  • Situated on the banks of the Yagachi River at a distance of 38 km from Hassan, 220 kms from Bangalore -Belur is a world famous tourist destination.
At different times in history it was known as Velapur, Veluru and Belapur. The town is famous for its Chennakeshava Temple which is one of the most beautiful examples of Hoysala architecture.
The construction of the temple began during the reign of the Hoysala Emperor Vishnuvardhana.
Raja Vishnuvardhana installed the idol of Chennakeshavaswamy in 1117 CE with the blessings of his master Sri Ramanujacharya after his victory over cholas. The temple is thus known as the Vijayanarayana Swamy Temple.
The temple construction work continued for 103 years and was completed during the reign of Vishnuvardhana's grandson, Immadi Veera Ballala.
The Hoysala period of South Indian history began about 1000 CE and continued till 1346 CE. In this period, they built around 1,500 temples in 958 centres.
It was the early capital of the Hoysala kings. The city was so esteemed by the Hoysalas that it is referred to as "earthly Vaikuntha" (Vishnu's abode) and "dakshina Varanasi" (southern holy city of Hindus) in inscriptions.
Hoysalas used soap stone for the delicate carvings
The temple stands on a wide platform terrace (jagati) about 3 feet high. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu in the form of Keshava. Chennakeshava Temple is a fine example of artistic excellence in the finest carvings made in stone.
Inspired by Shantala Devi’s beauty, king Vishnuvardhana had built numerous celestial female figures called 'Madanikas' in the temple of Chennakeshava in Belur, Karnataka. As per estimations, there are about forty-two 'Madanikas'. Shantala Devi was an epitome of beauty and sculptors were also inspired by her grace. Hence, sculptures were carved meticulously and all of them are in poses of Bharatanatyam. There is a polished stone platform in the hall of the Chennakeshava.
The Belur temple complex along with the nearby Hindu and Jain Temples at Halebidu have been proposed to be listed under UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
