This guide will help you upgrade your drums to have sound reactive LEDs. This build uses a mic amp sensor and Gemma to light up NeoPixels to the beat of your drums. The cost of this build is considerably lower than other kits. Its also compact, rechargable and mobile!

Wouldn't a piezo provide more isolation than a electret mic?
AWESOME I've been thinking of doing something like this with my set and this gave me all the answers and resources I needed ....now just to figure out how to trigger the lights with my midi drum loop as well so each drum light triggers as the midi note to the corresponding drum plays
Took a while to the Gemma working but switched to an older computer and it worked fine.
I have been waiting for something like this, only for speakers i have (15" and 18" woofers), and use for parties / events. Always thought it would be cool to light up the speakers with something sound activated and intricate like this. I think though the code will have to be tweaked to make for a better effect and the shape of the lights, but i guess that's all part of the fun.
Excellent build as usual Adafruit! But I have a question, is there a way to have the volume or intensity of the hit determine the color produced?
I've never been successful with those electret mics when playing in a large band. They pick up your sound, but also the other instruments.
Jay Converse stupid question: aren't they, or shouldn't they be just plain, simple dumb piezo mics, like the V-drums and they cheap junk?
Couldn't you use the brain box as a controller? It already understands the signal, and even two types of hits (louder and quieter) on the older TD-12s, as I have.

Could you recommend a solution (piezo) to help with isolation? We tried this at our gigs and the ambient noise was so loud that the lights were just perpetually on until we ended the gig.
Could this be modded with with an RPI so that you can write a scripted sequence for the lights to react to for a specific song?
Can you regulate the sensitivity of the leds?

I have a question. Do you need a Gemma with each drum? or can the Gemma handle multiple drums? is there a maximum amount if so? thanks
Would this work with Roland mesh head drum pads?
I'm curious to know if this could be done in Taiko Drums.
Notice how he uses his fingers to make the lights go on? That's probably because using a drumstick causes too much vibration and will cause the one next to it or potentially all of them to light up when you hit only one drum!!
not necessarily. you can program the mics to only pick up certain sound samples or frequencies.
Can I use some UV black light led strips from amazon with this method? Thnx!

Second question: Im ok with computers like most people average but i'm certainly no programmer. Also as far as electronics, Im a guitar builder. I know enough for guitar electronics pots pickups etc . But my electronics knowledge is certainly limited . I cant really read a schematic for example but I can a wiring diagram.
Im telling you all this because with this knowledge is this something that a person like me can learn without a huge learning curve? Thanks
I notice the kick drum triggers the tom lights to go and your not hitting the drums with sticks so im guessing there is no adjustability on the sensitivity of the mics? which would just mean that every time you hit any drum all the lights would go
It's difficult to isolate with air-based microphones. We're developing something on our channel that uses contact mics instead.
Lights4Drums.com RUclips Channel I'm trying to do this, but with MIDI triggers. That way I can use DMX to program light sequences and other cool stuff.
njoydq Use piezoelectric sensors, you can buy the sensor alone for pretty cheap, or you can them in a housing that connects to the drum (called a trigger). This usually converts to a 1/4 inch male output. You might need to do some signal processing to reduce noise but for lighting purposes it probably would not really matter. You could add a variable resistor (potentiometer) to control the sensitivity.
Potentiometer is the best bet. Buy one thats like 50k. see the sinistivy on it then buy the desires variable resistor that gives good range a control. This is essentially a rectifier circuit. I made one back in HS.
For this build is it possible to use a piezoelectric sensor instead of the Mic sensor. Just curious if you can swap those parts and still have the same effect.
mrtritom22 yeah, that's what I kinda said. They're not as sensitive. Might even have a very sophisticated brain box (as in Roland V-drums) lying around already. Or an inexpensive piezo setup as in some guitar amps.
The earlier brain boxes (TD-12s) are great at understanding two types of hits. Newer ones do much more.
I'd like to see this in fiber optics. Be way easier to hide and live with. Should be used for more than cheap Christmas trees sold at the drug store.
I think you have to be MIDI, even though I dislike a lot of the applications. For speed, you'd have to, I'm told.
i still don't get it, is there a mic in each drum or just one ? and if so how is the sound picked up
There's a small. Mic in each drum. The sound is picked up by that Mic and sends the info to the brain which tells the light to flash
tempted to do this to my kit for funsies. can it be made that sensitive at higher volumes or do the mics bottle out a bit and everything just glows full brightness?

If I wanted to control the color via switches (say three switches for one color each) and have them fade away instead of having the gradient effect of your example and I'd like to have them triggered by actual drum triggers, how would I have to change the code you provided on your website and is an Adafruit enough or would I need a full Arduino kit for that?
Also potentiometers for fade-out time, threshold and minimum brightness would be great but I really don't know much about programming.
Since this is 9 YEARS OLD , you MUST have something with newer technology !!!
