@@mariskakingma204 I think you mean metre, not cm, which would mean he's not human is so small. he's just over 2m tall, & certainly not 2,5, but rather, about 2,05
The Springboks special ordered him 2 x 75kg dumbbells because the ones they had weren't heavy enough. One for each arm. That's 160 lbs each arm! AND he can run full speed and tackle for 80 mins.....
3:35 "Gotta be like 6'4" at least" Bro, he's 6'8" (~203cm). I've had the honour of attempting to tackle him in high school and getting wiped. Let's just say this: My ego and dreams of playing professional rugby vanished after that incident xD. Schoolboy stories are the funniest though. To be fair, I'm only 6'1" (188cm). He was a beast back then though with height, weight and technical superiority , even at age 15-16, and we all knew he would become a Springbok without a doubt. Extra info: Although I was only 188cm, I did weigh around 90kg at the time. Still no match for Eben. I remember him gaining a lot from ages 15 to 18. Each year he'd progressively get bigger and bigger but following a natural curve of weight gain (say 5-9kg a year). While in 10th grade and walking in the school passage between classes, I remember seeing this giant 9th grader (Eben) walk past me and one of my classmates remarked, "Hierdie ou is kak goed in Rugby" which means "This dude is f'in good at Rugby". He wasn't wrong although I arrogantly thought that he was "too skinny" and probably not that good. My opinion changed when we met him during rugby practice... Another silly story I remember: There was a fight at school, or rather a verbal confrontation I should say, between two groups of dudes. I vividly remember Eben (17 at the time) coming from the shadows, towering over everyone and making his way through the crowd to the middle where people were shouting. I stood far away and couldn't hear anything, but he already had his intimidating smile at that time. Everyone went quiet, he said something which was inaudible to me and everyone parted and walked away. Random photo of what he looked like in school: i.prcdn.co/img?regionKey=C9pGkpC1aRe1%2F8QOJA%2By%2Bw%3D%3D 2023 Story update: I remember when he got into grade 8 and joined the high school. He was a short, skinny guy. I'd say about 153-158cm and about 55kg. He played backline as mostly a wing, if I recall correctly. Sometimes he played centre, flyhalf and fullback. He was in the B team, not even the A team, up until like 11th grade. Now, it's important to note that he had a gigantic growth spurt and grew about 50cm and picked up over 50kg. It's very rare you see someone from being a track athlete sprinter and high jumper, playing wing and growing into a giant lock, being too heavy to even be lifted in the lineout ito the averge high school player. Being in the backline gave him the ability to be a good runner and agile player. Also, to dispel a popular myth: No, he's not a dumb guy. He's quite intelligent. I'm not saying he's a genius or anything, but he had relatively good marks, definitely way above average. He also wasn't aggressive: yes, his two uncles Cliffie and Skattie were (unfairly) infamous for bar fighting, he was quite the opposite and learned a lot from his straight and narrow father who's a policeman. Regarding his uncles, they were extremely nice people the few times I had the honour of meeting the legends. It was mostly arrogant drunkards who would challenge them as simpletons do. Sometimes, they would stand up for others only to be later called the aggressors. I'm not saying they never caused trouble, especially when times were tougher for them, but the "toughmen uncles" I got to meet and talk to were genuinely nice people.
Lol like my story of just knowing Natalie Du Toit from primary school. She would always be #1 in swimming... No I did not compete though. 😂Heck I couldn't swim even. But we knew she would be great. ♥️
Awesome story man👍 I've been watching the Springboks since the days of Jake White back in 2004 when they won the then Tri-Nations and at the time there wasn't a lock forward more intimidating than Bakkies Botha. The first time I heard of the name Eben Etzebeth was during the 2015 RWC and I immediately said this guy is special. You were one of the few lucky ones that witnessed greatness at it's grassroots. Nice Vid. Yeah Eben Etzebeth is known in South Africa as the Enforcer. One of South Africa's most capped Springbok. Everything was handshake deals and neither of them ever strayed. Was a massive ambassador for the game, eventually succumbing to his kidney disorder at 40. Taken far too young and most people wouldnt know he played his last proffessional game which was an exhibition match inbetween daily dialysis treatments. Bit of a long comment but definatly a very interesting guy
@@stepdify oh yeah. How dare you share such useful & relevant information that just proves our point at what a Legend Jonah is... (please note the sarcasm).
