This was sooo cool!! I love making my own fabric. I have never done true block printing, but I do using the Gel Press with stamps and I get a similar effect. The background for my Bucket list Quilt that I'll have in the 2021 SOQS was made by me as I printed all of the 5" squares. Thank you for sharing this inspirational video. I'm going to have to try that Speedball fabric ink.
i am very thankfull to you , you really help me , dear i want you to make a video which shows all details of block printing , i love the way you teach ,TQ
Wonderful class! I have most of the supplies to start block printing except the carving tools. Can’t wait to start creating when I get those soon! Love all your videos! My one question was how many times can you print with that block until you need to wash it off.
Val's on vacation right now, and I'm not sure how many times she would recommend. When I'm printing I wash my block off when I notice any ink bleeding into the craved places or my lines don't look as crisp. Hope that helps.
i love the way you teach, can you tell me which name colors are best for handblock printing is best and if the colors getting dry what shell i add to make it right . TQ
I really like Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink and I use the transparent extender by Speedball to keep my inks from drying too fast. Also clean your palette when it seems sticky and roll a new well of ink. I hope that helps. - Val
hi just want to ask,if you apply lighter colour of fabric paint on darker fabric, does the light colour appear opaque or it need to have a white base before applying the colour?
Hello Valori I have a question about the use of Speedball fabric printing ink that you use. I have wooden printing blocks and wanted to try these out on fabric. My question is I bought 4 tubes, three oil based and one water soluble. Is it okay to (1) mix these two for making another color and (2) if I use them separately, can I use both these on one piece of fabric. Will the printed fabric then need to be treated the same concerning drying time. How do I fix the 2 different colors : oil based and water soluble on the same fabric. Thank you
It is not a good idea to use the oil based inks on fabric, they don’t dry well and are made for paper. The oil from the ink can also bleed out and stain the fabric. Speedball Fabric Block Printing Inks are the best for fabric. Other water soluble inks for block printing can wash out. It is important to use the right type of ink for the most success.
I really like Speedball Speedy Carve, it is a pink rubbery type of block. I also use Gomuban which is a Japanese dense rubbery type of block that is harder to carve than the pink product but holds great detail. I don't use wood anymore, I don't have a press and it is really hard to use. I don't care for using Lino because it is hard to carve and hard to print in my opinion. Hope this helps. - Val
Thank you for the video! As I’m printing repeat patterns the ink tends to build/dry up on my blocks and brayer. And that changes how it prints(almost like powdery texture) Am I doing something wrong? Should I clean my plate more often as I print?
It could be the type of ink you're using or you might need to add a little transparent extender to your ink. This will keep the ink wet longer. I do clean my palette often if it seems sticky. I hope that helps. - Val
Hi So sorry for the delay in getting back to you. It is called Gomuban - the only place in the US I have been able to find it is McClain's Printmaking Supply. - Val

Do you sell the Japanese vinyl carving blocks at the Stitchin' Post?
Sorry no. We sell speedy carve (the pink stuff).
hi just want to ask,if you apply lighter colour of fabric paint on darker fabric, does the light colour appear opaque or it need to have a white base before applying the colour?
It depends on your ink. Val used the opaque Speedball fabric inks and they provide good coverage.
Thanx for sharing . What kind of transfer paper can I use on Gomuban Relief Printing Plates?
Sorry I'm not familiar with those printing plates.

Yes, clean off the ink and start fresh when it begins to dry out.
