becoming more minimal is 1000% easier than trying to maintain a cluttered, stuffed, stressful home while pretending everything is okay. These points are spot on

I have absolutely hit my breaking point mentally in my house! I don't know how far I'll go with minimalism, but it has felt so good to fill up donation bags. For the first time in years I'm starting on top of my kitchen and living room and the stress is going away little by little. Having to be out of the house at a certain time in the morning this week and knowing where all shoes were meant that I left on time. That doesn't usually happen. I have a very long way to go but I can already feel the difference in my mood and stress just with the very little I have done. I can't believe the difference! I have been binge watching anything that involves realistic decluttering with kids. Thank you for the content!

I agree with all of these. I have to say that I don't miss a lot of pictures on the wall and knick knacks I use to have. I keep that pretty minimal. Less dusting too! I find that having too much stuff in a room is not relaxing and ups my anxiety. It's hard sometimes going to certain people's homes. I always feel relieved when I get back to my home. Shannon, your hair looks so pretty! 😍 And by the way, I love all of your plants. ❤

I find that too, when going to other people's homes, the more clutter, the more stressful I feel. Since decluttering, I don't miss anything!

Thank you! We stayed at a rental on vacation and there was so much decor that we literally had no where to put our things. It really stood out to me that we are minimal compared to how most people decorate.

This was such a helpful video! I’m trying to start this journey but have felt guilty about wanting to keep some of the items that I love. Like makeup, I have more makeup than most people would need, but it is a creative outlet for me and that’s ok. It’s nice to see other people agree that it looks so different for each person. I don’t want to “change” my home. I just want it to be a better version of out home!

I’m working away at decreasing the amount of stuff in the house. The guest room is now basically empty except for the bed, bedding and side dressers. I could still have guests. It is soooooo easy to maintain. 😊 Now onto my office / sewing room. 🎉

as to the starkness of minimalist homes: I started to get rid of things because I felt overwhelmed by my stuff - thst includes decor. Being in a visually busy room stresses me out. I have a very stressfull job and I found that I need bare walls in my home to get rid of overstimulation. I still have some decor and a few pictures but A LOT less than before. I find that my study/office which holds all my books and teaching materials is also the room which I least like to be in.

I feel the same about decor. I am decluttering decor that I’m not in love with. Less things on tables means less work for me and also less stress. I have art on my walls but I try to keep it to a minimal. I understand that rooms can be overstimulating. I never thought of it that way but that’s exactly how I feel. It’s what give me anxiety. My office/junk room is where I spend the least time as well. It’s become a storage area for things I need to hide until I know what to do with.😩

Super random, but could you show your minimalist baby gear? I've seen a bit of stuff here and there thru your nursery tour & stuff around the house, but I'd love to see it all together. I'm expecting another in a few more months. I was NOT minimal with my first kid, and it's been 4 years. I've been going thru all the baby stuff I kept & trying to decide what else I can get rid of.

I am not sure if the first one is a mistake, more like a thing of personal choice. Over the years I've created an absolute white home with just some plain wood and light grey notes. I LOVE the airy feeling it gives me and everything over this is too much for me. I get overwhelmed when there is colour at home

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  2 года назад +2

Hi Lora, this is what a lot of sites said could be a mistake, but I agree you have to do what you like and if a white clear home makes you happy then that is awesome =)

Good video Shannon! I found minimalism to help me keep my houses so much easier to maintain. I started decluttering in June 2019 and remember talking to my sister who had been a minimalist before it was considered by that name telling her my fabric was not an area I would consider downsizing. She told me if it was something I loved and used by all means keep..but I have passed on to friends fabric I find I haven’t used! Each person has to find what works for them!

  • @jadejade5303

I like plain white paint because it's easier to touch up if there is a mark on the wall. Almost every stores have the same white also they never discontinued the color. Yea yea i know some store they would mix the color for you if you ask them.. but it's depends on where you live. Minimalism is a lifestyle ...so its not all identical. Everyone have they own way and whatever make them feel comfortable. I dont disagree on anyone because they all practice differently and i respect that.

It always makes me sad the negative thoughts that are out there on living a minimal life because they feel there are certain rules you have and you are not a true minimalist if you have a little extra...I love how you presented this that that is so not truth! Agree with you. I do seem to look at homes with only white or gray and black are considered the minimalist colors.
I just moved from a 1940’s colonial home to a new built. I missed my previous home. Now they have the open concept which I don’t have walls to put all my pictures. The walls are white. The paint they use is chalky. You barely touch it and it shows. Can’t wash it or the whole paint comes off.
When I watch older shows their house was smaller but more useful. ( contained) and practical.
Garages were used for cars. :)
I have been decluttering before the move. Afterwards was overwhelmed and put into 3 storage sheds just to put house for sale. Now. Time to go through the storage sheds. Could use your help. :)
I know your busy. Love your house and changes builtins, garden. Transforming the sliding door. Beautiful home, Beautiful family.
    Blessings

I heard a minimalist comment that she was thrilled that her bedroom felt like a hotel room, and she was thrilled. I'm glad she's happy, but the comment turned me off. Hotel rooms are not exactly warm nor welcoming, in my view. They are kept rather bland so that no one finds them objectionable.
