  • A review of Sofia Coppola's 'Priscilla'. I'm a fan of Coppola's work and she has wowed us, yet again! I really don't like most recent biopics (and I explain why in this video) but was this movie an exception? Priscilla is a 2023 American biographical drama film written, directed, and produced by Sofia Coppola, based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon. It follows the life of Priscilla and her complicated romantic relationship with Elvis Presley.

I love how this is the flipside to the same coin that was baz luhrmans elvis last year. That movie was loud and big and brash and colourful while priscilla is a much smaller, thoughtful and intimate movie. Both of their stories were so sad, elvis was a prisoner of fame and abuse from the colonel while priscilla was the classic bird in a cage. And what happened to lisa marie was so so tragic

I really enjoyed the film. But am sick with the whole time being different excuses like it was wrong then and now. If a celebrity today is in a relationship being a 14-year-old today people are disgusted. I still enjoyed the film and rewatched it more times than I would like to admit to. I liked how when we first see the house it is glamorous and loud and full, by the end you want to leave the house since it is quiet and lonely. I also just liked the aesthetic and style of the film which I think helped with the idea of her life from the outside being glamorous and beautiful. I know people complained about Jacob being taller than the real Elvis but I think it was great to show the age difference between the two. I thought the actress of Priscilla did a really good job.
Fashion is a huge part of this film, especially with Priscilla In the beginning she wears more teenage childish outfits with cardiages skirts necklaces messy brown coloured ponytails etc, then when she gets with Elvis and moves in she dyes her hair black, and her makeup and clothes are more Elvis, by the end she dresses differently and different makeup and hair stopped being huge. By the time she leaves him it shows how she had changed due to Elvis and getting control when she left while Elvis is still dressed in an Elvis-like costume.
I enjoyed all of the actors and acting in the film and how it showed the themes well of loneliness etc. Sorry for going on for so long I'm just so passionate about Priscilla/Elvis-related.

You don't need to share blood with someone to be their real parent. I think Priscilla considers the man who raised her to be her father, and he considers her his daughter, and that's why the technicality wasn't included in the movie. It's simply not relevant to either of them. I can't speak to what either of Priscilla's parents were thinking, letting her move in with a grown man as an underage girl, but listening to Priscilla talk about her family and vice versa, it doesn't seem to reflect a lack of care.

My review: I watched the movie. 0/5. The casting is soooo bad that it’s makes the inaccurate storyline just cringy bad from scene to scene. I was shocked that somebody actually approved this to go into theaters. It’s not even TV movie quality- more like freshman student grade from a nepotism C student that got help from a family member. Seriously folks, the story is not true. Zero evidence - there is no person that ever lived and not one shred of evidence that corroborates that any of this ever happened. And Priscilla is clearly lying here. Film was the worst I’ve ever seen in a theater.
None of this stuff probably ever happened. She paints a picture in the movie that Elvis was a creepy child molester - yet tells a judge in real life that she DEMANDS TO BE BURIED RIGHT NEXT TO HIS COFFIN SIDE BY SIDE FOR ETERNITY IN HIS BACKYARD!!!! .. even though she divorced him 50 years ago and has had a child with another man and her own life with other people for half a century. Priscilla ruined her own credibility when she stole millions of dollars from Elvis trust without her own daughters consent. She stole from her child. She is an untrustworthy gold digger and fraudster.

Elvis was not a giant and Priscilla was not a midget. In real life he was not even a foot taller than she was. He did not leave her alone, isolated in Graceland. There were many other people in the house. She shortly graduated highs school and he bought her a car and she had a bottomless credit card. Many people have said they were friends with Priscilla and did a lot of things with her despite her trying to make it look like she was isolated. In the book he threw a chair but not at her. A record flew off of it and hit her. In the movie she has him throwing a chair at her. There were other things.

You started this off by saying you were not dragging Elvis or Priscilla as actual people but therein lies the problem... they're actual people not characters to analyze. The movie is wildly inaccurate to the person Elvis Presley was in real life, the person Priscilla Presley is in real life, and their relationship. Sadly, you'd have to know a lot more about both to know just how inaccurate it is at telling the story of their relationship or her life story but that is also the problem with biopics, people assume they're getting accurate information instead of leading them to extremely false conclusions which in this case is that Elvis was a controlling abuser that groomed his innocent naive victim Priscilla who is without flaw or mistake because that is how Priscilla has been telling the story since after Elvis died but the real truth about her is much different. The actual truth about Priscilla, the movie or the person, once you know more about her is that it is really the story of an unreliable narrator.

between your comments on your Once Upon A Time adoption issues and this comment about her step dad not being (obviously) her bio-dad and that "maybe influencing" how protective he was of his stepdaughter really rub me the wrong way. I obviously am not involved with Priscilla or her mom, but her bio-dad died the same year she was born, and her mother married her step dad 3 years later, so that step dad raised Priscilla and acted as her father. Even the clip you play has Priscilla talking about how her parents (emphasis on that plural) were freaking out and didn't know what to do, which indicates there's not a huge chasm there. I know many people aren't that aware of how adoption can affect you/families, but it's time for society to start listening because these types of things, this type of dialogue can be really problematic.

