im usually a really secluded and shy person, so showing emotions in dancing comes super slow to me. i've actually just started to take dancing seriously for about 2 years (i'm 13 btw), and i just started to actually try to put out everything as my best. i'm also really slow when it comes to picking up things, esp choreo, so it takes a while for me to actually memorize a number. but when i do, i only have like about 1 month- a week before recital comes in for me to actually make the dance my own and to add feeling into it. and there are some people in my classes that can memorize majority of the choreo or memorize it entirely in 15 minutes. ive been trying to improve my ability to pick up choreo, and my ability to input emotion into what i do. :)) this really helped me understand to concept of dancing with emotion. thank you for this
Don't feel bad. I've been dancing for like 3+ hours a day for 8 years. I've made it all the way to the professional level and I struggle to feel pleasure and joy while dancing because im so focused on being perfect 🙃🥲🥲 people are so critical and it can be tough not to hear those mean voices in your head while dancing. How did that recital go ? Usually once you get to the show and stage, all your problems leave ^^
I’m so delayed on responding to a lot of my comments (I’m sorry!). I’m SO happy this video was able to help you!! I was just thinking of adding a video about how to help with memorizing choreography, so maybe I will make that next!! :)
I always put pressure on myself. I always want to be the best. When i dance, i think about the lyrics. If its sad, i think of the worst memory. Sometimes, i even cry. This made me better as a dancer
I’m so delayed on responding to a lot of my comments (I’m sorry!). I totally understand what you’re saying, because I to tend to put a lot of pressure on myself as well to be excellent, but I have to remind my self often that I dance because of the way it makes me feel and the “art” I get to showcase. I actually encourage my students to cry if that’s where the song or dance takes them emotionally. It’s not very often we get a safe space to release those emotions and sometimes we don’t even realize we need to get those emotions out, and it’s so therapeutic!!
I’ve never heard anyone suggest looking in the mirror to see how your face changes when expressing different emotions. Super helpful. I tend to blackout when i dance in front of a mirror so i dont really see myself, just the silhouette. Thank you.
i’m so sorry i’m literally 10 months late lmfao but i’ve been dancing competitively for 12 years and it honestly gets easier overtime. not saying it’ll take 12 years but it will take some time. it sometimes even gets to the point where i know what steps are coming up because of the steps before it hahahaha. remembering choreo takes time. my tips would be just watch tutorials of combos and learn 1-2 a week. it will help your brain. hope you’re successful!!
I’m so delayed on responding and going through all of my comments (I’m sorry!). Yes, I agree with the comments above that repetition is key for improving your memory, but I was actually thinking of uploading a video to talk about helpful ways to remember choreography more, so maybe I will do that next!
Thank you, Amanda. This is just what I was looking for! I have a boy dancer and he can pick up choreography quickly but at the competitions, the judges make comments like, find a variety of expressions that feel good, or your body has so much energy would love to see your face match that. I am not a dancer, so I didn’t really know how to help him work on that. I am excited to share your video with him. I took copious notes (the teacher in me) and feel better able to help guide him now. The part about musicality was especially helpful. Knowing what the song is about helps to connect to the music. He does a lot of hip hop solos, and I am not even sure what they are saying half the time. Also, I don’t really know if I want to know. 😊 Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Oh my goodness I am so happy that my video was able to help him!!! I would love to hear a follow up if he was able to apply these tips and how they helped! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much 💓 my mum showed me this video and it is so helpful 👍 every time I perform on stage they say I have amazing technique and beautiful lines but I need to work on facial expressions and confidence. This video really helped me understand how to express emotion in my dance and I can't wait to take my dancing to the next level 😄 amazing video and tips. Everyone who sees this have an amazing day and good luck on your emotion in dancing xxxx
Amanda, thank you for giving valuable tips on how to express one's feeling thru movements. I am a beginner and trying to learn the fundamentals. My friends say that I look like a robot when dancing. How to inject emotions to the movements especially fun, excitement and love. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your video. I was really struggling with some choreography, and even smiling during my performances and really got down on myself after a dress rehearsal. I really related to dancing because you love to dance and having fun and sharing that with the audience literally in 24 hours I found my confidence and had so much fun opening night.
Thank you for sharing this! Trying to explain all of this is not easy. One of my dance students shared it with me, and this is what I have been trying to say. From one dance instructor to another, thank you!
This video has help me so much! Although I’m not a dancer I do aerial silks I’ve been competing for a couple years now and my biggest flaw would be my face and body language I’m a very anxious person so letting myself not care what others think about me is hard. This tips have help me immensely
My teacher told me to show more emotion which I could but when we’re dancing to that sad emotional music and I pull my emotion out, I tend to get sad and then I’m not in the mood for anything else 😂I don’t wanna dance I don’t wanna rehearse I just want to go home and weep
I’m so delayed on responding to all of my comments (I’m sorry!). I’m so happy you enjoyed this video and I’m very excited to hear how your competition went!!! ❤
@@AmandaTanigawa Yes! Thanks so much for reminding me, I got first place!!! Not to mention the part where I was so nervous I started crying before hand, but I won!!!❤
This was great i like lyrical contempory jazz is kinda my thing I have been into that my whole life but i am just starting to like develop it i guess i hsve not been in real classes yet it just has been a myself thing. I am not that flexible with leaps and illusions and stuff. And that makes it hard to learn Choreography. Its really difficult and i dont know how to help that. I want ro be in classes just hasnt happened because there isnt much places. And i juys havent gotten in any.