Eben is probably not the most feared rugby player in the world, but he could well be the Springboks most feared player, he does have a history though and best to walk away from him in a crowded bar!!
In South Africa we have some big strong and mobile lads, which is why our guys are so sought after by the European Clubs. Springboks aside, another powerful fast runner was Jonah Lomu who played on the wing for the All Blacks. Most amazing was that at 1.95 meters and 118kg this guy was at full speed within a few yards. Not someone you wanted to tackle head on.
Eben is absolute gentle giant off the field. Looks deceive as he so far in his career was hardly ever sanctioned for violence on field. BUT rub him up wrong he will take you on by just staring you down and that is a frightening sight down Look for a game in 2022 against Australia (2nd test) and you will see what I mean
Etsebeth is 6.8 and weighs about 260 pounds. But consider this, Jonah Lomo was 6.5 and weighed about 265 pounds and was as fast as a runaway freight train. Man, what an athlete and this from a South African. He didn't bother running around or bobbing and weaving, he just took the shortest route to the try line and that was run right over his opponent. Again as a South African I have to throw this in though (just to save face) and that is that Lomo never scored a try against the Springboks. They were terrified of him and just marked him that well. He didn't stand a chance, they just dogpiled him. RIP to him and James Small ( his opponent in the Rugby 1995 World Cup and bona fide hardass who took shit from nobody)) , another warrior that died too young. Go Bokke.
Just to correct your close guess on his height ... he is 6ft 8" and weighs around 122kg's (just short of 270lbs). You got his name fairly accurately with the exception of his first name. The first 'E" in Eben is pronounced like in ear "Earbin"
He's a smart player and slowed and crouched, otherwise that tackle might have got low enough to floor him. He backed his strength and he was right. Quick thinking and great timing.
Suggestion: Learn how Rugby is organized in Forwards and Backs. Learn what the numbers mean. What's a Scrum Half, a Fly Half, etc. We don't have separate teams for offense and defense like AF.
I love NFL as well as Rugby Union. Gronk is a fantastic player, and he always creates exciting plays when the play caller gives him an opportunity. I do wonder how he would do for two non-stop 40 minute halves as opposed to the very deliberate pace of NFL. The ability of these big men to keep running for 40 minutes straight while taking the ball to contact, scrummaging, jumping at lineouts and making big tackles is part of what makes them exceptional. Etzebeth runs 40 yards in in 4.22 seconds, is 6'8" tall and weighs 269lb. Gronk runs 40 yd in 4.6 sec, is 6'6" 265lb. I'd say Gronk is a nicer, slower, lighter, shorter Etzebeth.
Best part is..I've met this guy..he's huge..he's powerful and strong but humble as you won't believe. He signed my son's T-shirt. You Americans need rugby players to show your footballers what tough means
Dislocated shoulders and broken collar bones are common. A suggestion try Jonah LOMU reaction too Great vid 💯 Etzebeth is one of our best from Cape Town Stormers rugby franchise
The thing about Etzebeth is that if you look at other Lock forwards or even loose forwards his height and weight, his speed, powerful build and centre of gravity sets him apart. Many Locks are all about the height for lineouts but aren't balanced in every variable like he is. South Africa has been blessed with great Lock forwards over the years that stood out, like Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield for example. And not to disparage in any way those two who were great players, but Etzebeth just seems more complete in terms of physical make-up. Your NFL tight-end comment early on is actually a very good link: Etzebeth would be an ideal TE and probably flourish there rather than anywhere else in the offense or defense.
yes like that time he put hands on the England scrumhalf and ended up at the bottom of the England pack outside the touchline. The rest of the game he was meek and mild
American football mild compared to our rugby. All that padding & protection! Rugby football ( it was originally called) was created by William Webb Ellis who picked up the ball and ran with it in his arms during a football game at Rugby School in England in 1823. It hasn’t changed much since then. Rugby League is great to watch!
