“Paint more minis” is absolutely the best piece of advice for beginners or old hands alike, the more you paint the better you get. If I could add one more piece of advice beyond what is in the video it is, don’t compare your work to what other people have painted as this can get discouraging. The only person you should compare yourself to is….you, compare your latest painting to things you’ve painted in the past and see the improvement over time.
When I compare myself to the Content Creator I feel like I'm no good, when I look at the first model I ever painted "oh shit, I am freaking amazing now." and I am not a big painter.
I think it's good to keep in mind you don't have to just paint GW stuff. Just grabbing a cheap $1-3 Reaper Bones mini you think looks neat can give you practice without having to hemorrhage money.
"I am not an artist" I actually had to pause in stupefied disbelief. You could not be more wrong, Jay! You make art! You use your perspectives and choices to bring things to the world that did not exist before. That's Art, baby! Nick too!
We have to abandon the old-fashioned idea that "artists" are stuffy, canvas-painting eccentrics. Cartoonists are artists, podcasters are artists, blender modelers are artists, website builders are artists, if you make something that didn't exist before, you're an artist, and you should celebrate your art. That's my position on it :)
Hey man, just wanted to let you know how much you have helped me recently. I was at hospital with a brain tumour and was waiting to be operated on. I was already operated in 2015 (2 x Awake surgeries, chemo & radiotherapy). I was told that this was definitely going to expand onto the cancer that they couldn’t get within 6 months, but luckily it didn’t. Not until a few recent MRI’s had shown that there was growth. I went in in the 28th November and woke up and couldn’t move my leg or arm and couldn’t speak properly and the next day I was told I had a stroke. I eventually was sent home 2 and a half weeks later (a week before Christmas Day). Anyways, I have always been such a lover for mini modelling, especially Warhammer 40,000! But I never got to pick up a set ever. You have such a great attitude and over the last few months you have expanded my knowledge from painting, bases and I have so much fun each day learning new tricks, tools and tips! From being an absolute noob with my first group of space marines, you give me hope through my chemotherapy to get away from the real world for a-bit. Thank you!
"I like a black primer, because it makes everything on the model completely dark" ... not shit, what a revelation. This changed my entire view on priming minis. Joking aside, great video with nice "step by step" inceases in difficulty for the different techniques used. Also: the witch and the jester look ridiculously good.
"Make my toys, how they look in my head" is literally how I paint after all this time! I still use the "colouring book" method however,it's so soothing for me.
Now this is 9 minutes of basically my own painting journey, although im currently not quite through all the steps, i can see thats leading there - and im glad this video exists now, bc i dont feel so isolated in my painting progress and im almost certain that it will serve this way for others too - wish you all the best everyone!
As always, super entertaining and crammed with practical advice. I picked up my first airbrush kit after watching for the past few weeks and deciding to give it ago with all the practical instruction in your videos. Awesome work!
You always say you’re not an artist, but for how many years you’ve been doing this you’ve really become one, and a very respectable one at that. You’re a great painter
This is your best video yet! At least for me, covers everything in less than 10mins so I can now get the full context on all the speed based ways to paint!
Gorgeous models, really loved what you said about lighting for that witch. It's making me really consider doing something similiar with lightning claws.
Very enjoyable! Paint eyes early so you do not wind up with be bug-eyed stare. If concerned about overspending the eyes, use a little museum tack over the eyes once they are dry. If using washes, use a smaller brush (tip) and less ink/paint to carefully flow around the eyes.
That is clever advice! Going to try it! Paint the eyes when you've got nothing to loose. And it is easier to tidy up the edges of the eyes when you don't have a lot of surrounding.
Well it's possible to schedule video release time for RUclips content, so this video could technically have been made 9 days ago at 03:47 AM, uploaded and set to release today at 06:00 AM. =p
This is such a great intro to painting, showing each way to paint and how they all build off each other. Very very cool. I mean, you basically taught people 75% of how to do OSL in two minutes. Also, yay more awesome Lazy Squire Games minus, but this time STLs. I don't have a 3D printer, so I don't have to buy them, yay. . . . and will instead buy whatever one they do next. Still, models look wonderful, especially that jester.
