British Major Ivan Hirst salvaged the remnants of Volkswagen at the end of WW2, placing it in trust with the British military until a new ownership group could be arranged. He oversaw the reintroduction of the ‘saloon’ (aka Beetle), after resurrecting the Wolfsburg factory and re-assembling the tooling necessary to build it from the various places they had been stored after Wolfsburg was put into war production. Volkswagen has a complete, detailed history of this era.