Eben Etzebeth has impressive body strength and stands at a height of 6 feet 8 inches tall (203 cm). In addition to this, the 28-year-old rugby star's weight is 123 Kg (271 lbs). Bokke!! 💪🏉🇿🇦👍
4:48 The reason why this is a big deal is that Eben knocked Bizmark off him. Bizmark at the time was known for being one of the strongest players on the plant and he shoved him off like a school boy!
I met him few years ago seeing we from the same town. Now im 1.96 meters tall and yet he can see easily over my head when im stand infront of him. And he is just mussle!!
Eben is just short of 7 foot. i have stood next to him, hell of a great guy, not a person to meet on the field though, very protective of his team mates.
Great player lives down the road from me. He will fit well in the All blacks squad. I'm a springboks supporter but my favourite team are the All blacks. They all play like Eben.
That is a bit rich. Loved Dan Carter and the late Jono Lumo but honestly Ritchy McCaw was more off side than he was ever onside. I think referring to him became a waste of time. He was as much a professional foul as trolls are to u-tube.
Maybe you want to look up older players like Jonah Lomu, another big guy, hes long dead now, but he was untackleable, and Richie McCaw who from canterbury nz, could be beaten up but still play with broken fingers, nose and multiple injuries over his career aswell. Not a small guy either.
Hello, I came across your channel by chance watching tributes to Eben Etzebeth (South African rugbier), I was surprised by the map found in this video. Could you tell me what it is about? I don't want to think badly, but my first thought was, that is the perception of the world that North Americans have (not Americans), then I thought it was an old map, but it left me wondering if it is really the perception of the world that they have and How far from reality they are. @@marcelohendrix6139 Racist? Why? Just because he's a white guy against colored's? Charges were laid against him and he was found not guilty in the criminal court as the people were asulting him and he defended himself.
@@marcelohendrix6139 he can fight
Your pronunciation of his name is good...really good. Eben stands at 6'8 or 6'9 and is a real power house.
Brodie Retallick is definitely a beast and dominator of making those extra yards.
Brodie retallick se poes
He's an absolute beast, but humble off the pitch.
Yep shout-out to you from Newcastle South Africa 🇿🇦. I played rugby In University myself.
When the ball is 'thrown in" that's called a line out, and is only done when the ball has gone out 'in to touch'. Welcome to the great game
McJibbin
Good on you bro
Keep doing this
I would suggest Jonah Lomu Lord Of The Wings. He is a Rugby GOAT
I'll second this. The Lord of Wings is a true LEGEND!
6 ft 5 270 and 100m in cant remember if it was 10.6 or 10.8 seconds, also smashed nearly all the athletic records at high school. Even more interesting is he played his rugby career suffering from a crippling kidney disorder. A lomu at 60% was better than majority at 100%. Him and his agent never signed a single paper.
@@stepdify He clocked 10.70 seconds over a 100 meter sprint. He was an amazing winger.
RIP legend…
Eben is probably not the most feared rugby player in the world, but he could well be the Springboks most feared player, he does have a history though and best to walk away from him in a crowded bar!!
In South Africa we have some big strong and mobile lads, which is why our guys are so sought after by the European Clubs. Springboks aside, another powerful fast runner was Jonah Lomu who played on the wing for the All Blacks. Most amazing was that at 1.95 meters and 118kg this guy was at full speed within a few yards. Not someone you wanted to tackle head on.
And some short mobile fellas who are equally as good :)
@@Randomoter James Small managed to contain him, Lomu however was definitely the first rugby superstar
You need to do "Bakkies Botha"
Your correct he is like Gronkowski 💯 What you should know is the number 2 he bumped off in the clip is also as strong as an bison.
Made Bismarck hug bare air with that bounce and he was pretty much a rookie then also. Absolute Unit that lad.
Rugby League is brutal and wonderful to watch.
You nailed the name! Its exactly how we pronounce it in SA
Yes, shoulder injuries happen alot in rugby, dislocated shoulders seen often
that's the reason I had to stop playing rugby for uni :(((
I met Eben a few years ago, and he's huge.
4:41 that knocking off one of South Africa's biggest tacklers
Eben is absolute gentle giant off the field. Looks deceive as he so far in his career was hardly ever sanctioned for violence on field. BUT rub him up wrong he will take you on by just staring you down and that is a frightening sight down Look for a game in 2022 against Australia (2nd test) and you will see what I mean
Pure joy watching that ,thanks bud
Go Bokke.