I try not to use washes for detail except on metallics but only because I like to use the way they dry glossy relative to the more matte-finish paints as an effect like putting agrax(or equivalent homebrew), over intentionally badly-layered brown on a black base for full-grain leather or giving guns/tools a coat of nuln(or equivalent) to impart a mechanical sheen.
I haven’t watched this full video yet, but hey, thanks for all the great content man! I love your videos and have been watching for many years and hope for more, recently printed 3 squads of death lords infnatry and been taking my time. Enjoy my friend the fun of painting and enjoying what you’ve accomplished! 🇦🇺
painting simpler minis is also a great way of practicing highlights and color transitions before moving on to more complex stuff. A mini with a lot of tiny details means a lot of extra opportunities to screw up, but a simpler mini is easier to fix and gives a bigger surface area to practice on. Take OSL for example, a simple town guard/ peasant carrying a torch leave few materials to focus the OSL on compared to the witch in this video. The simpler the mini the easier to attempt almost any technique on, and a well made simple mini can be just as beautiful as the jester in the video. At least that is my experience :)
Very inspiring but I’m only a few hours into my miniature painting journey and still at the point where I am figuring out which basic parts (base, shade, dry-brush highlight) to do what order coz I’ve seen a few big beginner videos that mix these steps in different ways.
Unfortunately when I started in 3rd edition 40K I learned a drybrush heavy painting style. I'm now (after a many year break from painting) unlearning this and have moved on to zeni with speedpaint and washes. I haven't quite built up the confidence for the final highlight stage though.
Re: zenithal highlighting with a color other than white- would you use a red zenithal to do warm highlighting? I'm thinking about how to do the new Commander Dante model (and potentially new Sanguinary Guard) and would like to do a warm gold armor (possibly doing NMM over the zenithal if that's possible).
Wow, such a cool tutorial video, thaks! When highlighting the contrast/glaze layers, do you mix white with the contrast colour or do you use a similar acrylic tone and add white to it?
When do you apply the Washes in the Zenithol method? Or do you just completely remove those steps? Also, what are your thoughts on the Slap Chop method which seems to be just dry brushing over the Zenithol > Highlight phase.
Would this be considered slap chop? I recently got a board game with minis and was looking for this type of inspiration. I don’t paint anything like this, but I feel I could pull something like this off. Even if I were to do just the black prime, the highlight method and the base color, the figures would look nice.
I just straight up refuse to highlight my minis. I have fun doing the coloring book method and slapping some wash on it. I don't have the best looking minis, but that's how I enjoy painting. That to me is what makes the process worth it. Having fun and stopping when you aren't any more.
I only highlighted one of my 10 minis ive made The red guard from gloomhaven jaws of the lion He indeed is my best looking mini because of this but eh. Dont feel like highlighting the others
Thank you so much for this vid, I have been doing stuff between the second and 3rd step for so long and been trying to figure out how to do better. How would you do a zen shade without an airbrush? I dm for a home dnd game and 3d print my own minis and haven't invested into an airbrush yet.
Me searching videos to find out how to do face detail (that for some reason everyone glosses over and doesn't seem to consider something worth covering but it's like they're tiny how do you do an eye) watching this and seeing you free hand a perfect eye super easy even with a bit of shake. Why 😢
People need 3 skills to paint anything at hobby level no matter the hobby itself: Color theory application (for improving aesthetics), brush control (this goes beyond painting highlights), and paint behavior (so you guys finally graduate from overpriced acrylics).
On the highlighting remark...you call it your favorite here, but in the custodes video, you mention you hate it and think it's a waste of time. Is there an inside joke I'm missing?

those figures are bonkers. the painting is also top notch
Some great tips for getting stuck in and painting with different techniques. Few things I certainly want to try here :)
Fantastic video! Really good break down of building different techniques.

This was a really good one. I have my judgement minis on the way and plan to do them in this style.
You are most definitely a Artist
The third technique make me think about slap shot, only using contrast and makind the detail first
The jester turned out super sick
no Jay, my friend, you are an artist.
Awesome ! Clear, useful and with always this little touch of joyfulness. Thank you !
Man they look so good
This is really fun. I discovered that your videos are great. I am a genius for my discovery.
