I have learned something new. It's like watching Bill Nye the Science Guy, but without the push for atheism.

Chuck: The original name used by the Hebrews was Elohim; itself derived from El which was one of the first known Jewish ancestral gods. Not many realize that early Hebrews were a polythistic society. Only later on were monotheistic beliefs adopted after significant conflict and war which is where Yahweh comes out of.
Christians tend to identify their particular god with this Jewish god as do Muslims. Yet it's' not clear that this "god" of the old testament IS a single god or a composite of several earlier gods. Nor is it clear that the god of Abraham is the same god people later on associated with Jesus. The characters do seem extraordinarily different between the wrathful and violent Abrahamic god and the passive New Testament god. It's as if they were two different gods.
Of course as an atheist I don't believe any of these "gods" are anything but human constructs but it does make for an interesting study in mythology and ancient beliefs.
