- Oil change procedure / needed supplies, to change the oil on a Harbor Freight 7000/8750 watt generator
SUPPLIES:
1.16 QUART OF OIL
12MM WRENCH OR SOCKET
FUNNEL WITH TUBE ATTACHED TO AID IN OIL RE-FILL
I RECOMMEND RUNNING YOUR ENGINE TO WARM IT UP, PRIOR TO CHANGING YOUR OIL.
REMEMBER: RIGHTY-TIGHTY, LEFTY-LOOSEY, OR COUNTER CLOCK-WISE TO LOOSEN, CLOCKWISE TO TIGHTEN (ON RIGHT HANDED THREADS).
*Great **Generater.Systems** . Our 1st 2500W Champion backed us up with hurricane Ida last August when our whole home generator crapped out after 8 days. Love the dual fuel. Hope to never run gasoline in it.Bought this 2500W to parallel with our other one for the RV.*
I use rec fuel. Don't need to stabilize. It kills the cheap Chinese carbs. Also use oil with zinc additive because they use different casting for internal parts. Love this generator. I use it for camping and running house of we lose power.
Have mine converted to run on natural gas. Use it for a whole house generator. Just used it for 3 days straight no problems...
Thanks Robert Duvall !!
If you loosen the orange fill plug the oil will come out much quicker.
I didn’t notice that you ever said what weight of oil you were using, or what weight of oil the manufacturer recommends. I bought my 8750 W harbor freight generator used without the manual, so I can’t resort to that.
👍
I just got one of these units, and I see this post is over 6 years old. How's that thing holding up? You use it often? Is the claimed 12-hour run-time accurate? I want to build an enclosure around mine and so I won't easily be able to tip it as you showed. I plan on using one of those hand-operated suction pumps to get out the last of the oil, and I'd also like to use a magnetic plug but can't find one; I hoped you might know of some place. Thanks very much in advance if you reply.
I get around 8 to 10 hours on mine before I need to refuel. It all depends on how much load it's carrying as far as how long it can run. I power my entire house with this thing and I have central heat and air, 3 freezers and a large hot water heater. Although, I also use common sense and don't do laundry, cook (use the oven) or anything else that can wait until power is restored either in efforts to keep the total load down and not strain the machine. Just used it last night due to a power outage caused by this last tropical storm we had. It's been a great generator and has definitely paid for itself. I've had it for around 5 or 6 years with zero problems.
I've misplaced the manual and couldn't remember how much or what type of oil to use in it, hence why I'm here. Hope this helps.
@@Bluelightbandit Thanks for the reply. I bought 2 of these things in hope of using one and selling the other for double my cost after the earthquake (I live in southern Cal and we're several years overdue). I've asked about a dozen people but it seems EVERYBODY already has one. LOL when I ask them the brand (don't know) and size (a pretty big one). Next time I'll ask what color it is. Lies such as that is why I have no qualms whatsoever for a little "profiteering".
⚠️Please don’t forget to follow all generator safety instructions whenever you use your portable generator. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully. This is a reminder.
1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules.
4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.

@@The_Happy_Aviation_Enthusiast I've owned several. How many people did you do your cut and paste for? Please reply safely.
@@The_DC_Kid probably a lot of people I remind about the safety rules.
The manual calls for SAE oil. Specially for first oil fill and break in I wouldn't use Synthetic oil.
Synthetic oil meets SAE spec
Looking for the oil capacity. Thanks for this video!

Given Mine leaked oil out of the box, would you reccomened adding high mileage and putting off an oil change as long as possible.
From what metal I saw in the oil at the time I changed the oil in my generator, I would just top off the oil level and change it at the recommended time.

How often do you change the oil?
Aprox 20h of use is what the Manuel says
I think it's the first 20 hours of run time, and then change the oil every 100 hours after that.
I hope you stay safe everyone ruclips.net/video/I1jT3ANENvI/видео.html watch this safety video

Thank you for the video. I just picked up the same generator for my home this year. I already filled it with full synthetic, but I'm a tall guy and missed the drain plug and was wondering where it was. Couple of questions for you.
1)Do you know if there is a filter that will need to be changed?
2) Have you made the switch to the tri fuel setup, and if so how is it working for you?

Any updates? How's the generator running? Ever install the tri fuel kit?
Question how good has that generator been to you? Have you ever used it by any chance for supplying power to a 220 welder thank you
Jaime,
The Generator has been good for me. I purchased it after I had lost power for 4 days due to bad snow storm. I have only used it for maintenance runs since that time. It has always cranked with no issues.I use the battery out of one of my 250 ninja motorcycles, which works well to crank it. I always shut off the fuel and let the carb run dry when I run it on gasoline. ( I also use star tron fuel treatment in the gas) I only have a 120 volt wire welder, that I have not used with this generator, so I am no help with that one.
Great .... Thanks for answering..... My question.....
Mine powers my 220 central air no problem, so you should be alright
I've run a 220v flux core welder with it. It's not smooth and the weld is ugly, but it did the job that I need it to do.
Thanks for sharing.
By the was what viscosity oil did you use?
Volusia, I believe it was 10-30W.
+12twelvestrings it depends on season.
usually 20-50 is used in summer and 10-30 in winter almost.
The owners manual tells you what weight to use
Everyone really needs to watch this video about generator safety ruclips.net/video/I1jT3ANENvI/видео.html a lot of people died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Thank you

Thanks! Super simple task but manual wasn't helpful and it's comforting seeing a walkthrough instead of guessing.
Aaron Wilson your welcome, thanks for the comment
Didnt change the oil filter?
Tyler Winkle there isn’t an oil filter to replace, as most smaller engines don’t.
Thanks for the Lesson !

Hello 12, I have the same generator and I piped it out with a 12mm to 1/4 npt and made it about 12" with an elbow and a ball valve, you can run it straight out or two the side, so all you have to do is run it for a few to get the oil hot and open the valve and fill an old container, Also I heard you say you were getting the Tri-fuel from US Carb they have have a new unit called the Snorkle very easy install and you don't have to cut the frame, same price as the old model. I can send you a picture if you like just need an e-mail address
Thanks Al for the piped drain idea. How about a short video to show the US Carb Snorkle kit installed on your Predator? Hopefully the weather is not that bad this year and I won't have to crank it up except for the maintenance runs I do periodically. BTW where did you locate the 12mm to 1/4" NPT fitting? take care~12
thank you for the posting!