And that was 25 years ago, could you imagine him today with a proper nutrition plan and all sports science that these guys have.
@@poobum1966
Did the legend a solid and got his name spot on👌 Let's go Bokke!
You said he's name spot on buddy
Yes you pronounced his surname correct. It is rumoured the All Blacks or Australians like to mock him in scrum calling him Elizabeth!
Look at todays game against Ausies. There you will get a long clip of a big brawl of our Eben E at his best. Fortunately no fatalities.
Best part is..I've met this guy..he's huge..he's powerful and strong but humble as you won't believe. He signed my son's T-shirt. You Americans need rugby players to show your footballers what tough means
Dislocated shoulders and broken collar bones are common.
A suggestion try Jonah LOMU reaction too
Great vid 💯
Etzebeth is one of our best from Cape Town Stormers rugby franchise
His my hero. Eben you make Sa proud!!
I have met Eben at Rugby lunch at the Villagers Rugby lunch. The TV does not do the size of the man Justis.
Im 6ft and when I pass him at the local bar he towers over me. And you nailed the surname by the way
Jonah of course is the goat. Brian Lima was one of the hardest tacklers in the modern game
AKA the Chiropracter. Because he rearranged bones.
First time watching you .mum south African lol..and understand the basics of the NFL haha love sports and and learning about them.
Recently started watching your channel, love it!
Thanks Richard 👋😄🙏
He's a massive 6'9
It really helps a lot when you know rugby rules and know the guys he goes against. He goes for the biggest guys and puts them down.
Agree, he always announces his presence by taking the biggest opponent down early.... 👍🏻
yes like that time he put hands on the England scrumhalf and ended up at the bottom of the England pack outside the touchline. The rest of the game he was meek and mild
He's never afraid though.
you gotta react to christian cullen, probably the best running back player of all time
My too, favourite player of all time!
Until he ran into corne krige
Eben is the current most feared, but back in my day there was a beast that would bump eben dead. Its beast mtawarira. But the both are poes big.
To know how good the South Africans are. You said you were impressed by Jonah Lomu. But he never scored a try against South Africa ever
Bokke!! 💪🏉🇿🇦👍
NFL without all the padding vs rugby chaps...have a go boys?
Eben is 6'9". Gronk looks like a dwarf next to him.
The thing is if you new how good the players are he is doing it to, you would appreciate it even more.
I am a South African and yes, you don't mess with this dude.
He is the modern Bakkies Botha. Strength, size, temperament and all
Yeah people are hesitant. It hurts to tackle someone like Eben.
He's not like this guy or like that guy he's Eben Etzebeth his own legend
You said his name almost perfectly.
6'8 270lb; 5.11s 40meter/43yard --> BEAST
4:48 The reason why this is a big deal is that Eben knocked Bizmark off him. Bizmark at the time was known for being one of the strongest players on the plant and he shoved him off like a school boy!
You nailed the surname, and almost the name, the Eben is pronounced eaben, like *ear without the "R"
If you want to put things in perspective, go see what Bismarck Du Plessis does on the field. That's the guy Eben sat on his backside.
"ea(r) -bin et-sir-bet" that is the correct pronunciation.
Hesitant is understandable when he's 6'8" and 118Kg's with the temperament of a charging buffalo.
Go check out Bakkies Botha...not playing anymore....but same scenario
Wait till you see Bakkies Botha, that guy was a beast.
Length: 6.8
Proudly 🇿🇦
I met him few years ago seeing we from the same town. Now im 1.96 meters tall and yet he can see easily over my head when im stand infront of him. And he is just mussle!!
You should really watch RG Snyman. He's even bigger than Etzebeth, just as fiery in his demeanour and has a ton of skill.
You should watch some of Bakkies Botha's games. He was a true enforcer. Eben is great player but Bakkies enjoyed hurting the opposition
I would love to be wrong, just tell me. Regards, Gonzalo from Argentina
Etzebeth is 6'7" weighs 20+ stone.
I like the rob gronkowski comparison
