wanted to hear Taxi, you had to get tix for the second night, But, people with the 2 nights got to meet him after the concert. I will never forget meeting him..
Powerful. Never grows old. Beautiful.
Harry Chapin was second only to Dylan when it cam was to story writing @ the time!
Love that cello!
this is a pleasantly bittersweet nostalgic song about two people remembering events of long ago
Usually only happens to me with a good book but yes once in a while a song will do the same "mind movie" thing. Harry Chapin and Jim Croce were great at writing those types of songs. So was Gordon Lightfoot. Lol I hate it when my tounge gets wrapped around my eyeteeth as well. Lol
a movie ??? shows you how really good it is, and he was. he was killed in a head on collision, car came across the middle to his side and killed him. the drivers family found out who he was and sued his family. go figure
Not true. His car lost power on the freeway and a semi hit him from behind, causing the gas tank to rupture. Chapin's wife sued the driver of the semi and won.
@@hectorsmommy1717 sorry if i was wrong
@@jerrybutler1336 No need to apologize. Lots of events get mixed up over the years.
(Chape-in)
Harry Chay-pin
That is the genius that was Harry Chapin. By coincidence I was just thinking of making this request. Great singer/ songwriter and humanitarian. Also love hearing Big John Wallace, another talent with incredible range.
I know I'm not a patron I would be if I could afford it but disability and all but thank you to the person who requested this and thank you for doing itlong time gone now when I first came on the channel I left a long list of really good songs I think anyway, lol, and this was one of them. Ty if you like this song try same old Lang syne by Dan fogelberg story song beautiful and I'd say even one ups Taxi (the song)
you don't have to be a patreon for me to play a song. I'll write it down and it's chosen at random from my bingo ball.
Give W.O.L.D. by Harry Chapin a try. It's about a radio D.J. The live version from his album Greatest Stories Live is the best!
Like a great novelist, a gifted songwriter knows how to take the listener for a ride. Harry Chapin tells so much in his stories, such detailed descriptions, yet he leaves enough places for us to fill in the gaps in our own imaginations. At the same time, he tells of a situation most of us can identify with, bringing his audience into the story through personal experience. I do agree with what some others have commented, though. While Taxi is a brilliant song, Capin's Cat's In The Cradle is his masterpiece.
Me too. I saw the movie but it was sad. I live on Long Island I saw him a few times as a kid.... Harry's last name is pronounced CH AY PIN.. It has a long ay sound. Not sure why but it's from my home town so I'm sure. He died the day he was going to give a free concert right near where I live. He gave so much to the poor.
Sue Prost how did he pass away? Thanks 🙏
@@karenr1688 He was driving on the highway and had his hazards on. He pulled over. A tractor trailer crushed him in the car. I didn't know that at the time. His wife sued the company and she is continuing his legacy of working with the poor.
One of the most moving things ever written....!!
Me, too--I visualize story songs and books that I read.
I had harry on 8 track tapes such yummy music.
Absolutely an amazing song by an amazing singer and songwriter you should definitely check out the sequel to this song appropriately called the sequel LOL
Yes I did, Ty. Perfect picture in my head of a beautiful lady, running through rain to catch a taxi. Been a while since I heard this one too. Thank you!
freaking amazing song and story
A movie in your mind is a good description of how songs were before videos became the thing.
I have always had movies and songs playing within the matrix of my soul. Everything you can think of has been taught to us by what is presented to us via music or visual theater. Everything reminds me of a song because songs (and movies) have been about what we have been taught to feel.. Sounds crazy but its true.
that guy was easy on the ear
I was so happy you picked this gem for your reaction video. I do have this song on a 45. What a great decade of music the 70's. Harry was a great humanitarian and died in a automobile accident on July 16, 1981. RIP HARRY. Other great songs by Harry were CAT'S IN THE CRADLE, SEQUAL TO TAXI AND W.O.L.D. a song about an aging disc jockey.
Chapin = Chay-pin
He was awesome at making you feel like you are in the song!
His songs are very visual.
The studio version is much better IMO.
Harry Chapin died far too young. A good man.
I'm glad Iam not the only one who does that. It sure makes a song come to life if the song is relatible.
Great reaction......Harry did exactly what you said......watch The Sequel and The Cat's in the cradle
It's a shame this song doesn't get the love it deserves.
GOD took way too early😥😇
You can tell this was from a long time ago. You can't even get into the cab for $2.50. Especially in SF.
4/20 Ya'll😎
Gordon Lightfoot does the same thing. Paints an amazing picture. Try "IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND" and "BEAUTIFUL" by Gordon
I know you will eventually react to Sequel, you will again, paint the image of another movie as I do each time I hear these songs. Listen carefully in Sequel, for the many times he references this first song, especially the first lines.
Some day you should listen to these Harry Chapin story songs: 'Mr. Tanner', 'Mail Order Annie', 'Dogtown', 'Sniper', 'Greyhound', 'The Rock', many others. If these don't hook you on the best lyricist of the 1970's, nothing will. His 5 early albums to study and enjoy: 'Heads and Tales', 'Short Stories', 'Sniper and other Love Songs', 'Verities and Balderdash', and 'Portrait Gallery'.
love this song
@Modern Renaissance Man - Another great song to react to is "Sultans of Swing" by the band Dire Straits. Please react to a version that has the lyrics to the song written on the screen as it is sometimes difficult to understand the singer Mark Knoffler's English accent. Everyone gets caught up in Knoffler's very excellent guitar playing and the excellent drumming on this song and no one pays attention to the very powerful story telling lyrics.
THIS is why people agree that today's music, for the most part, is crap. To go from something like the lyrics in Taxi to Baby, Baby, Baby. The music from the 60's and 70's are some of the best "Story songs" you'll ever hear. Btw... His last name was pronounced Chay-pin.
It's pronounced
Chay-pin!
Master storyteller, composer and singer!
Of course, we can't forget the BEST EVER Harry Chapin song. It will make you smile for sure. ruclips.net/video/8NNwOScmSQk/видео.html. YOu really need to do this one.
Kenny Roger’s has a few songs like this, Lucille, Coward of the county, Ruby, don’t take your love to town, the gambler
I love this...Harry is my all time favorite. If you want his funny/dark side, go to" 30,000 pounds of BANANAS"
Hey Ty, you mentioned “Menace to Society”. That film was actually based on a song that wasn’t included in the film, written and performed by Chill E. B., a rapper who some of your viewers might remember from the early 90s. I worked with him for a little while so this story came straight from him. I think you all would like to hear his “Menace to Society”. I used to watch it on MTV and loved it.
ruclips.net/video/5JxCXijP3Cc/видео.html
🎶Through the too many miles, and the too little smiles ….I still remember you🎶 Imho, one of the most hauntingly-poignant/poetic/introspective lyrics ever.
Harry Chapin was a musical composer/ storyteller who was up there with the very best. Check out 'W.O.L.D'. and also 'Cat's in the Cradle'.