The longer story: Elvis was not a pedophile. Priscilla was IN GERMANY and dating for 95+% of her teen years.
Elvis was busy in the US making movies dating 20s somethings such as Natalie Wood and Ann Margaret. There was NO TIME or LOGISTICS for "grooming" or sex. There was an OCEAN in the way!!
LMOST IMPORTANTLY --- There was NO SEX and NO MARRIAGE until Priscilla was of age.
Priscilla stated that she was a VIRGIN on the night of her wedding. Priscilla was 23 years old when she gave birth to Lisa Marie.
So this was NOT outrageous like it is today with teens having babies at 14 years of age.
Lastly, AGE OF CONSENT in the United States was 16 years old in the 1960s. So no sex or no marriage until both sides were at least 16 years old. Priscilla was IN GERMANY from the age of 14 through 17.
So Elvis didnt have a chance to even see her again until she was almost 18 and by then it was perfectly fine for them to have sex BUT HE DID NOT BECAUSE he was thousands of miles away making movies and dating adults.
They wouldn't have sex until after marriage when she was 21..
So it was IMPOSSIBLE for Elvis to have been a "pedo" by today's standards or 1960s standards.

The problem was, she could not do the one thing she wanted to do which was to go into show business, the ambition that she hid from Elvis when she married him (because she knew that he did not want a wife in show business). She stayed with him just long enough to get the best settlement, left him, got her money and got herself a movie agent. She conned Elvis into marrying her, used him, robbed him in divorce court and is now trying to make herself look like the victim. Elvis loved her and when she left him he went down and down and died.

More Priscilla crap. Elvis still loved her but she in no way cared about him. When she took him back to divorce court, she took him for so much money that he had to sell the rights to his old hits causing him to have to live off just what he got by touring. Out of that he had to support himself, his family, all the families who worked for him and keep paying Priscilla ridiculous amounts of money every month. Then when he was close to death in 1977 she put a lien on Graceland.

*Context. He shouldn’t even had called her at all. Of course, whenever he’s in between girlfriends or feeling like it he calls the hopeful teen girl for a nice distraction. Don’t EVER put hope in the heart of a child about a possible romance. As the adult it’s his job to make firm of the boundaries.
The moment he came across her at 14, even if was in passing and not with a romantic undertone, it threw out any normal dynamic for a future relationship. She’s no longer an option, and it’s not right.
Even if you view the courting period as ‘not grooming’ you can’t deny he got the desired result: he got her to marry him, to mesh and depend on him, to change her physicality and be submissive to his lifestyle compared to his other more headstrong and older girlfriends.
He would’ve kept her like a pet for far longer if he could’ve. colonel and management strong armed him for having a young unmarried girl in his house. They had to get married. It was a bad look and not a secret. I don’t know what Elvis’s long term plan was with her.

Elvis had morality clauses in his contract and he was blowing them. Playing the field whilst a teeny bopper was sitting on a pedestal at his home. Virginal and visually morphing into his mother. 👀 seven years or however long they played this weird game where he got his rocks off without tarnishing her virginity; just heavy petting and acts. Yeah… it’s off coloured, man.
The colonel was pissed, her father was pissed. Colonel Parker (Elvis' manager) said quote: ‘Either you should get married or go on. If you’re not getting married, then what are you doing?’"
They were living in unmarried sin and her father was so frustrated with this he said he’d go after Elvis for travelling over state lines with his then minor daughter.
You can’t pretend Elvis wasn’t playing a really dumb game here.

@@surette2012 Elvis had his faults but I never believed he forced Priscilla to go to Graceland or create a sort of illusion. Priscilla and her family knew what they were doing and who he was. Maybe he only thought at the beginning she could be the right one. Her parents saw the deal and built their trap. We have only her version of facts and she has changed her narrative so many times that it's hard to believe her anymore. This movie has taken all the bad parts of the book, put together to show the story with a specific purpose. That book was written in 1985..she herself claimed many things in it were over-dramatized to be sensational .Priscilla molded herself to be what Elvis preferred, trying to be interesting to his eyes, pushed by her mother, because she didn't want to lose the opportunity to be Mrs Presley. Too easy now to give faults to him as he was the controller. In this movie they don't show her affairs in the marriage and that she left him for a married man who was waiting for a child from his wife. Priscilla was not a saint. This movie is pure garbage especially for this reason. Facts are distorted and specially selected to show Elvis as the monster and her as a pure innocent girl. Relationships are more complicated than this. Judging their story with today's parameters is absolutely useless and unfair.
